Grand Auto Theft EX is a little known game developed by ATLUS in 2000 as an attempt to cash in on the Grand Theft Auto series, this game was never released outside of Japan for obvious reasons. DMA Designs (Now Rockstar North) got wind of the game close to launch and almost slew the game. It got a limited Japanese release and even then, sold badly. Unlike the Grand Theft Auto series, this game had more of a roleplaying bent to it, feeling in many ways more like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout or Arcanum in an Urban setting. Japanes gamers didn't bite and it fell into obscurity.

Thanks to the power of the internet and a couple of friends in Japan, I got my hands on a copy of the game and a fantranslation. The game is, absolutely amazing, although very unstable. The game offers amazing freedom, letting you choose your nationality from almost everything from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, for some reason the United States are not listed, but Canada is. The nationality you pick is mostly cosmetic, even though it can open up or close some class choices.
The classes seem to work a lot more like origins, sometimes they boost your skills, change your beginning cash, give you extra attributes (or take some away) and often give you special powers and/or reactions from NPCs. The class can also change your status with the factions of the game (seems mostly with the four factions in the first area, Ballard) though your nationality can also affect those.
You can choose your colour scheme, which you can change at any time in the game. This is also, only cosmetic.

We are going to be playing this game, so help me out, regarding our character. We'll begin with nationality and class.
I should probably just give you a dump of the different classes and skills, even though we won't be getting to the skills after we distribute the attribute points.

While things pick up, I'll info dump some more, this time we'll be looking at the character screen.

Nation: Your nationality, as I said before, it's mostly cosmetic, but it plays a role into your language skill and your relationships with race/nationality specific organizations and/or individuals. Let's say you're an italian, you'll get a boost with the Mafia, but most other organizations will be skeptical of you, also no interpersonal bonuses. Let's say you pick something rarer, like Switzerland and if by any chance of luck you'll stumble upon a banker or a fellow Swiss (is that the right term) the bonus is massive without any kind of drawbacks. The game does a pretty good job at mapping out language roots and such for the sakes of this skill. (That this comes into play is pretty bitching)

Class: Already covered this more or less, as I said, determines a lot of stuff, each grants you a set of advantages and disadvantages. Like, my Mexican class gives me a big penalty on language, but the extra boost amongst the other Mexicans makes up for it. It lets you recruit a perro at any time who don't count against your party/gang limit. They're pretty cheap too.

eXperiencePoints: This goes up after successful actions, missions and fights. The biggest boosts come from working on jobs, but we'll get more into those when we finish rolling up the character smile.gif The more the experience points go up, the quicker you gain levels. For some reason the character screen doesn't show the Level gauge, but the in game screen does (I'll try to put one up soon!) The higher the level, the more traits you can get and skills and such.

The Attributes: Most attributes have some form of synergy going on, so while a skill may have a primary skill to draw bonuses from, other skills and attributes can aid as well.

STRength: How tough you are. Strength determines melee combat and hit points. Important if you plan on getting hit a lot.

SPeeD: How quick you are. Boosts your movement speed in game and helps with combat, reflexes and sneakier skills.

STyLe: How well put together are you? Also: Beauty. This mostly acts as a way to gain initial relationship boosts, though it can also aid in getting certain jobs, getting into clubs and other surface level reliant things.

MOXy: Raw determination. It's the mental equivalent of strength. Affects your hit points, social skills and most of the non-combat skills in small ways.

BRaiNs: How smart are you? Be it street or book smart. This affects most of the more cranial matters. This affects the game in many subtle ways. Half your intellect gets added to the amount of skill points you gain on level up.

CHArms: How good are you with that tongue of yours? Even if you haven't invested in any social skills a high charms score can keep you going. It obviously affects most of your social skills.

Traits: Special abilities and feats that you gain at creation or as you level up. They either affect gameplay, or give you boosts. Some, especially those with the bigger bonuses, take a little something away as well.

Groups: Shows your standings with the different factions you've met.

Missions: Active and completed missions.

Map: Shows a more detailed map of the city. When you start the game, you only have access to San Vanidad South Beach.

I hope this helped smile.gif

Freeware?
"I felt insulted until I realized that the people trying to mock me were the same intellectual titans who claimed that people would be thrown out of skyscrapers and feudalism would be re-institutionalized if service cartels don't keep getting political favors and regulations are cut down to only a few thousand pages worth, that being able to take a walk in the park is worth driving your nation's economy into the ground, that sexual orientation is a choice that can be changed at a whim, that problems caused by having institutions can be solved by introducing more institutions or strengthening the existing ones that are causing the problems, and many more profound pearls of wisdom. I no longer feel insulted because I now feel grateful for being alive and witnessing such deep conclusions from my fellows."

Freeware?

It would probably count as abandonware today, seeing as it has been abandoned by everyone.

Well there isn't anything in the (chefelf.com) rules about abandonware so upload the game and share!

I'd rather not take the chance on it, seeing as how Rockstar North doesn't want this game to exist (Copyright Infringement) you can try to find a torrent for it, or track it down at a Japanese thrift store like I had my friends do.

I'm gonna look into some hosting though.

While you wait, pick a nationality and class smile.gif
