I didn't see any topic relating to this show, and now that it's on DVD, it deserves a bit of commentary; especially after over twenty years of not seeing it.

First off, I found myself laughing at things about the show that I would not have found funny at all when being around five years old. It's really a different show altogether now.

Secondly, "Grouchy" Smurf is very ahh, ... misan-smurfic, to say the least. I know these Smurfs have their own harmonious society and all, but that guy should have been either exiled or exiled himself a while ago if he's that unhappy with all of his kin.

Third: I didn't know this when I was young, but Gargamel made Smurfette! Seriously! Now this gets me to thinking... if Gargamel knows how to make Smurfs, then did he make all of the Smurfs? Does this explain why there doesn't need to be any other female Smurfs? I dunnoooo...

Lastly, (for now) "Jokey" Smurf. Okay, how is it in this society of these Smurfs, not one of them can see what's coming from the wrapped gift box? It's going to be a bomb in every one of them and all the Smurfs obliviously fall for it! I'm wondering when a smurf like "Sarcastic" Smurf will say something like "Hey, that Jokey is a real Smurfhole!"

When you're only three apples high, you don't have a lot of room in that brain for things like memory. I think that's why Jokey gets away with what he does, and why Grouchy hasn't been exiled, for instance.

I mean, if we were to try to take all of these archetypal stereotypes even a little bit seriously.

I'm glad the Smurfs came and went when they did. We just narrowly avoided having a Politically Correct Smurf, who would mistake all manner of mundane commentary be equivalent to hate speech, and all of the Smurfs themselves to be damaging stereotypes, (except for himself of course).

"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

That was the worst show ever. I never understood why it got to be so popular. Were kids just stupid? It wasn't interesting to me at any point in my life, no matter how much people tried to shove it at me. Same with the Gummy Bears, Care Bears, and those damned pink horses. Those shows were practically insulting.

...No offense to anyone that liked those shows. unsure.gif

Civ - I like the concept of "Politically Correct" Smurf just because he's ruin the show, and I'm sure it would have been done if the show continued... or if the show made a comeback and it's all CGI.

Spoon - I only liked the show as a 5 year old because it was a cartoon. I favored Muppet Babies really. And the list of cartoons that you hated, yeah, that was my list too.

does anyone here remember the cartoon called "the snorks"?, it usually came on right after the smurfs on most nationwide telecasts

Yes, I do. That show was creepy. Were those... *growths* on the top of their heads really necessary?? ... And it was just as dumb as the smurfs. At least there were more females, at least I think.

Yes, I remember the Snorks, and Spoon's right again, it was bad.

Heh, growths... they didn't do anything with them. They didn't breathe air, but they had snorkels to breathe water. Foolishness!
