In case this hasn't been posted before, a fellow named Daniel Floyd created some Zero Punctuation-inspired videos for an art history class that go into some different aspects of the video game industry, some of which Yahtzee has touched on in his videos.

I think they're somewhat amusing and worth a watch:

First thoughts:

Thank fucking Christ, someone's got it right. Finally, someone's got the idea that not everyone can "do" ZP. What this guy's done is taken the basic idea of ZP, but:

  • NOT aped (or stolen) YZ's graphics
  • NOT spoken so quickly so that the entire thing is inaudible and muffled
  • NOT attempted to copy YZ's style of humour
  • ACTUALLY been interesting and worth ten minutes of watching.

In fact, I think I learned a few bits and bobs watching these, and I consider myself pretty up to date with gaming, the whole 'game as art' argument, and so forth. So, well done.

On the other hand, his voice can become a little annoying. But, it could be a lot worse. AVGN, I'm looking at you.

Yeah, I agree, I hate when they try to mimic the ZP-style "talking fast". I've yet to see anyone beside Yahtzee who can do it and still remain:

1. Tolerable.
2. Comprehensible.

Started watching the first one. He immediately gets points for using CarboHydroM's music =)

After watching all 3, I have to concede these are the best of the ZP-inspired videos I've seen. I agree with the previous points about taking the style and making it his own, and being coherent and clearly audible.

He also makes excellent points in his videos, without being preachy.

This guy's thought a nice bit about his topic.

I'm going to e-mail him and ask him a few questions.

I seem to notice that the (what we'll call) best ZP clones are ones that are being marked for uni. I've only watched the first one there, but I did like it. Only thing is, it went on a bit long for my short attention span, but that's fair enough, since he was doing it to be marked, and not to amuse the squeaking goblins YZ has to suffer.

If anyone's interested:

This guy's 'Ranting Monkey' videos are good. Same sorta thing:- used ZP as a base, but modifies it into his own style. Not great, but a damn sight better than alot of the squeaky teens on YouTube attempting 'humour'.
