It is very obvious GL should no longer be in power. A more competent individual should be responsible for the Star Wars franchise. For most people, SW is a way of life not GL's idea anymore. Before TPM came out, I have been quoted as saying: "it would take a genius to fuck up Star Wars". GL is obviously this genius. EP1 could have been nothing but constant lightsaber duels and starship battle sequences along with excellent dialogue and your average SW fan would have loved it. How could anyone possibly fuck this up?? I think we all know the answer to that.

I never thought Episode I could have been bad, much less, the piece of shit it turned out to be. Any SW fan knows what a SW movie should be. It should not be a child's movie or cartoon. Everything was wrong in TPM. SW has a different feel to it than any other movie ever made, or will be made. How did GL loose the vision of his own story so easily?

Is it possible that the real EP1 could be made now by someone else? Could we force GL to step down and allow someone else to re-release the REAL EP1? I honestly believe a bunch of monkeys locked in a room with nothing but crayons and construction paper could come up with a better movie than TPM and AOTC. My hope is that some day this will happen (not the monkey thing). I cannot live with the fact that the biggest disappointment in my life has been EP1. It could have been better. It should have been better. Is it possible for someone, or some group, to step up and make a real EP1? I, for one, am all for it. This is what I want to happen.

As time goes on, I'm convinced more and more that ANH and ESB were happy accidents, that Lucas was far and most clearly and undoubtly just plain...lucky.

He was lucky that he had so many creative people surrounding him, tempering him. He's lucky that he was constrained by a "small budget" as it taught him to creatively (but accidently) craft a better movie. He's lucky. Just lucky, and now the Force is no longer with him.

Agreed. He was very lucky indeed. And the scary part is that he probably does not appreciate it at all. Most likely, and many of us believe this, Lucas hates the greatest Star Wars movie The Empire Strikes Bac - because this was the movie over which he had the least control. I also say we are lucky that he didn't have today's technology when he made the original movies. Otherwise they would have been a bad CGI festival for sure.

Superrepus, it is good to see that you are still interested in doing the sequels right. You've obviously got more endurance than me. I'm afraid that the awful sequels and the rape and murder of the original movies (by the Special Editions) has destroyed my enthusiasm for Star Wars. All I want is for the prequels to be recalled and destroyed, the original movies to be released on DVD untainted by the special edition 'fuck-overs' and George Lucas to apologise for the whole thing.

In a perfect world, 20th Century Fox would have made sure they had the rights to Star Wars, not an insane individual like George Lucas. In this scenario, it would have been easy to save the franchise because Lucas would still have to run his intentions by the studio. Once he told them what he intended to do with Episode I and the studio executives saw that he was out of his head, they would hire someone else to make the movies.

See, I do not agree with that. Had 20th century retained its rights, we would not be waiting for the 6th and final Star Wars film, we would not believe that they were beating the dead horse of a franchise and releasing the 12th film in 26 years. They would have run that franchise into the ground so bad for every last penny, it would not have mattered how good the first two films are.

Granted, Lucas has fucked up the last two films...but I do not think it would have done the damage a regular studio would have.

I don't know. I think a studio would be more careful than George Lucas. Who knows? They may have wanted to get some academy awards for Star Wars to promote themselves - and therefore they would have tried to make stonger films aimed more towards the older viewers.

Regardless, I think Star Wars would have been a lot safer if George Lucas needed prior permission to touch it. Because had that been the case, I don't believe that permission would ever be granted... and Star Wars would be better off because of it.

Would anyone else like to comment on this? Share your own ideas.

I don't know. This is really a tricky thing. When Lucas first presented his treatment for Star Wars, they were pretty damn skeptical about it, and it was a big risk for them. I truly think they would've allowed him to continue on, especially for as well as ANH did.

I think the best to have done was to insist that Lucas turn the reins over to someone else, someone whom Lucas had approved. The prequels should've been made sooner than the '90's. It could've been done! It would've tempered the special effects, focused more on character and story, and given it to us in a timely manner.

Lucas did not need to put himself through all of this--and he didn't need to put his fans through all of this either. Damn, I wish I could go to an alternate reality where this happened....

...but since I have to deal in reality...

Here's what I'd like to have happen (and now mentioned in another post).

I want George Lucas to get pissed. I want him to say, "so, you don't like my movies, eh? Think you can do better? Here's $100 million... make one of your own."

And, then there would be a big contest... and you know what, the goof-ball gushers would enter, too!!! You know they would, the hypocrites. And then, some fan would make the film. It'll be great! Or, at least a hundred times better than TPM, and it'll go gang-busters, and it'll make more money than TPM, and Lucas would be obligated to fund the next prequel, and the third, and his craptacular prequels would be all forgotten---BWAHAHAHA!!!

Now, that would be poetic justice.
