So as far as I can tell, the Australian government is putting a nationwide, all-encompassing set of filters on internet content. I don't know the specifics , but does this seem like a huge breach of freedom of speech? I mean, the sort of thing China does, not a first world country? Someone enlighten me here, because I didn't think things were that bad Down Under.

Basically, the government wanted to jump on a bandwagon. But there were no spaces left, so they just went even more extreme. Than the extremists in other countries.

the problem is that governments lack imagination. They'll be sure to censor some of the more tame things online, but I'm relatively certain that really weird shit will still get through just because they'd never think of it in their conservative little dreams.

I can see this lasting maybe two months until anatomy class projects start coming in late and people start getting seriously pissed off because its blocking regular websites too. It works in China because their response to complaints is generally murder, but I don't know if Australia can implement the same system.

Nice to see the Australian government has informed it's citizens it's going Hu Jintao on their asses. Come on for a supposedly free western nation this is completely outrageous! In Britain we tend to put up with a lot of shit that would have other people protesting, but if they tried to do this here there would be riots.

So this baby, while still inside its mother, murdered his twin brother and STOLE HIS PENIS.

I don't know, I think Britain is a better country for protests than the US. I still respect you limeys for erecting that statue of George Bush and then tearing it apart in protest.

Welcome to Fascism Central. It's abit fucked up that 70 years ago, we were fighting against these kind of measures, and now we are actually putting them into action.

The new Australian Gamer podcast talks about this at length. I get the impression that Matt and Yug could well become some sort of figureheads for protesting against all this bullshit, they were both particularly vocal about it.

Seriously though, the Australian classification people need to take a long hard look at themselves before they can consider themselves as being part of 'The Free World', and the way that things have been hushed up by members of the Australian government is practically fucking Orwellian.

"I felt insulted until I realized that the people trying to mock me were the same intellectual titans who claimed that people would be thrown out of skyscrapers and feudalism would be re-institutionalized if service cartels don't keep getting political favors and regulations are cut down to only a few thousand pages worth, that being able to take a walk in the park is worth driving your nation's economy into the ground, that sexual orientation is a choice that can be changed at a whim, that problems caused by having institutions can be solved by introducing more institutions or strengthening the existing ones that are causing the problems, and many more profound pearls of wisdom. I no longer feel insulted because I now feel grateful for being alive and witnessing such deep conclusions from my fellows."

Australia sucks so much ass right now.

Any fans of Fallout, good music, scripted television, porn, and Belgium trappist beer will agree.
