it doesn't make any sense for a black dude to innocuously refer to another black dude as a nigger, yet a white dude offensively. If neither of them use the word with malice, both of them should recieve the same treatment.

And yet they don't.

Here in London, we have all kinds of Gays; From respectable and social ones to those who follow you around any corner and look like serial rapists.

Fags, Niggers, Kikes, Rag heads, Crackers, Mongies, Queers...all these words are meant to treasured. These are what makes all languages stand out.

I think the less we hear from you the better. I don't even know what a 'mongie' is supposed to be.

Adam, I'm not sure what your question is. If you're suggesting that the word "nigger" ought to be considered just as bad when a black guy says it as when a white guy does, well then I disagree. It will always be more offensive when a white guy says it. This is not in my opinion the same as allowing one group dominance over our langauage, or whatever other hyperbole you were trying to reach.

The words in our langauge, in any language, are not neutral items marking ideas or objects. Many of our words have more than one meaning, and the meaning used depends on the other words used with it. So too the speaker can add dimension not obvious in the use of the word itself. The context in which words are used has always been, will always be, and should always be very greatly affected by context.

Can we all go around calling each other faggots and niggers, or can't we?

Of course not, we're not all faggots and niggers.

In Rush Hour, an unwitting Jackie Chan refers to a black guy at a pool hall as a nigger. He got offended, but we did not. We knew he didn't mean anything offensive by it. Asian or no, when he said that word it was only offensive to someone who thought he was being offensive.

If anyone seriously believes Yahtzee is being offensive, let them get offended.

EDIT: The spacing is now logical.

EDIT2: Upon review, he clearly says Black-suited Spider-man goes out to beat up faggots because Black-suited Spider-man is stereotypically cold and masculine, and so he would call everyone he beats up a faggot. It's called a point-of-view shift, and they're fun.

EDIT3: See the end of EDIT2.

Sounds racist and discriminatory to me, if a white speaker adds an offensive dimension but a black speaker does not, regardless of their intent.

It IS racist, sure, but not in the way you imagine. To try to fight for your white right to continue to use a word charged with a history of racism would also be racist.

I don't have any idea what you're trying to prove here, which is odd since I've heard the "It's just a word; words are neutral; white people should be allowed to say "nigger" alongside black people in peace and harmony" argument recited by about about a thousand times now by young white kids on the internet. I have never understood it: it is utterly racist for white people to use the word "nigger" to describe black people, and we have about 400 years of usage to prove it. So why should white people be arguing to be allowed to use it now? Because they think black people are getting away with something when THEY use it? It's utterly different when black people use it.

You want to call that "racist" well yeah, go ahead. It sounds like you're trying to imagine some fantasy land where race doesn't actually matter to anyone. You are living in a fantasy land, concocted between periods in your sophomore year at city college. You are not talking about the real world.

I call this "fantasy land" the future, or rather my ideal vision of it. You can mock me all you want for being idealistic, but if you're going to support your perspective of the world through the last 400 years of racism over the last 40 years of civil rights movements, then by all means continue to wallow in the universe in which the film Crash is set; I'd much rather eliminate racism in all its forms, be it physical or lingual. And to be absolutely precise I am not 'fighting for the right' to shout nigger everywhere: I merely wish there to be consistency in the way we speak. As I stated, either a word is inherently offensive, or it isn't; it cannot be both, especially not depending on such a discriminatory policy as the colour of the speaker.

(Incidentally I enjoyed your implicit, condescending attacks on how old you think I am. If your response will be in the same manner, then to save time I can always lie down and say you win this one because I'm a dumb kid and you're a mature adult.)

I wish you luck, AdamM, in your effor to "eliminate racism in all its forms." But even when you do that very thing, context will still matter for nearly every word. Words will never mean exactly one thing in every context no matter what. And that's not me calling you an immature kid; that's a fairly simple understanding of langauge.

The problem with people making the claim to "idealism" is that they become insufferable around people with whom they may actually have a lot otherwise in common. For instance, I would like to see a society with fewer problems whose origin was race. Meanwhile I also believe that as an educated white professional, I should never use the word "nigger." While we agree on the former concept, you blow hard about how beause you are an "idelaist," and you make this out to be some superior vision of a future equality. Like, unless I agree that all words should be treated equally, then I can never be considerd an idealist, by any definition of that word.

Dude. I would love to see an elimination of violence and poverty, of racial divides, of sexism, etc. But in the meantime, and by that I mean the rest of my life, I will recognize when a guy is using the word "faggot" with hate on his mind and when it is in the context of humour ("a blonde walks into a bar ... "), and I will recognize that joke or no joke, I can't say the word "nigger."

Being an idealist doesn't have to mean the same thing as deciding to believe in the unlikely and the impossible, eg a perfectly descriptive language free of nuance, dialect and possible misinterpretation, such as no culture has had in the history of the species. Being an idealist instead can mean pragmatically working toward an achievable end, ie equality before the law and eradication of racial ghettos. And by being the latter sort of idealist, you won't come off as a kid too young to remember how annoying those people were who used the term "Politically Correct" to describe themselves (mid-80s to mid-90s).

I wouldn't. Call me crazy, but homogenous things are boring, like jello...
but throw some pineapples in that bitch and the whole is better than the sum of its parts! If we are all the same, then an individual can't shine. Even if some individuals don't exactly shine, and we would like to just leave them in a closet for awhile. At least they aren't trying to change just so we can all get along.

Some retarded metaphor that proves that violence, poverty and racial division make life a lot more interesting.
