Truck hauling bees crashes in Montana
Dumps honey, sending bees on rampage

Wednesday, June 16, 2004 Posted: 11:08 AM EDT (1508 GMT)

BOZEMAN, Montana (AP) -- A tractor-trailer overturned on a curve on a highway, spilling its load of hundreds of bee hives and unleashing some nine million angry honey bees.

The bees buzzed furiously as driver Lane Miller, his arm scraped to the bone, struggled to flee his rig after it overturned Monday in Bear Trap Canyon west of Bozeman. The truck slid across the highway before coming to a stop between guardrails.

"I had to kick the windshield out of the front of the cab and the bees were on me from that moment," said Miller, 41. "I've never felt so much fear in my life."

Miller walked away from the crash, and two people picked him up and took him to the hospital. Miller underwent surgery on his arm and suffered bruises and about 20 stings.

The state road was closed for 14 hours as crews and beekeepers cleaned up the 512 hives Miller was hauling from Idaho to North Dakota.

In spite of bee suits and extra clothing, beekeeper Gary Clark said he counted about 60 stings of his own.

"Everybody had literally thousands of bees on them, in their hats and on their suits," Clark said. "When we pulled the boxes out, big globs of them would fall on us."

Firefighters directing traffic also suffered stings.

"The bees were so agitated you could barely see the beekeepers or the wreckage itself, just because of the cloud of bees that were swarming," said fire chief Shawn Christiansen.

It wasn't until 3 a.m. Tuesday that a tow truck got in to haul out the tractor-trailer, leaving behind pools of honey from the overturned hives.

State Transportation Department employees dropped sand on the road to soak up the sticky mess.

Bees. A truck full of bees. A crash. 9 million angry bees. Bees on a rampage.

Any way you slice it, that's just hilarious!

That's Great. Hope the driver recoups ok. Around here the camera-hungry Weatherman would have broke into scheduled programming, had the Simpsons been on.

Isn't Montana a state with No Speed Limit on the highway (besides honey?)

Hmmm. Maybe I shoulda read that a little more carefully before posting. Sounds pretty bad.

But c'mon! Bees!

Yeah, Montana has no speed limit.

All the stings are pretty tragic, but everything else is quite funny.

Plus, reading the title makes one think of hoardes of floaty insects pulling a truck along...

Yup, add a single hyphen and it's "Truck-Hauling Bees". Funny.

Also, I recall Tycho from Penny Arcade claiming that his worst nightmares involved bees once. That's really all that I have to add at the moment.

Bees are so much fun, they're an excuse to set fire to, explode, or throw rocks at just about anything... then run really fast.

Well, yeah. Why do you think I included running inside really fast? Bees are like the WMD of the domestic world. Anytime you feel like destroying something just say you saw some bees in it.

In Australia, we have white ants for that - these little buggers eat wood like no-one's business. Just another critter that disproves the existence of a loving God (along with mosquitoes, green ants, harmful bacteria, jellyfish and deadly parasites).

When you come to think about it, bees aren't too bad. Also, they die once they've stung you... so if they do sting you, then you can probably imagine they were really upset and they weren't just doing it for a laugh.

Wasps on the otherhand....

Having said that, last time a bee stung me, it stung me on my thumb and my thumb became ten times its normal size... so I think my childhood immunity to the critters has changed somewhat. So I take it carefully around bees a bit more now.

White ants sound exactly like termites.

Anyway, as far as your "loving God" comment, these animals are all a part of the balance of nature. I think they help to prove God's existence in a way. Plus if there were nothing out there to annoy/harm humans, I think the world would be a far worse place than it is.

Oh well yeah, you live in Australia, the home of the deadliest critters on earth and, incidentally, one of the most beautiful. I don't think they disprove god's existence, he gave us pot, alcohol, the internet, cult films, jolt and the original trilogy to show he loves us, but then he produced all the things on your list and the PT to show he can still get down to some smitin' if we screw up.
