As all of you know, good ol' Yahtzee does have a very limited amount of genres that he actually likes. He hates JRPGs, hates sports games (but what real gamer doesn't?), doesn't get fighting games.

what games might actually change his mind about a genre that he doesn't like and not write them off completely?

the only ones i can think of right now would be some JRPGs. here they are:

1. The ORIGINAL Kingdom Hearts - good gameplay and story, but a little bit of a childish tone, but not a kiddy game.

2. Radiata Stories - main character hates everybody and makes a smart ass comment almost literally 95% of time when he speaks and is one of the most hilarious games i have ever played. combat is a little weak though.

3. Tales of Symphonia (i havn't played abyss yet so i can't recommend it although i'm sure its better because the combat system is) - overall good story and gameplay is really fun. characters are awesome and so many hilarious scenes. near the end though, the main character kinda becomes the funnel for the game designers moral stances on......well the world which makes him really annoying. also his stupid friend, genis (or more accurately called "Genis the Penis"), and his girl Colette can jump off a cliff for all i care

so what other games are exceptions to their genres and why?

The aforementioned games are not exceptions from their genre. I've found that all JRPG games suck, and it all boils down to them being developed by the Japanese. First result is that they're all clichéd and extremely badly written, second is that they're not really fun gameplay-wise.

I still love Final Fantasy VII. Mr. Strife's internal struggle about his own identity was very well written, in my opinion. True, you'll find clichée parts everywhere and they can really bring the overall experience down, but then again, the Japanese haven't patented that thought. Whether you like their way of expressing their creativity is still all up to you, so there's no real point in trying to get people to like a genre if they just can't get into the whole thing with the strange hairstyles and oh-so-cute acting and what not.

Edit: Also, two subtle hints hidden in this. So either he's just covering for his macho image, which is unlikely, or he's being extremely selective, or it has nothing to do with anything whatsoever.

well that's kinda why i like those games. they HAVE gameplay. FF7 has one of the best stories i've ever seen, but menu based fighting is NOT gameplay. radiata stories probably breaks down all of the cliche that most writing in JRPG is littered with. however i did mention that the gameplay is a little bit too simplistic, but i love the characters because it's so well written and they are so hilarious.

Kingdom hearts original doesn't really have a cliche story line, but the writing could have been tons better. gameplay is so much fun and actually can take *gasp* strategy if you aren't playing on easy rather than smashing the x button to attack. the 2nd one went down hill and made the whole game button mashing which was sad indeed. sadly chain of memories is in my list of top 5 worst level design of any game ever made.

tales of symphonia again has good writing (until the end like the last area you go to, but that's like 20 min. of game play at the most and probably less than that if you decide to just run to the last boss in which case probably takes 10-15 min.) gameplay is well done, but could improve like the tales series has done by making you be able to actually run around in a 3d plane, but symphonia was made a long time ago. characters are likable besides the 2 i mentioned. good story, but a little bit jrpg typical in some parts (mainly the beginning, but thank God for multiple plot twists).

Yahtzee would probably like Shadow of the Colossus, being the "games are art" hippie that he is. Although I suppose that's it's more action-adventure than a new genre. "Japanese" doesn't really count as a genre.

Almost everything in Japanese literature, mythology or religion is borrowd, stolen, ripped off or influenced by neighboring countries, except for their cultural stuff, considering how queer the Jap culture is.

I learned to ignore them.

Ofcourse, they have some nice surrealists, though I can only think of a handfull who are original.
Katamari was great.
Kirby was...well, it would've been funny if he blew up.

I wonder how Harry Sue Strife would look in 40 years?
-Bald?
-weathered?
-Dead?

True. I guess the moral today is to treat some games as indavidual products the same way Soviet union treated its own people.

in one of his ZP episodes doesn't he mention that he likes shadow of the colossus? i personally am sold that he will never like fighting games since he doesn't really like the 3d ones he's tried (soul calibur), the 2d ones (street fighter), and the off the wall type of fighting (smash bros. brawl which by the way is one of if not my favorite games of all time).

if fire emblem was played and he didn't like it i would probably be sold on him not liking strategy games either although i wouldn't be surprised if he crucified the fact that all cutscenes and the story is almost entirely text driven and its just character sprites talking in a certain background if you're outside of battle.

can't think of any multiplayer console games he would like since halo and smash bros have already been blown out of the water.......

Fighting games are still 2-1/2D, despite having side-stepping added.

The phrase 2.5D can fuck off; you can travel in 3 dimensions, it's 3D.

3d fighting is very different from 2d mainly because the throw button isn't overpowered in 2d ones. in 3d ones you can just toss people off the stage over and over again. and attacks send you in different directions, which again i guess help contribute to ring outs. also 3d ones you can button mash with your face and still be awesome at the game where as 2d ones you actually need talent at the game, save for marvel vs. capcom 2 where you can button mash.

Meh, I dunno about the button mash thing. As a general rule I've found game owners beat their friends more often then not because they've played the game more, even in fighting games.

Russia -> Pre-Ottoman Turkish
Turkaman -> Mongol

Yeah, yeah, I get your point. dry.gif

Forgive me, I was refering to Japan's culture of isolation. Not sure that would make sense either.

If you want to get him into JRPGs, you'll have a hard time with any of the Final Fantasy games. I personally haven't delved very deeply into the genre so I would be unable to suggest anything there.

As far as multiplayer/strategy games go, I really liked Carcassonne on XBLA. It was deep as a strategy game, yet accessible. You don't need any friends, since you can play against the computer or against faceless opponents over the net (generally Carcassonne players are not 8-year-olds calling you a cock). Also, Civilization 4 with all the expansions is unbelievable.

I kind of feel for him with RTS's, I'm not big into them. Sins of a Solar Empire was supposed to be good.

I'll come back later.
