Maybe a few details about what this, I think, game, is might be helpful? smile.gif
I am writing about Jm in my signature because apparently it's an effective method of ignoring him.

It really is spam. You stick up a link to your city, and the more people that visit the link, the bigger your city gets. Spam spam is spam. Nobody goddamn listens to me anymore.

The more visits, the larger the population, industry, etc. It takes a little while for your city to get off the ground, but then it starts growing pretty fast. I went up +140 last night. If you make a city, give me the link, and I will visit it. We can exchange.

Interesting concept and all, and I've got no problems with it, (even if I did, I couldn't do anything about it) but wasn't this thread closed by Slade?

It's just not spam. I can understand that you may not like it, which is fine, but it isn't spam. It's no more spam than MySpace or Facebook or whatever silly little web-based game comes along.

But no, not spam.

While they're all certainly little and silly, they're all spam. MySpam and Facebook's core applications don't make use of the spam concept and instead trust their communities to live up to the dreams of viral marketing - I'm almost okay with that, because it's usually only an internal thing on those sites and you normally don't have that much trouble with ignoring it.

Yet this stuff here is a simple and obvious pyramid scheme.

So yes, spam.

I see spam as unsolicited links to marketing from bots or members with zero contribution apart from said link. This fellow showed up to post opinions about STAR WARS, and now he has posted a link to some gay little game he's playing online. This isn't spam, it's an effort to be a member of an online community. Don't play the game if it doesn't look interesting to you (I won't play it; it doesn't look interesting to me). But what's so spammy about it? Folks here have played a lot of dumb online games with one another, from pirate roleplaying games to various gay little word games to the briefly-hosted arcade games, at which I kicked all your asses on Asteroids, IIRC.

In general, if you think you're going to have a bad reaction to following a link from a member whose content you don't generally follow, well you shouldn't follow the link. If that member only has one post, and that post is only to promote a link, well chances are that's spam.

My 2 cents. Glad to see this topic is getting attention. This is the sort of nonsense we like to nitpick about here at chefelf dot com.

I'm going to say its spammy, but not spam. Just posting a link, with no context or anything, is a bad idea period in any context in this age of e-viruses and web based terrorism and donkeysex.coms and whatnot. But since its not meant to visibly profit anyone I can't really call it spam.

Although any service that encourages you to spam people to win their stupid game or make friends or gain internet power, IS guilty of third party spamming, in my opinion. I don't give a shit if your pikoman hatches and becomes a pikomandui because I was the fortieth person duped into clicking on it. However, the company that encourages that kind of crap is at fault for requiring people to spam.

However, DocGero isnt since hes clearly ready to discuss his link.

So the company that made the game is spamming by proxy?

Exactly.

And yes, he had the decency to not be sneaky about it, but also the indecency to fall for it in the first place, thus helping to spread it to people who won't be as nice.

Sorry to always agree with civ2, but I can't help it if he's always right! I think he summed it up nicely.

Anyway. Not spam.

I say it is, but given that everyone seems torn on whether it is, or isn't, spam, just...y'know...don't fucking click the link. If it's THAT AWFUL TO YOU, just fucking ignore it and go away.

How difficult is this?

As a bit of advice to the OP, however, if you want to get people to visit your gay little city game, just put a link to it in your signature and leave it at that, rather than starting an entire topic just to try and advance said gay little city game in your favour.
