I can't remember the scream being prsent when I saw it in 1977. Then again, I was 4.

Now in 2006, I can think of many ways that this 'scene' should have played out.

All of them involve a black leather "Torture Special Edition" version of the gold bikini minus the drapery and Vader not being her father. devil.gif

Anakin, who else? I was expecting to see the 'good man' mentioned in the OT, not a Jedi version of Kevin the Teenager.

And the sad thing is that it would have taken exactly ONE 60 second scene in episode 2 or 3 to establish this:

Beggar J with a withered hand: Please, Sir Skywalker. A pittance for a fallen man in the wilderness.

ANAKIN SKYWALKER: What? How do you know my name?

Beggar J: All things possible in ye, my lord.

ANAKIN SKYWALKER: I don't understand. But (fumbles for words) ...please, take these credits from me. There you go. May the Force be with you.

Beggar J: And also with ye, sir. Tis ye who decides.

ANAKIN SKYWALKER: What do you mean?

    Beggar J: Tis nothing, milord.

    Etc.

Ironically even Hayden could've played that off well.

Heck to satisfy Lucas's stereotypes of "no character shall grow without my permission," it could've even been followed by:

Obi-wan: You should not have given him your credits.

    ANAKIN: And why not?

Obi-wan: You don't know how he'll use them.

ANAKIN: I try to do good, Master. He was suffering. (looks down humbly)

This also would have illustrated exactly the point tha Luke got which Obi-wan and Yoda didn't...that the Force is also rooted in compassion in the present moment, not just conflict and empty ideals.

ANAKIN: It's worse... he's overly critical! He never
listens! He just doesn't understand. It's not fair!

No actor anywhere should ever have been required to say the words, "It's worse...he's overly critical!"

Can you picture Gregory Peck speaking those words? Sean Connery? Heck, even Jack Nicholson?

No, it took a new generation of actors to pull this off. Only Gen Y could step forward to claim that line.

But with Mark it would have sounded like a complaining teenager. With Hayden it sounds like Gen Y complaining collectively complaining about their ex-hippy parents to Dr. Phil.

About the only actor from the older generation I could picture uttering that masterpiece is a 19 year old Mark Hamill, which makes sense I suppose.

but Kuma, youve completely forgot that many companies would certainly want product placement in this newly revised version of E.T.

(television ad)..."when E.T. needs to phone home,.he chooses Verizon Wireless,.now with a new interplanetary network,.the fewest dropped calls,.no roaming,..and no other provider lets YOU choose what planet you call for free on the weekends....so 'BE GOOD',..and connect with Verizon Wireless,..the cellular company used by more extraterrestials than any other network!"

    yell.gif

Well that would certainly be planned for with numerous shots of ET looking for his phone around cell phone towers emblazoned with a huge VERIZON logo, and perhaps his space ship might have a billboard on the side as well.

Oh and let's not forget, it being 2006 Elliot would offer to share his cell phone with ET the first time the latter uttered "ET PHONE HOME ET PHONE HOME." And it would be a Verizon.
