Barbarian does not reference the Barbary Coast, by the way. It simply means "foreign." The Barbary Coast borrows its name from the same word, but "barbarian" has an independent origin, and "barbarians" can come from anywhere. And of course now the word has virtually no meaning; nobody calls any groups of people "barbarians" anymore.

I know nobody is likely to care, but that doesn't seem to matter in this thread, so I think I'll point out that the word barbarian comes to us from Ancient Greek ("Barbaros", IIRC), used to refer to people whose native tongue wasn't Greek, as their language sounded like the bleating of sheep.

As nobody's native tongue is ancient greek anymore, it would seem to be a fairly inclusive term nowdays.

Actually it's from Warhammer 40,000. I choose it way back when, when GW was still producing things that people would by for reasons other than the GW logo, and a new ideas weren't restricted solely to "an even more evil, even ancienter and all-powerfuler monster that has secretely been manipulating the fate of the universe since before everyone else was secretly manipulating the universe has suddenly always been in existence". I came up with it for the GW forums, until they closed them, and used it (and that avatar) on the Black Library forums until I got banned for pointing out what happened to the quality of their books in recent years several times too many.

I agree, the racial stereo typing crossed the line too. What's the line? (you might ask). Tribalism. Attempts at dehumanizing the "other" by use of labeling. Labels that then are imbued with emotional context, love or hate. Do you have any gay friends (that you know of)? Ask them if "faggot" is an offensive or hate filled word to them. What do you think the answer is?

BTW, any chance that the guy who named himself after a dice game will review these comments? I was hoping to have an impact on his life.
