I agree wholeheartedly with Yahtzee's assessment of retro gaming. The OP mentioned Sonic 2 as some kind of exception to said rule, however the Sonic series of old is really no better than the garbage new-age Sonic games are. While the newer games are plagued with mechanical issues and huge level design flaws, older Sonic games were criminally simplistic, even for their time, and can be summed up thusly: "run forward until you hit a wall, hit A, B, or C, and run some more." It's fun in a guilty sort of way, but not exactly an engaging video game experience.

The issue in my opinion is more prevalent in JRPGs, where older ones had less production issues to deal with and play less like interactive anime and more like actual video games. Voice acting, for instance, should really go the way of the dinosaur so that I don't have to deal with all of these awkward translation problems (for instance, "ne" becoming "you know?" at the end of every sentence) and cheap, bad, SAG-dodging voice actors.

I disagree with incredible intensity that the old Sonic games are as bad as the new ones.
Whilst yes, incredibly simple, this allows you to focus on going damn fast and enjoying it. Level design was never as simple as holding forward and jumping occasionally, I'd like you to try and actually play the game in this fashion and see how far you get.
Sonic was never about deep gameplay, it was about great level design and high speed stylish action.

And I don't have a problem with voice acting. In fact, in everything other than RPG's, it's usually very good.

EDIT: I mean it's good to have these days. Not that either it's good quality or that it has always been good. We don't need any more masters of unlocking in this world.

Everyone knows Jill is the master of unlocking, you can't beat her.

Although, considering she's such a 'master', you'd think she'd carry a lockpick of her own... Unless she's normally so good she does it with her mind, a power that's been disrupted by the fear and confusion caused by being in the Umbrella Mansion?

Jesus, I've thought about that too much. But seriously, That bit of script is so bad, Barry may as well have said "Jill, it may be handy if you, the easier playthrough, takes this item and skips a load of fucking to-and-fro-ing for bastard fucking keys. Also, even though a big deal has been made about you being physically weaker than Chris, you sure can carry a fuckload of explosives".

I remember the old Sonic games punishing you for just pushing forward and screaming blindly towards the goal - the Casino Nights zone being a complete and utter motherfucker in places.

Voice acting... Well, if it's done well, go for it. Broken Sword, for example, is beautifully voice acted. Monkey Island 3 is another.

Sure you can. Sword/Shield/Armor Keys and their respective locks. Never understood that...

Meanwhile, VA is still evolving in games and media. Considering the pool of VAs that get active work regularly (cause they... don't suck I guess) is very small, new talent rotating in that's good is somewhat a hot commodity. Don't worry, it's getting better here in the English speaking world.

Yeah you did still have to dick around the entire mansion looking for keys. For a lockpick, it sure didn't work on as many locks as you'd think.
I remember loving Resident Evil back when I first got it, but the last time I remember sitting down to play, I hated every second of it. I think the stationary cameras just get to me too much anymore. It's more likely that I only enjoyed it because, well...not that many games at the time did horror well.

The DS port was nearly the same as the PS release. It was nostalgic picking that up and playing it again. It even added in some touchscreen activities (which you could turn off and go Classic).

Ah nostalgia... back to that again. I'm curious how the Wiimake Resident Evil Remake will come out. I really enjoyed RE4 because of it's control setup. As much as I enjoyed the other RE games, the turning/running schema was obnoxious.

The Wiimake REmake is exactly the same as the Gamecube REmake. So if we want more Resident Evil 4 style play it's a long wait 'til RE 5.
