  1. gothic subculture 101

    Posted 29 Nov 2007

It seems that the gothic subculture that seems to be ever so permeated into american society is becoming increasingly more ambient.

I myself am not "goth", I never was, dont intend to be,.but on the same token, im not necessarily bashing it either.

I am, however, finding myself ever the more curious about why it has gained momentum in popularity.

Ill be honest, Im not even sure if I know what constitutues "goth". I do know that I went to high school with kids who wore Doc Marten shoes, wore metal chains that were attached to the wallet, wore dog collars around their necks, had hair dyed black and streaked with loud colors like lime green or hot pink,.wore black lipstick,.eyeliner,.and had more piercings in the face than my brother has hooks in his fishing tackle box.

This goth look,.this image,.lifestyle..is embraced by both guys and girls alike. I dont quit understand it.

First off,.I dont know what bands are goth, and which arent. Is death metal a sort of branch of goth? Nu metal? is there a such thing as a goth music genre? when i go to sam goody to buy cds,.i dont recall seeing any section in the store specifically labeled as "Goth".

then theres that whole death metal scene..where every lead singer of every band sounds like darth vader with laryngitis.

I did some research to try to ascertain what the founding roots of goth were..and believe it or not..it lists "The Doors",..yes,.Jim Morrison would turn in his grave if he knew.

The music is one thing,..but then the clothes..and makeup? what causes someone to want to dress this way? did they come from an abusive childhood? do they have low self-esteem?

I know that from being a girl and all,.that theres a lot of pressure on us girls to always be as pretty as possible,.and im guessing that if a girl finds herself short of these goals..she turns to this goth lifestyle as a sort of outlet from it. a way for her to find others that share common interests...bonding,.if you will

...and im sure the same holds true for guys as well.

i havent even touched upon "emo"...is that a form of goth too? what got the whole emo thing started?

dammit..why cant everyone just look and dress normal? why? why?..why do people insisnt on dressing up like every damn day is halloween?

i know some people who listen to Insane Clown Posse...now, i dont necessarily think of goth when i think of this band, but rather a bunch of wild white boys that don cosmetics and rap. but, surprisingly, this band is heavily embraced by the goth subculture. their fans are called "Juggalos",.and "juggalettes". ,.and some of the content of their lyrics are quite disturbing as they recite lyrics that pursuade engaging in taboo things such as hedonism, nihilism, etc.

..and whats so big about drinking faygo anyways...its not even alcoholic.

and then theres the whole vampire thing..people think that they are vampires. its really dumb. i guess thats a goth thing too,i dont know.

i look at this whole dilemma the same way i look at white people who try to act black and hang out with blacks, and talk ebonics, etc. ,..its like they found themselves unable to fit in with other whites,.so they went with the black crowd.

and dont take this like im being racial or anything, cause im not. just using this as an analogy.

but the point im trying to convey is that, its like some people find themselves so depressed about many a thing in life...trying to fit in,.try to be the best they can be..and when they fall short of such goals,.they tend to become delinquent and mischievous..i assume?
  2. food for thought

    Posted 26 Oct 2007

Some of you have been to a high school reunion, some of you have not. I have as of about 3 years ago.

A girl I went to school with, who I wasnt particularly close to volunteered herself to be the administrator of our high school alumni's class myspace page for the year we graduated in.

although there was a little over 100 students in attendance during my senior year,.not everyone is on the myspace alumni page. some alumni havent been able to be contacted,.and some alumni that know about the myspace page, prefer to be rebels and not join it.

i myself am on the alumni page, along with about 40 others who wish to remain in contact. but even with my dearest intentions of wanting to remain in contact with those i attended school with,.it still doesnt override the inevitable:

it seems that the way things were in high school, is still the way things pretty much are now that high school is over. the people you knew in hung out with in high school are really the only ones that would have any interest in maintaining contact with you.

it seems like that, you would have a slim chance of trying to establish a solid relationship with an alumni that you didnt have any classes with..even if you just wanted to say "hey, i know we didnt have any classes together or anything,..but ive always wanted to get to know you better..even back in the day"

when i attended my 10 yr class reunion, i was met with some surprises..it was interesting to see where certain alumni were in their lives,..some had a few kids,.some had a lot...most were either married or had a significant other.

but one thing remained inevitable..the high school reunion wasnt in place to reunite alumni back together...no...instead,.what it ended up doing was bringing old cliques back together....the jocks,.the stoners, the nerds,.the preps,...blacks,.asians,.. latinos..everyone got back together in their little groups...it seemed like you stood little chance of trying to get to know someone now that you wanted to know back then.

a high school reunion has a sort of uncomfortable feel...well,.similiar to that of when high school was in session. when we were in high school it was a total fashion show..who was wearing what designer label, etc....the high school reunion was the same..but worse...now its like,..what are you wearing..what have you done with your life,.you did you marry...if you have no kids=youre a loser..if you have one kid=why didnt you have more?,.if you have too many kids=youre viewed as ghetto or a sex freak.

what kind of car do you drive and who is sporting the best set of wheels?

anyways,.getting back to the myspace page issue and the administrator..well,.she recently sent emails to everyone thats on the myspace alumni page asking for us to send back updated information with our street addresses, email addys, phone numbers, our spouses names, kids names, etc.

...im thinking to myself...if i am already added onto this myspace alumni page..dont you already have a way of getting in touch with me? besides..the alumni that are my friends already know that personal stuff about me anyways..and the ones who dont know it are choosing not to be friends with me for one reason or another.

i felt like the focus should be shifted away from trying to update personal info of alumni that are already added onto the myspace page,..and rather, making attempts to try to locate other alumni that arent yet on the page so they can join. to me thats time better spent.

but why oh why does everyone insist on a "high school reunion"?...i made closer friends when i was in grade school...but no one has a grade school reunion. why not? you went to grade school for 9 years and high school for only 4 years..it seems to make more sense to definitely have a grade school reunion if a high school reunion must transpire.

cliques werent as profound in grade school as they were in high school. it seemed like, and especially in the early years of grade school, if you walked to someone and said you thought they were cool and you wanted to be their friend..that was it...you made a new friend..

in high school,.a nerd cant walk up to a jock and expect the high school quarterback to come and sit down at the nerd table in the cafeteria during lunch..that just doesnt happen....even if the nerd and jock were once good friends in kindergarten.

the american society is one of the worst when it comes to social networking,..because its so based upon stereotypes that are heavily influenced by media saturation that causes us to think the way we do.

when it all boils down,.you can blame television and schools. the combination of the two have taught youths that to be cool, you have to wear these designer jeans, wear these sneakers, have this hairdo,.listen to this band. schools are to blame for proactively creating cliques in the first place via academic categorization. i.e., your scores on grades predetermine your success in life.

now youre thinking, well, thats pretty much the way it is. there is such a heavy influence in american society to strive to be the best..get the best grades you can. do your best performance, althletically, mentally, physically, etc. excell in academics,.etc.

but why?...the core reason is that because america is a capitalist society. we want every child out there to be an einstein, a whiz kid, a genius. because america doesnt fuck around when it comes down to wall street,.we want our companies stocks to be the best to invest in.

our society, this capitalist society that we so proudly tout as being internationally supreme to all others is so ill in its conception. we believe we have the best society,.but we dont. because if we did, we wouldnt have people who are so filthy rich they have no earthly idea as to what to do with all their oodles of millions upon millions of dollars they have...while others are homeless and wonder day to day where their next meal will come from.

america's tout is "we are america...the land of opportunity..come and get it". so everyone believes this, and they all want to go to school, and get college degrees and make as much money as they possibly can. everyone wants to win the lotto, strike gold, claim a fortune...every american wants to be a millionaire.

well,.think about it..what if, every single american citizen was a millionaire? seriously. what if,.everyone strived for the gold,.reached for the stars..and succeeded??..what if that really happened?...the price of everything would go up,..the u.s. mint and dept of treasury would have to issue more currency to monetarily suffice the needs of this millionaire society..because everyone would be equivalent.

but,..since we are now talking and shifting this issue over to equality,.lets scratch the millionaire concept, and stick with something a little more basic. lets assume that america's society wasnt a capitalist one, but rather a militaristic one. , and this is not to be confused with communism or any type of socially/economically oppressed society...it would still be a free country..but it would mirror the armed forces in terms of their pay grade scale.

everyone would make the same pay, no matter what job they did..based on their rank. our health care issue would be solved, as we are basically utiliizing the military's as a blueprint..just on a much wider scale. i think it would be good, and would solve a ton of issues with our society.
  3. girl gets mcstrip-searched at work

    Posted 5 Oct 2007

I know I can be a busy person sometimes, and i usually try my best to keep up with the news on a daily basis, but i guess i was stuck in a cave back in 2004, because the huge story completely blew right past me...in fact, i never recall even hearing anything about this story at all.

maybe i did, and three years time has taken its toll

i recently heard the story that happened in april 2004 of a young girl named Louise Ogborn, who was a McDonalds employee in Mount Washington, KY, and was ordered to strip search by her supervisor, at the demands of an anonymous caller claiming to be a law enforcement official.

here are some links, for those of you that want the full story

    http://abcnews. go.co...=3688563&page=1

    http://en.wikipedia. ...Prank_Call_Scam

for the rest of you, i will try to briefly explain the scenario:

girl decided to work evening shift for extra money, a man who apparently has never even been inside of this restaurant, and is in florida, places a prank call to the mcdonalds pretending to be a law enforcement official claiming the girl stole a purse from a customer, and that the officer has the customer at his station, and orders a strip search on the girl to be performed by her boss over the telephone.

the girl is subjected to over 3 1/2 hours of sexual abuse locked away in her boss' office, her boss (who is female) has to soon attend to other work related duties, and the caller tells boss to phone her fiancee & have him watch over the girl instead. the boss does so, and soon her fiancee arrives, and the phone is passed to him. the caller continues his demands, while the fiancee still believes he is talking with a law figure. the caller orders the fiance to repeatedly spank the girl, then orders the girl to perform oral sex on the fiancee.

another employee who was on shift at mcdonalds at the time of the lewd incident dialed *69, and learns the call was made from a pay phone in florida. detectives further learn the call was made via a calling card, and that this particular calling card was bought from wal-mart., they are lucky to have video survelliance tape of the transaction of the suspect actually buying the calling card at the walmart, and the idiot was dumb enough to wear his work uniform, which clearly shows he is a correctional officer at a nearby correctional facility. detectives then easily apprehend their suspect, who is later acquitted of all charges in court.

a couple of thoughts pass my mind on this incident..............

ok..i know its been a few years since i was 18, and was in high school, or whatever,..but jeeez..even back then i had common sense. i would never allow myself to be strip searched by anyone claiming to be an lawful entity simply over the phone. that person would need to arrive in person, and if they are of the opposite sex, i would only allow the search to be performed if a same sex member was present. but even before all this happens, they will need to thoroughly explain to me their justification for doing so, and produce authentic law badges, indicating they are truly law enforcement.

i cant believe some people are that gullible, admittedly..she was probably fearful of going to jail, even though she knew she didnt do anything wrong to begin with.

i can understand, if the strip search & abuse took place in a very short amount of time...but we are talking about three and a half hours...that almost the same timeframe as watching two movies back to back...what in the hell was the girl, her boss, and the fiancee thinking?

was the boss really just too busy to really do anything about the issue? were too many people ordering burgers and fries, for her to attend to her employee and stop the obvious abuse?

what the hell was going on in the mind of the fiancee when he was recieving the oral sex, not to mention the fact his soon-to-be-spouse was the manager on duty who could pop right into the office at any given time and witness this?...obviously its not rocket science, and anyone with half a brain knows law enforcement would never order such a insane request..especially over the phone.
  4. random video game questions

    Posted 15 Sep 2007

a thread for anyone to ask anything about games. consoles, controllers, etc.

a question i have is, did the playstation 2 finally die out? i still see some of the slim ps2 models being sold on store shelves, but it seems that game releases for the ps2 have either dwindled or died out completely?

anyone know for sure about this??
  5. The Beatles

    Posted 10 Aug 2007

A lot of people like the Beatles, and why not, album for album they have sold more albums than most bands could ever dream of.

For the most part, I like the Beatles music,.its catchy, it invokes emotion, etc.

I do also believe that the Beatles popularity in the U.S. did in fact come as a matter of being in the right place at the right time. It was only months after JFK was brutally killed in Dallas that the Beatles had made their first nationally televised appearance, and caused "beatlemania".

so, in some aspects, you could say that the Beatles are overrated. its all a matter of opinion.

some of their songs are just flat out weird and eery.

I remember the first time ever I heard "Strawberry Fields Forever",.I listened to the song and thought.."wow, this is a nice song,.very lulling,.nice beat to it"...before long the song was soon over

..but wait,..it wasnt over!!...it just so happened there was a short period of silence, before the song came back to live wailing loud trumpets and some weird, eery noises that sounded off the wall that sounds a lot like what a fucked-up jack-in-the-box on crack would sound like....and these noises scared the flooded crap out of me,...it was totally unexpected!

so why would the Beatles add this weird ending to their song...the song itself, minus the weird ending would have sold on its own merits.

in fact,.i hate to dis-credit the world reknown Beatles on this song, but IMHO, Ive always like the Candy Flip version of the song much better.

    see for yourself...
