'Will anyone sleep with my Down's syndrome son?' Mother makes appeal for a lover for 21-year-old Otto

Like most mothers Lucy Baxter wants her child to live a fully rounded life - including the experience of a physical relationship and even finding love.

But her 21-year-old son Otto has Down's syndrome and has had trouble finding a partner.

So she is appealing for women to come forward so Otto can 'enjoy the same experiences as other men his age'.

She says she is even prepared to go so far as to pay for a prostitute for her adopted son.

Miss Baxter, 50, also hopes he may one day become a father - despite the controversy this may attract.

'Society has a learning disability when it comes to Down's syndrome,' she said.

'Why should these people be kept separate and pigeon-holed when they have the same emotions, desires and feelings as so-called normal people?

'If he doesn't get a girlfriend, I will feel really bad, because I have sold him this thing that he is like everybody else. That's why I'm working overtime to get this sorted for him.'

Miss Baxter from Abingdon, Oxfordshire is single and has never married but has three other adopted sons - James, 27, Titus, 14, and Raphael, seven. They all have Down's syndrome.

She has already helped James to set up a page on a social networking website to invite potential partners to come forward for him.

'I'd like all my boys to find love and enjoy sex,' she said.

'I would have no problem paying for Otto to go to Amsterdam to visit a brothel if that's what he wanted.

'A few of his friends suggested it a few months ago and since then I've talked to Otto about it in an adult way. Why shouldn't he enjoy the same experiences as other men?'

Ah... "This is my son. He is a virgin and a retard."

What is it with moms and their compulsive need to embarrass their sons?

4 kids with down syndrome is probably about the same hassle as eight normal kids. She should totally go on some sort of retardian gladiators program with the octo-mom and battle it out. Octomom could use themoney to have more kids, and downer mom could use the money for four prostitutes for her kids, either way their powers will be increased, the effects ofwhich on national security are mystery.

I think if you're paying, it's procuring. And he'd be paying, no doubt about that.

TruJade, the mom is just acting as matchmaker. The son wants what she's trying to get for him. There's nothing illegal about it; it's just funny.

Being that people with Down's syndrome typically act like children in the ages of 5 to 6 years, I wonder if this is what Otto really wants. I'm sure he's gone through puberty, but I am also speculating that it wasn't a normal puberty like that of a teenager without Down's syndrome.

However, my laughs came from Ninja Duck's avatar. I saw that right after reading the article. laugh.gif Nice.

Also, what is with this woman adopting all these kids with this vexation. No matter how old they get, they are always going to act like six year olds. And are people with Down's syndrome a choice quality in breeding?

Doesn't this border on some ethical debate somewhere? I mean, when people look for a potential mate versus a potential lay, a mate is usually one with an IQ of average or higher to yield a good to high possibility of no such malady in the offspring. If this mother seeks her "children" to find love, I'm also guessing she seeks to have "grandchildren" from them, but their breeding may very well be detrimental rather than beneficial, especially in light of a good set of genes being passed on.

Downs is a genetic disorder, yes, and it is recessive, so the chances are good that a Downs person will have perfectly healthy children, unless he mates with another Downs person (in which case I believe Downs is guaranteed, but what I can't remember about high school biology could fill the entire textbook). In the former case, the recessive trait will be passed on and it will resurface again later (if not right away). This is not an argument for sterlization nor for eugenics.

I agree that everyone has a right to a full life; this woman agrees a little more than I do howveer, and has opted to make of her life a damned crusade to make get that short bus a-rockin.'

Vesuvius: That's what I strive for.

Civ: Wikipedia says that males with Down Syndrome can't reproduce (or at least, they very rarely can), so your arguments for sterilization and eugenics are moot here. Down syndrome happens when there are three 21st chromosomes instead of two, so I guess sperm cells just don't know how to divide that last one. But I guess he could adopt and start a nest like his mother did.

EDIT: Wow, okay, here's an online profile of his from the article. Note the "relationship status" and "scared of" parts. Picture

You mean his non-existant argument for sterilization? That one?

Also, I am perturbed that no one has gotten behind my proposal to have the downer mom & family fight octomom & family on pay per view. The amounth of babies and feces being thrown would be awesome enough that, once the pay per view reven ues were over, the film rights could be sold at lucrative rates to a hentai company.

He's 21. It's not child abuse. It's man-child abuse.
