Palpatine would grow clone duplicates of his bodies to act as receptacles for his evil life force should his body die. With this technique, Palpatine had escaped death time and again. He called for Skywalker to kneel before him and become his apprentice. Skywalker, realizing that the Emperor was almost invincible, knelt before him, and agreed to join the dark side.

Nough said..

WTF?
I know that you believe you understood what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you read is not what I meant.

I know, I know... That's why I never read any of the EU stuff.

That's taken from the Zahn books. It's not the best paraphrasing, I have to admit. But those were some pretty cool books.

Yes, this is a pretty childish plot-line.

This isn't. This happens to come from the greatest Star Wars writer ever - Timothy Zahn. I like this man because he writes mature novels that really expand the Star Wars universe in an interesting and intelligent way.

People who don't appreciate the true value of Timothy Zahn's work don't appreciate good strong writing.

If you are looking for a worse Star Wars writer than George Lucas, the man you are looking for is Kevin J. Anderson. This man writes novels with all the intelligence and flair of a six year old scribbling short stories on the back of a school book with a magic marker.

Well, the one about the clone of Luke doesn't sound quite as bad. But the other one is awful. The idea of Luke going to the Dark Side drives me crazy.

BTW, who wrote the official novelisation of the OT? I only ever glanced through it, but the quality of the writing seemed pretty poor.

I was going to say something in reply, but our guest beat me to it. Hear hear. Timothy Zahn's novels are excellent.

That other plotline however, sounded awful.

Regarding the novelisation of the original trilogy, I don't know who did it but I know what you're talking about, Helena. The writing was not very inspiring.

Wasn't it Alan Dean Foster? Didn't he "ghost" SW?

He wrote Splinter of the Mind's Eye, which was a novel set between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. This was a VERY long time ago... and I haven't read it so I don't know for certain.

From what I can remember, George Lucas wrote the novelisation for Star Wars himself and Donald F. Glut (unfortunate name) wrote the novelisation for The Empire Strikes Back. However, I don't know who wrote the novelisation for Return of the Jedi and not surprisingly, I don't really care. It wasn't me though.

A clone of Luke? You know what, this is possibly the 2nd dumbest thing I've ever seen in my entire. Just hideous. Thank goodness that the only EU novel I read was a poorly written 'Junior Jedi Knights' book several years ago.

It doesn't sound good in the blurb, Paladin. But if you read the Timothy Zahn novels, I think you would change your opinion. Well, I hope you would anyway.

Actually, there is another thing that bothers me most about these quotes. It's not simply the (kinda bad) ideea of cloning Luke, and turning Luke to the dark side, etc..
What really got to me was the cloning... first (or did the EU came before ATOC?) we get an entire army made up of clones of Bobba Fett.. turns out it might be possible all of the imperial soldiers are actually clones aswell.. then we have a clone of Luke made from it's severed hand.. and also we have the Emperor cloning himself to act as receptacles.. anyone begining to see a pattern here?

Cloning was never an issue in the OT.. not even in Ep. I was it even remotelly portrayed that cloning might be common practice in the SW universe.. Now it seems like every family has a Clone-O-Matic in their household.. soon people in Ep. III will start using rubber headsets to prevent dropping hair folicules that might be used by the Emperor to build clones of themself .. unsure.gif

Just wait and see: I'm predicting Qui-Gon will return in Ep. III not as a ghost, but as a clone made from some string of hair he dropped when he visited Anakin on Tatooine.. or some other silly s**t like that
I know that you believe you understood what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you read is not what I meant.

I guess you're right. But the only problem I'm facing right now is the fact that I haven't read a single novel in more than a year/

Interestingly enough, I've also suffered from writers block for equally as much time. I think that I should try to get started on writing some short stories to get my writing spirit back up.

Cloning in Timothy Zahn's novels was pretty original at the time. It hadn't been explored before and nobody let him know anything about the prequels because of that stupid secrecy thing they had going (ie. they didn't want people to know that the movies were crap before they actually saw them).

That's right - Timothy Zahn's novels were out a long time before either the special editions or the prequels. And they handled cloning in a very convincing and interesting manner. I advise anyone who is condemning this work to actually read it first before they formulate their opinions on it. Then get back to me.
