And hell is when that hdd dies.
I've invested in an Infrant ReadyNAS and filled it with 4 drives in a RAID 5 which left me with just over 1TB of space. The great thing is that if one hdd dies it has zero effect on me, I simply plug in a new one. Even if you just use it for backup it'd still be a PITA to restore a terabyte of backed up data. If I'm storing anything over 320GB I'm putting it into a RAID array for peace of mind.

Maybe you already got one but I had to make this decision a while ago and ended up with the Nikon D50 and then just purchased a couple great lenses. I have zero complaints and clearest photos I've ever seen.

I still just manually backup to dvd's but once I get my new server and raid array I'll start trying backup software again. If you want try http://www.freebyte. com/fbbackup/ and let me know if its any good. It at least seems to do everything you mentioned.

Azureus is great, but I find that it tends to suck down my system a lot.  I've been shopping around for a replacement, but haven't found much that struck my fancy.

Just in case its an easy fix:

No problem. You just have to "register" it once installed so it won't stop working after 30 days. Just put in fake info except real email if you want. Same key you get can be used on multiple computer and then you are set. The only other changes I make to it is stopping it from inserting a clean signature in outgoing emails and shutting off its splash screen when I launch outlook.
There have been 3 computers now that were running norton corp 9.0 and I ran a boot time scan of virus' with Avast and it removed a bunch norton couldn't. I've still ran across a bit of trojans, etc. that no virus scanner could remove but those were typically masquerading as BHO's living inside IE. So if you use firefox or Opera you'll be fine.

Edit: oh, although the VRDB is a great feature if you have a Winxp system with system restore enabled just save yourself the resources and disable it. It seemed to always be indexing my files and I have a really fast computer so for the one time I might ever need it I don't think its worth the hdd wear...
