To give my share of critical feedback, I think that the original scaryness of 5DAS and 7DAS was lost already at TN, but there was the whole shifting thing and that kind of stuff. But 6DAS just didn't have the edge, as you didn't really get to know any of the cast and couldn't -truly- emphatize their situation. It's mostly because the whole world had become too distant in 6DAS. You knew what you were facing, you knew what to be scared about, you knew to wait for bad dreams every time you go to sleep. I wouldn't like calling the plot any mystery. Yes, of course there are unanswered questions, but it's no complete mystery.

Maybe also one thing that 6DAS lacked was a real villain. DeFoe had become distant, kinda nonexistant in the plot, and besides, he was no longer any powerful enemy, as you knew that he was just a tiny henchman. There was no new enemy, like in TN there was the Tall Man. Back then, he was scary. He was a little bit of that too in 6DAS, but not so much. Okay, we get Chzo as being more centered on the plot, but let's look at what Chzo is: He's a pain god. Want to fight him? I wouldn't! You never knew what DeFoe was while he was still scary, so you couldn't know can you defeat him or not. You knew what Cabbie was, but you didn't know he was a lich. Right when Chzo started becoming a real threat, you knew he's a bloody god!

Anyways, I do personally hope that Yathz starts from a clean table and creates something new and mystic. It can't involve Trilbs, as that would take mystery away as we would know already what becomes of him in the future.

Ahem, as a desperate matter to make teh discussion slightly more serious again. (was it ever serious in the first place...)

The question that is on top of my mind now is, that what IS the hole the Caretaker hops into? Reading the descriptions, it sure is deep and black and all. Where does it lead? Certainly you don't die if you jump there. Maybe it's a ticket out of existance in a way. You kinda leave your material form. (= Sommie) So... Did Chzo really banish Cabbie forever? Was it oblivion for Cab, or perhaps he gained some more powers?

I may have said this, but think Cabadath was completely mortal all the time. His life was simply extended a helluva lot. Did anyone ACTUALLY try to kill Cab at any point? Yes, Frehorn shot at him, but... That wasn't Cabbie.

What if Chzo needed Cabadath to become more like the Caretaker? Maybe even replace Somerset?

Just a random thought, maybe chzo wasn't just trying to make a new prince, but was trying to protect itself from that new prince. Remember, john defoe was afraid of trilby. Maybe it kept that old trilby (the one that ends up being killed) around so as to protect itself. If defoe was afraid of trilby, maybe the new prince was too.

And so chzo could keep trilby around so that if the new prince ever turned on chzo he would be kept at bay by the trilby.

A fair point indeed. If we back up the theory of the New Prince being Theo/DeFoe, or DeFoe otherwise messing up the New Prince's mind, the Newbie would be too afraid to plot agains Chzo, because he had Trilby. Then again, I'd be more afraid of a huge Pain-Eye than some old guy hanging from a... Err... Wall.

Besides, as Trilby became that one greatest pain DeFoe knew, maybe Theo's mind got so messed up, that he created one such too. Maybe it was Trilby too, maybe it was Chzo. That doesn't really matter. But I think I'll back up this one, that the Newbie Prince is afraid of something Chzo has.

//By the way, I just thought of one thing. If Yahtz is going to rant on with this serie, the last part could actually be one where Chzo would be destroyed. By NP or Trilby or whoever. Chzo's not immortal or anything. Yes, maybe he enjoys pain, but that doesn't change the fact that he can be destroyed. If Chzo was able to consume (= Destroy) all other pain elementals, then he can be destroyed too. Just a thought, and I wouldn't probably enjoy such a game, but we'll see.

I thought it's because his mind was sort of junctioned to DeFoe's, who saw his father (his tormentor) in every person. For Malcolm, it was DeFoe who had ruined his life thus he sees him in everything that he considers evil. I think their fears are combined somehow, but perhaps I'm totally wrong here. Perhaps he's just ridden with guilt.

Or maybe it the whole ship was run by a crew of DeFoe-lookalikes and Somerset was the true killer! Rawr!

Okay, thinking about it seriously, I believe it is just Somerset's mind going crazy. (Agony of the Mind, anyone?) Think of it, Somerset never actually killed any of the members of the ship, but got accused. He got sent to a mental hospital and everyone started talking of him in a way, that he killed everyone on that ship. Wouldn't that make you a bit crazy too? The human mind is quite remarkable. After all that time (how long was he there?) in the asylum, maybe his mind started giving out false memories and he started remembering that he was indeed the one who murdered all those people. Then again, deep in his mind he knows it was DeFoe and therefore kills a bunch of DeFoes in his mind all the time.

I really didn't think of it earlier, but the Caretaker went through the Agonies too, didn't he? For the purpose of...?

I'm getting a bit tired of this ranting around, but this is interesting nevertheless. I just hope Yahtzee doesn't interupt and tell us that it was all just a coincidence and Chzo was just a tourist checking out ancient Britain and got messed in all this. Maybe the Tall Man tripper over all those people he killed by accident. Or maybe this all was just part of a big reality show, that Simone had orchestrated, like good ol' Treasure Hunter implied.

I thought the random "it hurts" wich weren't IN a visual hallucination was just a bug.

One thing I didn't quite understand was why Malcolm Somerset relived all the murders on the Mephistopheles as though he had done them himself, with everyone else in the room (including the version of himself that was actually there) replaced with John DeFoe apron+mask+machete instances. It was an incredibly awesome game sequence from a cinematic point of view, with his robe becoming torn and bloodied as he descends the stairs, gradually transforming him into what we recognise as the mysterious Caretaker, but plotwise I don't really know why those particular flashbacks happened or what they signified.

    Anybody care to enlighten me?

I would've actually liked it, if the player wasn't given any control while descending down. This would've actually made it a lot more cinematic and you could focus on watching this scene, wich in my opinion, was one of the best and most important scenes in the game. I personally had a little trouble first actually getting down the stairs, so it would've been nice if you wouldn't have had to do that at all. Just watch.

A general question: When did you recognize Somerset as being the Caretaker? Was it before the whole scene? Was it after the first/second/third/fourth flashback? Inside Chzo? After the scene?

I personally started suspecting this right after the first flashback, but thought it wouldn't really be true. (partially because I didn't spot his loss of hair at that point yet.)
