Like that... corpse in a parka in 6DAS. I don't even remember what word he used, or how it related to the story, if at all. Or this one time in TN where he used this big word twice, I don't remember.

OH OH OH I KNOW THIS ONE

Anorak.

I'll say I enjoyed this story more then the last one. And damn, Yahtzee has a thing for those sucker-punch "sad" endings. It fit this time: we are told from the very beginning how the virus kills, so everything was set up. In it's way it's the best sort of ending.

It's a good story, Yahtz does know how to write a mystery in the classic fashion and he has a good grasp of world-building. But I have a hard time getting to like his characters. Everyone's either a sad-sack or purposefully annoying, and things like Mary's cosmic death, given the dreary atmosphere, were just not funny. In fact, Mary wasn't funny.

Still, the piece works well together. Still, for the love of god, I hope someone gets a happy ending someday. Or at least, a not-heartbreaking one.

The two novels have pretty happy endings, as I remember...

If Yahtzee uses words you don't understand it's because you're a septic.

You remember wrong. Fog Juice punches you in the face with the very last sentence, and although it's a somewhat predictable punch in the face, it hurts nonetheless.

Arien is right with "Anorak." The reason the corpse is in one is because it is Lenkman in what is left of the clothes he was wearing when the Tall Man turned him into a puppet.

As for the story, I liked it. The ending caught me off guard but when you look back on the whole piece all the points fall into place well.

Throw in a few more puzzles and it would have made a good point and click.

What I don't get in this story (perhaps I overlooked something important) is why the computer is re-cloning the two protagonists again and again. To keep itself company perhaps?

Because the ship wants to be destroyed, and the only way it can do that is to have a human tell it to self destruct.

Oh yeah, and it can't self-destruct when it doesn't get the instruction for that. I forgot about the part that said that the most senior crewmember had to give the order. I only thought it couldn't go through with it when there were people on board. Cheers, now it fits together.

I liked the story, it felt like a point-and-click adventure game I didn't have to play.

SPOILER:

Ok, just let me feel sure about getting this.

Travis died in comic timing before giving the order to self-destruct.

And then the one-week Battleships marathon begins all over again.

Right?

Nah. Basically, Battleships was all the computer had to try and coerce the crew into activating the self destruct sequence, as it cannot directly tell them to activate it, or do it itself (Asimov's Laws etc). Then, it figures that if Travis got the idea from the drawing and erasing of a likeness of a spaceship, the new Travis clone will get it in less than a week. After all, it's a clone of Travis, so he's bound to think the same way.

Or at least that's how the computer thinks, anyway..
