Spore, if I recall correctly from my vague awareness of game news, is that high-concept game where you start off as an amoeba and eventually evolve into a race of creatures who form towns and colonise planets. Which would be cool if the whole evolution process was more or less contiguous, but from what I remember it was actually explicitly stated that each stage of the process is just a different minigame. So I feel, like I do with many games, that this game is dressed up as something it's not, and the high-concept isn't very high-concept. Hence "that game looks boring. Man, eff that game." It'll be a load of sandbox flip-flopping rubbish from those visionary philosopher game designer people, I bet.

Once I get back to Blighty from my current location the first game I buy will probably be Clear Sky, which by contrast I think will live up to its hype.

Oh, released early in AUS. How lucky for them.
From what I heard, game is terrible because the target audience is casual gamers, so a lot of promised stuff was taken out, possibly to be put into one of many expansion packs because EA is terrible, etc.

I am disappointed, but still curious, and had good times with the creature creator.

Well in all fairness we can't judge a game that's not out yet. So either A) be excited about the game, cool.gif be pesemistic but don't go for C) Review the game despite not even having played it like Reliabear has.

That's called being gay.

Suddenly, I am a flaming homosexual! GUYS, WHAT DO I DO

Apparently somehow I reviewed the game instead of expressing my skepticism toward the game from what I heard and seen from people who have actually played it!
Game was put out in stores early in AUS, game is leaked, several people have played it already. I could very well have played it as well.

Also, Reliabear! This is new. If all gamers are people who pick fights over nothing and make Chuck Norris jokes, I don't think I want to identify with them at all.

We have plenty of regulars here to have cute little spats all the time, we don't need an influx of new blood doing it too.

*nod*

Anyways, I'm a sorta-excited for it. I'm busy with other games at the moment so I won't be busting down any doors to get it, but the creature creator was fun and I'm one of those folks who enjoys "The Sims", so I have a good feeling about it.

I think it is pretty cool the USA is getting it last for once. It seems pretty fair. wink.gif

Suddenly I feel embarrassed.

My friends are complaining because the shop I'm working at doesn't have Spore yet. I think they should give me a break considering 1) it's two or three different franchises combined to make one big store and 2) It's a computer store, not a game shop.

And 3) of course
Presumably it isn't your shop, and therefore you aren't in control of it's stock.
Therefore they should indeed give you a break.

The trial of Spore came in the Sunday newspaper but I just cbf installing it. The creature creator idea sounded cool but it seemed pointless. Do you get to kill other people's creatures in it?

Yes. You can download specific creatures from the online community, or just play online.

Well, I blitzed the game for a few hours last night (once the server issues were solved - Cheers EA), and I've gotta say, it's alot of fun. True, I'm only at the tribal stage at the moment, but it's been really quite exciting watching my blob with a mouth evolve into a race of complete and utter armour plated murder bastards with tails and spiky things.

As far as all the user created content goes: It's quite cool to have user created creatures grazing or setting up camp, but I can't help but feel as though I'm missing something.

In conclusion: Worth the hype, if just for the gameplay and polish of the game.

Now I'm off to buy TF2.

I have to admit, it is pretty much what I was expecting.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I played around with Spore Creature Creator and was a bit irritated at the limitations. I was hoping for a more customizable creature, but I could only figure out how to make symmetrical vertebrates.

Also, the mere existence of Sporn really dampers my opinion of it. D:

So far I'm only at the creature stage (yes, I play slowly. I can't stay focussed or interested in most games for more than a couple of hours at a time. Unless it's MGS) but I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I have a carnivore and an omnivore at the moment, and it's quite fun to run around with the carnivore, eating everything in my path and watching the sheer terror on other creatures' faces as I come near =)
