Just listen to Josh.
He's right.

I know I'm mental because right up until that point I was nodding with Josh's comments.
What I mean is, he's not 100% right. His approach, in theory, is nice, but it becomes a bit more complex then that, unless everyone abides by the same rule.

It doesn't matter if you're nice to everyone because when you get down to it some people are just jerks. And somehow these jerks always seem to get friends. Now their friends may be fine, completely normal people you get along with well, but regardless of that the one person will be a jerk and no amount of being nice can change their opinion of you. At that point it's best to distance yourself from them at all times.

Others times people can react differently in different situations, jealousy and such can become more serious when alcohol is introduced and the whole system begins to fracture as everything starts to go wrong.

I don't recall saying even a single time that you should never ever distance yourself from your enemies, nor did I say to let them trample all over you. Disagreements are natural and if they can't be negotiated then you obviously shouldn't hang around that person, but until you are positive that you won't have to see them again you shouldn't act just like the douche who is being a douche. Disagree wholeheartedly and politely.

Save your wrath for when it's really absolutely necessary.

Look, I'm not your mother. The thread title isn't "You are amoral people and Josh is going to instruct you on how to be less of a heathen". Use common sense, dagnabbit. I still say that cooler heads prevail, even when being directly insulted. Besides, if someone calling you names really gets your panties in a bunch you need to:

1. Stop hanging around 5th graders (or at least people with a 5th grade mentality).

2. Grow up a little and be comfortable in the fact that you don't need to sink to that level.

(for josh, because I want to make sure he gets it, is not justifying your beliefs without any regard to other's logic or problems with said beliefs, in fact, not performing the golden rule, and is it not, in fact, getting your panties in a bunch?)

Yeah, you get used to that.

Your simile fails like a failed simile.

How exactly is explaining how being a nice person in most situations "not treating others how I want to be treated"? There is no irony here because I'm not forcing or pressuring anybody into doing anything. My goal here is to show how showing a little restraint sometimes can lead to fewer flame wars. I'm well aware what the chances of that idea catching on are.

EDIT: As to this being off-topic, that's a trap. If I refused to discuss this further, I'd be accused of being unable to defend the idea. If I keep discussing it, I'm being off-topic. Trap.

Oh god, I wish. These guys are in their final year of schooling.
I could give you an example if you really cared, but I doubt you do.

Man, I like this. We went from 'annoying noobs on youtube' to the complexity of human relationship and now we're borderlining the appropriate use of similies and the consideration of the beliefs of one human being and whether it would stand in an uncontrolled environment.
Nice.

Why, I'm the perfect gentleman here. I have no idea what sort of insinuation you were making about my character personally with this generalization, but I'll have you know I'm deeply, deeply offended, sir.

No, I'm the perfect gentleman here. I have the post history to prove it.

Scientifically speaking, society is an uncontrolled environment. The only problem is trying to get a control to base it off, which will never happen.
