QUOTE (SimeSublime @ Jun 25 2004, 06:23 AM)
I'm glad that somebodys finally doing something about this shit. It's just pathetic some of the things they send. Talking about spam in particular here. My old email account used to get some pretty horrific stuff. For example, last year during the war, I was getting spam for sites advertising pictures of Iraqui civillians being raped by the soldiers. Now I mean, that's bad enough, but consider this: they're sending this out randomly, they don't care who to. Putting a little message at the bottom of the ad(especially if the ad is full of graphic pictures)saying only click if you're 18 or older is NOT going to stop a seven year old being subjected to seeing this filth. It's absolutly disgraceful. I'm not one to complain about how porn degrades women and what not, but I do object to people advertising their beastiality/scatophillia/rape sites in a way that leaves them easily accessible to children.

wow you make a great point...i think, thats too long to read

I didn't think SimeSublime's post was too long to read, that's all. Took me all of twenty seconds to read through that.

Forget jyd's reading skills, or lack thereof.
Cutting down on spam is something that has been worked on for some time, but it isn't getting anywhere. That's why the subject lines are getting so creative now. You see, spammers must place an 18+ warning IN the subject line, if it contains certain phrases. They get around this now by using numerals in place of letters, periods in place of spaces, etc, etc, etc. It doesn't seem to matter what congress says, spammers just keep finding ways to "bend" the rules and keep pushing their shit in our faces.
As for spyware, it's already borderline illegal, so it should've been outlawed long ago.

I think Jyd's refering to the fact that I knew the point I wanted to make, but not how to make it, so I just rambled until it came through.

All I have to say right now is "Hooray for Spam-Blocker!" I can just block out most of the stuff by blocking off certain keywords like "viagra" or "mortgage" and anything of the sort, so usually I only get four of five visible pieces of spam a day. But one thing to keep in mind, though, is that it may not technically be the "sender's" fault you got spammed. Tons of people steel passwords and abuse other people's screen names every day. I think that even happened to me once a few years ago...I just remember getting an angry e-mail from somebody claiming that they were going to report me to AOL for sending them porn...

That spyware stuff is a bitch, though. It slows down my computer like you wouldn't believee! I've only had this one for just over a couple of weeks, and already I've had to delete about seventy different things like that!

NOTE: Did not actually read all of the other posts. I have a wandering attention span...
Check out my crappy drawings!

Absolutely! Get a spyware removal program and you'd be surprised at how much stuff gets on without your permission and how often. Also, the other thing is that a lot of spyware doesn't allow you to delete it.

This is bullshit. YOU are the administrator of your computer, NOT the Gator corporation or any of those other wankers. If you click on a file and click delete, it should delete. I get really annoyed when I try to remove something and I get a message saying access denied or the file is write-protected. It is taking up valuable space and using all my computing power to download pop-up ads - I want it off the system pronto.

Laws against spyware have been a long time coming.

You know what's funny. Since our generation was the first to use the internet (since 1997?) we will tell our grand kids one day how easy they have it without the spam and viruses.

It will be like when our grandparents told us how easy we have it since we don't have to walk 53 miles to the nearest post office to get the mail.

That's true. I like that - spam and spyware is the stuff we'll use to bitch to the younger generation in our older years... "Ah, you kids today have so good."

"Why, in my day, I had to scour my inbox and delete TWO THOUSAND spam messages a day!"
"What's 'spam', grandpa?"
"Email that wants me to make my privates bigger."

Oh, those are the days I anticipate.
