Ok, on October 29th, my husband and I are going to be attending Video Games Live in Vancouver BC Canada. http://www.videogameslive.com for those who aren't in the know.

Now I was stupid, incredibly STUPID and bought a nice fancy little black dress *a 1940's cocktail dress to be precise* before looking at the "Testimonial" Videos on the videogames live website.

Now I think I'll be horribly horribly overdressed.

Advice: Should I go looking like the slobs I saw in the video, despite it being a full on Symphony Orchestra presentation. (I guess it's supposed to appeal to the unwashed masses of video game nerds who managed to just dust off the Dorito crumbs from their favorite Halo shirt before arriving from the looks of the testimonial video)

or

Should I dress up in my classy little black dress, do my hair up and if some 300lb greasy Master Chief Cosplaying twat comes up to me and makes a snarky comment, I can just lie and say I'm cosplaying a Rapture survivor and if they would kindly leave me alone (Geek points for using the super control phrase I guess)

Totally lost. Other than showing up naked and telling everyone to suck yours, what would you guys do?

I wouldn't go to a video game thingy and instead have glamorous night out in town, but that's just me. Ask your husband, not us.

Do your own thing. Who cares if you're dressed up more than the others, make it a special thing with you and your husband. If somebody is snarky at you, you can take solace in the fact that you are having sex and they will not unless it's with some pimply-faced self-diagnosed Asperger Syndrome sufferer.

I just think that changing the way you want to dress because of how everyone else is dressed is stupid unless you're wearing ripped jeans to a cocktail party.

Tempting to, but he's of the mindset of "Wear the fucking dress you spent sixty fucking dollars on the damn thing, you're gonna wear it at least once"

Yeah..this is coming from a man who spends at least $60 a hit on video games that he never plays in favor of City of Villains.

Such are the subtle differences between men and women - didn't you get that briefing before the wedding? Ah well, anyways... since that's his mindset, you're free to act as an individual, which effectively means that you'll do what I suggest.

So just save it for some other time. He'll probably pay more attention to the whole gig than to you, which is a crime in itself but it can't be helped. Then wear it to some other nice event or candlelight dinner and make sure that he sees just what he's investing in.

Once that's accomplished, winning all the fights about whether to buy the next best first person shooter that he desires so much or the family friendly game which will please both of you will become ever so much easier.

I would go in the dress, tbh. To hell with the slobs.

I'm willing to put money on you not being the only well-dressed person there. Do what makes you feel good. Or pretty. Or both.

Wear the dress.

Totally go for the dress. No such thing as 'overdressed'.

Although I do think you were a little naive by assuming orchestra = posh. One glance at the homepage makes it look like a rave.

Have a good time.

I'd wear the dress if it meant getting to see Video Games Live.

http://www.videogame...dex.php?s=dates

If you fancy a drive you can hit the one in Paris

Oh look they're going to somewhere in Australia in 09 (probably the Sydney Opera house), wonder if Yahtzee will go *And do a review*

*waits with baited breath*

Of course I'm very very afraid to run into people like this: http://videogamesliv...x.php?s=costume

Seriously.

Who the hell would dress up like Fagballs anyway?

Just a short drive over the sea.

On a serious note though, I'm sure they'll tour the UK at some stage.

you *Just* missed two London showings.

Real stupid ignorant North American Question here: But about the train going thru the Channel tunnel: Does it have Car carriers?

But that would be so bloody expensive I bet. Hell we're already paying $160 for a round trip ferry (We have to cross water to see our VGL since Victoria isn't good enough for them I guess)

Yeah they'll be back to the UK. I think it's one of their regular stops to be honest.

Anyway for those (who even give a fuck) want to see the dress: it's http://cgi.ebay.ca/w...em=160292706102 right there.

It does indeed. The Eurostar takes people from Dover to Calais (and back, I hear) quite often.

London's still a 3 1/2 hour journey in the car from North Wales though; looks like I'll have to wait for them to do Manchester or Liverpool.

Also, my girlfriend says that the dress is nice, thus I agree.

$160... That's about £80, the price of a return trip to London on the train.

So that train, is kind of like a ferry boat, you drive on the platform thingie and sit in your car till you get there? wild.

With the cost of gas the way it is I wouldn't blame you not wanting to drive that far. We've been saving up for months for this trip. Ferry, gas, hotel, babysitting fees so we don't have to bring our two nosepickers with us. (Love the two dears like crazy but really, mom and dad need a BREAK)

by the way is pot noodle really that gross?

Personally, I'd go in the dress. Looking nice is always great, whether practical or not. Also, you get brownie points from me for the style of dress. Just having one of those must be awesome. Also, don't say you're cosplaying from Rapture. Say you got lost after a wild party with a man calling himself "The Doctor" and now everything just seems so strange.
Tiredness can kill! Have a break, have a Kit-Kat.

Nah, it's a train that goes under the sea in a big tunnel.

Pot Noodle is... an acquired taste. Red Dwarf fan, by any chance?

Me and the girlfriend really like them, but you wouldn't exactly call them 'real' food. I bet you have and equivalent over the Atlantic - it's just dehydrated noodles and veg in a sauce, in a plastic pot that's ready in two minutes.
