I sort of watched the last bit of Buffy back in the days, half-heartedly for the jokes, I think. Angel was just gay and Firefly... there's a reason for why it flopped, definitely. Never seen Serenity.

Jossy has lots of weak points, but so do most people.

Excluding that Colonel Ratzinger - I just reviewed his speech in Lourdes, and boy, does he know what stand up comedy is about!

To be fair, I've only seen the first season of Buffy and a few episodes here and there of the later episodes (and none of Angel). The only thing I've heard about the later seasons is that Willow suddenly goes from being attracted to guys to being a lesbian, with no explanation given for her not liking guys anymore? I don't know if that's really good character development.
But also, the dialogue between the characters (from what I've seen) is really bad and unrealistic. Ugh.

On the other hand, I've never met anyone who didn't like Firefly (except for Gobbler now maybe?). I was under the impression it was canceled because the network never aired the first episode, and also because it took the place of Family Guy so all the Family Guy demon fans wanted it back. I could be wrong, I wasn't really aware of this at the time it happened.

But as far as writing goes, Firefly was solid. A believable universe, compelling characters, an idiosyncratic dialect but the actors were so wonderful that they pulled it off, and a great flowing overall storyline along with nicely-placed side story adventures. Even with its faults (it had a couple) it was far, far better than 90% of the shit I see on television.

That's incorrect. The pilot was aired last and the other episodes were shown out of order, with the final two of the season never appearing except for on the DVDs.

Yes, Gobbler, there was a reason it was cancelled, but if that reason was that the show had no fans it was rectified by the time the demand for a movie came around -- the only reason it was made was because of the fan outcry.

I don't claim to be a Joss fan at all, but Firefly was great fun and Dr. Horrible was a good time as well. I'll never understand the love for Buffy or Angel.

"sort of watched the last bit of Buffy back in the days, half-heartedly for the jokes, I think. Angel was just gay and Firefly... there's a reason for why it flopped, definitely. Never seen Serenity."

its not good criticism calling any show "gay" what was really wrong with it? was it really a whole bunch of guys or girls having sex with one another?

I haven't liked anything Whedon has touched, including Firefly. That makes at least two people now, Poplopo.

Just to not hand myself out as troll bait, I never have liked Whedon's writing, finding even the shortest clips of Buffy to reveal a complete lack of anything I can appreciate as talent. I haven't even heard Yahtzee's latest outburst yet . . .

Make that a definitely.

I stopped watching after the first three episodes, it was dull, boring, the characters weren't really surprising at all, the actors were shitty, the whole show was made very cheaply and don't even try to argue that there was something interesting going on in the background of each episode to justify sticking around in order to watch the characters develop.

I was merely stating my opinion. The show only warmed up some of Buffy's characters, gave them a weak setting and another weak storyline to push through somehow. Angel was always trying to be the sad.gif-faced tough guy with a big heart that defies his nature (ohhh, character depth, yay!) and his sidekicks were Mr. "Let's forget I ever wasted money on that drama class" and Mrs. "I'm only here to stick those boobs into everyone's face". It might have had an appeal on the "I'm just watching it all casually like" level, but nothing more than that.

Hmm. This forum is really interesting. It's not so easy to actually talk about things, because somehow everyone here a) thinks he is funny or cool.gif is funny. And so every thread I saw so far turns into lunacy.

We can happily let this thread die, as it's not really going anywhere. Sorry, I was lured to open a thread after listening to that podcast.

Taste cannot really be discussed. I think from my perspective as a some kind of writer or creative producer of sorts, 2 or possibly 3 seasons of Buffy (Somewhere between 3 and 5 1/2 or so), when watched as one epic story, feels very well done. Me and my friends convinced a few other (very Anti-Buffy) friends by shock therapy, and afterwards they were totally hooked. I think for a rather modern series the character development is very deep and well-done.

I think you have to compare this to other serieseses. Where is the standard.

I know how Buffy looks if you have seen only season 1, or a few episodes here and there. I hated Buffy back then. There are a few key episodes who convinced everyone I tried them on (tried this like 3 or 4 times) and created some heavy fans.

I know that the series ended in a meh, season 7 is quite average.

At the same time I admit that the criticism is valid (though it does not spoil my fun).

And I admit that Angel sucks by definiton, because 3 generally rather disliked characters were taken from Buffy to form their own series. (oh dear)

But, as I am told, Angel turns good as soon as Joss joined te team (Season 5 especially, which is supposed to be one long story over all episodes with a lot of twists and so on). I still have to watch it, the DVDs are waiting next to my TV.

Sorry that my posts are so long. smile.gif

This was the final proof I needed to confirm you're German.

I know that was supposed to be a joke, but seriously, don't you ever try to push your favourite series into the face of your friends and hope it will stick? Like Zero Punctuation, have you never forced anyone to watch it? I did at work, and my colleagues loved it (although most of them aren't gamers).

In Germany, EVERYONE seems to hate Buffy. That is because the dubbing in German TV of Buffy is so extremely horrible, every character is translated and voiced with a totally different feeling and emotion. Not only how they speak, but look at this:

English version Giles: "Bay City Rollers. Now, that's music."
German version: "Mozart & Beethoven, now that's music." Totally different meaning!? And that particular character talks like a detached arrogant butler (Germany's interpretation of a British accent).

I mean, everyone here loves 24 but thinks Buffy sucks. So I took 3 or 4 friends, and (on different nights) watched some key english episodes with them. All changed their mind, some even bought all seasons on DVD. That's what I meant.

Sorry I am keeping this thread going with too long posts, although there isn't actually any potential for discussion here. *sits down and shuts up*

Can't say I have, no, I usually just try to rickroll people.

While there's no doubt about you being right about the dubbing, there's a more simple truth regarding why nobody likes Buffy:
It's an old series, they concluded it a few years ago, kids these days are into even worse storytelling and the kids from those days have grown up by now and wish to forget they ever got that gene which made their eyesockets actually fill with well developed eyes, instead of chocolate.
