With the approach of Spider-Man 2 comming out this summer, I feel it is time to roast this unbelievably overrated movies series!!!

First let me get some consensus from others on Spider-Man 1

BTW Sorry for my new avatar being in such poor quality. I tried to dowload a bitmap and convert it into a gif file, but for some reason it came out like this. Anyone know why

The picture is of director Kevin Smith,.......who is actually a pretty fair representation of what i look like in real life. Unfortunately tongue.gif

I liked the scene where he goes to the wrestling tournament and they introduce him as "the amazing spider man"

and he shouts: (you dummies!) "It's the 'Human Spider!'" tongue.gif

You can't say that yet, you have to see Spider-man 2 first. And I'll stay out of this one, I enjoyed the movie. Yeah there was some pretty bad acting and some very obvious effects, but it was fun. And I love Willem Dafoe. Is it overrated? Yes. Should it have been such a box office smash? No. But I thought it was fun, and that's enough for me.

Spider-Man (say about it what you will) was one of the most fun movie experiences I've had in AGES. I couldn't get enough of that movie. If it had come out 15 years earlier when I was in the peak of my comic book loving I would have simply died... it would have been that good.

It's friggin' Spider-Man. Taking it for what it is worth (and in the scope of comic book movies) it is purely brillian. Two Raimis and a Campbell can't go wrong!

I'm with you, Mike, on this one. I thought Willaim Dafoe was so over the top, it was unbelievable. I particularly hated the romantic dialogue in the movie - or the dialogue in general. Bad dialogue, cringe worthy dialogue is something that really tarnishes a movie.

"When you saw Mary Jane move in next door, you asked me 'Is that an angel?'"

I can live quite happily without hearing lines like that. However, that said, Toby McGuire was very good - and I think the guy who acted his uncle did a good job too. Kirsten Dunst was not too bad either... although that girl has got really bad teeth for a well-paid actress. It's not her fault but actors and actresses get paid big money to look good and be in good condition. Most of them can afford make-overs in the dentistry department. Why can't she? She looks like she has monster teeth.

As for Spider Man 2, I'm optimistic about this film for two reasons -

1. William Dafoe won't be in it. and
2. Now that they've spent all that time setting up the characters, they can just get on with it and actually make a movie.

Following on from point 2, the first Spider Man took far too long to develop its characters. Everyone knows how Spider Man came to be ..... they could have just shown it in flashbacks or something.... ah, what the hell. I'm sure I'm in the minority on this one so I won't go on about it. Besides, it's time I went to work.

Comments for all:

1) Kevin Smith sucks. I could go on and on (you all know this) but only if someone opens a thread (to date I have never opened one thread! LEGEND!)
2) There's no point being so down on SPIDERMAN. It's ok, and lots of fun, despite the embarrassing 9/11 inspired scene on the Brooklyn Bridge. Gag.
3) Willem Defoe is ok, but Sam Raimi always asks for too much over-the-top. I think SPIDERMAN would have done well to be more like UNBREAKABLE and less like DARKMAN (without coming too close, naturally).
4) I liked the set up of the character in SPIDERMAN. It was faithful to its source, unlike the nonsense of say, SUPERMAN, BATMAN, BATMAN FOREVER, THE HULK, and DAREDEVIL, to name a few off the top of my head.
5) Kirsten Dunst is all right. Not all movie actresses should have perfect teeth. We have been stuck on image over substance for too long. Some of our greatest actors would not have had careers had the 70s not been about everyman. Let's have another period like that, why don't we? Perfect teeth aren't all that common, so let's have more actresses with imperfect teeth.
6) On the subject of imperfect teeth, give me Canada's Sarah Polley over Kirsten Dunst any day. Not some Hollywood party girl; cute with brains instead. Giddyup!

Sam Neill? that would have rocked.

The starlog article talks of them getting an actor large enough to fit with the arms/suit. It looks cool regardless. (to me anyway)

the guy they got played Indy's disloyal guide in Raiders I believe. I was late to view Spider-Man, but it was still in the cinema. I'm looking forward to it.

awesome responsibility was a little overdone though.

They should have had Venom in this movie.

And maybe a Cameo from Carnage.
Booze-fueled paragon of pointless cruelty and wanton sadism.

I think they'd be saving that for the third. I'm annoyed, I was supposed to be going to see Spiderman 2 the day it comes out, but I'll be away on holiday next week and will miss the premier. Dammit.

I'd like to see Spiderman 2. I'm sure it'll be better than the first one.... although I have absolutely nothing to base that assumption on.

alright, I can see I'm in the minority here. But I didnt like Spiderman. I've never been a fan of Willem DaFoe, and I LOATHE Tobey McGuire. He's just so nerdy and wooden in every movie he's in. There's at least 50 other actors that I would have preferred to Tobey as the lead in this role.
Kirsten Dunst is ok, and yes, whoever mentioned Sarah Polley, I completely agree with you.

I did like the music score, but I found it too much a rip off of Batman motifs.
The CGI was also wretched. It was like they were to lazy to have Tobey actually swing on a real rope and instead just replaced every scene with a CG equivalent just to speed things up.

I will however still go and see part 2, since I also believe it will be better than part 1.

I'm surprised how some of you guys didn't like Dafoe in this, I thought he was one of the best parts of the movie, and he's good in everything he's in.
