English, mother fuckers. DO YOU SPEAK IT?
"I felt insulted until I realized that the people trying to mock me were the same intellectual titans who claimed that people would be thrown out of skyscrapers and feudalism would be re-institutionalized if service cartels don't keep getting political favors and regulations are cut down to only a few thousand pages worth, that being able to take a walk in the park is worth driving your nation's economy into the ground, that sexual orientation is a choice that can be changed at a whim, that problems caused by having institutions can be solved by introducing more institutions or strengthening the existing ones that are causing the problems, and many more profound pearls of wisdom. I no longer feel insulted because I now feel grateful for being alive and witnessing such deep conclusions from my fellows."
-Jimmy McTavern, 1938.

What?

No seriously, FFreak3 is onto something with the Buddist stuff. I know very little, but I remember being taught by my sensei once that back in those days killing someone was a favour, as they had a belief that this life was torture.

My memories a little shady as it was a couple of years ago, but it had to do with the ancient parts of the religion. Isn't there also a things to do with giving up your lifes pleasures? Maybe I have my wires crossed.

I think what you're speaking of now is Mappou Buddhism, and from what I gather, it's mostly a Japan-specific branch of Buddhism. It originated from all those calamities and disasters that occurred in the middle ages, and the general attitude must have been the medieval Japanese equivalent of "Why the fuck bother?". Thus, there was not much killing to do each other favours, the fires/earthquakes/epidemics took care of that shit quite efficiently. See the Houjouki for reference (My Ten-foot Hut I think it's called in English), it describes the religion and the people of those fucked up days quite well I think.

That's not why you kill him! You kill him because you need to attain enlightenment on your own. Not by asking someone else.

That's wrong. If Buddha was to walk the earth, then he would not have achieved enlightenment. And you would help both of you achieve enlightenment by killing him.

I'm sure both of you will have a fun time reading up on Buddha and the concept of a Bodhisattva, before you make my head hurt even more.

I was thought that you killed Buddha if you saw him, because he would have to be a false Buddha.

I thought that if you saw Buddha you were supposed to rub his belly for luck.

But I'm an ignorant atheist.

I haven't yet mentioned how wikipedia follows only one sect of buddha, (the one that has become popular and common in western culture).
Now I have.

While not in-correct, it doesn't represent the buddhist way-of-life/religion, (whichever you prefer to call it), as a whole. Or rather, all the buddhist ways of life, since they are arguably different religions, (certainly there's a greater difference than between Christianity and Islam).
Wikipedia follows a sect which insists that enlightenment is reached during life, (or, at least, that a man who was then given the title Buddha did).
Most sects believe that enlightenment is seen or discovered during life, and then reached upon death, (that is, that enlightenment is simply too hard for any living creature to understand or explain, and only in the period between incarnations can the entity understand what it has seen during its lives enough to ascend).

Much like Christianity no longer resembles the old testament, that type of Buddhism no longer follows the original texts. But they had enough old texts to choose from to match their changing beliefs while maintaining authority and agreeing with the text. Much like some denominations of Christianity.
I merely prefer to study as many different Buddhist texts as possible.

Dear sweet merciful Eris... As much as it pains me to say this, I have to agree with you, Battlefrank, on all accounts. But if you want moderation, you're going to have to complain to the mods in PMs, and then we'll have to play "Who wants to take care of the building in the corner that's always on fire and leaking toxic waste that we pretend doesn't exist?" and see who gets the short straw. tongue.gif

Hahaha! The funniest thing is that's how the firefighters in Bucharest actually work!

PS: Hmm, inappropriate cynical ranting... Yep, time to go to sleep...

We need some sort of authority in here, seriously.

Frank's bearable, as in between the homoerotic Transformers pictures he occasionally contributes to the conversation and plays nice.

Possibly even make one of the regulars in here a mod, just for this forum.
