QUOTE
It saddens me that so many in America are not ready to celebrate this event and call for more like it. We should see it as an example, not a crime. Bush killed 4000 of us and has imprisoned or tortured many more. I am for retribution. He should be tried. The people of the world have already found him guilty, this is merely more proof of that. It is undemocratic to defend the imprisonment of men simply for showing the peoples' will.

JM, whether Bush should be tried for war crimes or not, vigilante justice is not the way to do it. And certainly not shoe-gilante. The man who threw the shoe does not represent the international justice system, or the Iraqi people. Its not even like there was a shoe throwing conspiracy, as awesome as that would be. Him throwing his shoe does not represent the Iraqi people throwing a shoe, or the international justice system throwing a shoe. It represents one very angry person venting his anger in entirely the wrong fashion.

Actions can not be taken on a case by case basis. Vigilante punishment, even shoeing, is not acceptable, even if the guy REALLY REALLY deserves it. The important thing to remember is that laws are there not only to punish the guilty, but to ensure the innocent are not punished. This is why there are courts in the first place, so we don't go around shooting (or shoeing, as the case may be) people just because we're angry with them. However justified it may be.

If he had been empowered by the proper authorities to throw a shoe, however, I would be all for it. And a great bit more. Maybe throwing something smaller, and more bullet shaped. At a very high velocity.

He would be allowed to use a specially designed device for that, though.

The fact is, if the system works against the principles on which it was founded, and put in place to protect... such a system cannot be relied apon to fix it.
