What, people haven't realized this until now? I've been calling this out since Monsters Inc.

All it proves to me is how insignificant plot is in determining a good movie.

Nah, someone just finally got the urge to make a topic about it.

Well if you have something that has made you MILLIONS of dollars why would you risk changing the recipe for success? Nah, much better you tweak it just enough to make people believe it's something different and then sell it all over again, it's capitalism 101 people.

Generally true but not always. The bigger risks have bigger payouts. It just depends on if you wanna make some real profit or just have a steady income. Conservative business planning just sucks...

This whole plot thing is pretty much why I watch anime.

They start with weird plots to begin with, they're already shunned by most people, they are more or less, cartoons aimed at an adult audience. Therefore, they have no reason to fear experimentation. Yes, there are bad examples of formulaic anime, so please don't mention naruto or death note here, they're just cartoons. Aimed at kids.

The fringes of anime tend to include new ideas, even with horrible production values, to such the extent that you have different types of predictable anime, despite how small the genre is. Harem, dystopic, treacherous, mech, quest, fantasy, space opera . . . all of which have their own unique variants for anime, and some of which exist only in anime.

But I'm too much of a snot to even watch those, I go even further into the fringes of anime, where such things as Cat Soup, Battle Programmer Shirase, Bus Gamer, DTB, Furi Kuri, and such exist.
They often contain anime clichés, but the plots aren't part of them.
Where the heck would I find stuff like that outside of Anime/manga?

WOAH WOAH hey less hating on Death Note please! I too was sceptical at first but after having watched it, it just blew me away.

I'll agree about Naruto though.

And Bleach.

And FlCl.

And most of it.

woulda worked too if it wasn't for you meddling kids!

Seriously though, regarding FlCl, recall that it was made long before most of today's anime, and back then it was somewhat original. Now other animes have borrowed from it, and now it's just hilarious with a good soundtrack. Don't tell me that two people hitting a giant baseball into space with guitars to the sound of a song named "hybrid rainbow" didn't make you laugh. The manga's a lot darker, and better in my opinion, but it lacks the soundtrack.

As for death note . . . read the manga, found so many holes in the plot, in the logic, so many inconsistencies and stupidities for the sake of drama, I was just turned off by it. The anime is even worse. The live-action movie . . . is just horrible, and that's before I even consider the ear-breaking english dubs.

Have you watched cat soup? If not, then watch it. Trust me on this one.

Bah, eight years ago was anything but "long before today's anime", there hasn't been much of a change since then. Broaden your horizon a bit and check up on Lupin III first, then work your way through the seventies till the early nineties and end up realizing that said "originality" was always there, sometimes less and sometimes more obvious. Don't come back until you do.

Ah, Lupin! Classic french-inspired anime, right down to the drawing style!

And eights years ago was an entire different era in anime compared to now.
As was eight years before that, and eight years before that. The different explosions in popularity have changed anime a great deal.

What I meant is that the elements of FlCl that are original are now hackneyed in modern anime.
