i completely agree with the review.
i was very disappointed that the game wasn't really survival horror(at least in my definition of the term) -

hi!
i just realized i left a typo in that quoted text: it was supposed to be "i was hella glad that the game didn't take a resident evil direction with the combat." i don't know how that got by me the first time, sorry. it won't let me fix it now either. -

SPOILERS
i've never really seen hostel, but i can see what you're talking about. how lame is it that curtis didn't actually harm elle with that circular saw? he spent waaay too long just scaring her that it stopped feeling like she was in immediate danger. it kind of made my rescue of her seem not that important. i mean, at least have her lose a couple fingers or just skim her arm with it or something. i'm not for torture scenes but if you're going to have one you should make them more convincing.
dead space is pretty fun though i actually think the plot is a bit more cliche than silent hill: homecoming, but it's nowhere near as ridiculous as re4, it kind of seems like a crossbreed between re4 and doom 3. dead space is easier for me than shh, but i still prefer silent hill because, despite my grievances, i'm pretty biased towards the series.
as for pyramid head, i read something that his look was manifested from james' knowledge of silent hill folklore or something, so i've kind of gone with that. i'm not sure how genuine that piece of info is though. -

SPOILER alert
i still feel really weird about pyramid head's inclusion. that's james' demon, reusing him just seems lazy and pointless. at least origins came up with their own variation on pyramid head.
some of the plot points bothered me. the whole police station section felt like a cheesy american horror film. but there was a few things i didn't predict. i figured that alex's brother was dead, and i never anticipate multiple plot twists so i wasn't really paying much attention to anything else.
i do respect the game for feeling like a real survival horror game though, it's one of the last, so many games are now being called survival horror that i'm just getting cynical(going on a tangent). i just got dead space and that's too much like resident evil 4. it's a good game it just pisses me off that it's put in that genre. but then again maybe i have my own definition of survival horror.
