The Clone Bores have begun...

QUOTE

A pair of episodes will premiere Friday night on Cartoon Network, and the first one is titled Ambush.

In the first Jedi Master Yoda and three clone troopers face off against Count Dooku’s assassin Asajj Ventress and the massive Separatist droid army, trying to prove that the Jedi are strong enough to protect a strategic planet, and thus, help forge a new treaty for the Republic.

In the second episode (titled Rising Malevolence), the clone Starfleet deals with a Separatist mystery weapon in the hands of General Grievous.

Interesting they decided not to use the movie. Guess they realized repeating that would be serial suicide. I can't be bothered watching, but if anyone does, wonder if it'll be as bad as the movie...

"Clone Wars" a new star for Cartoon Network

Cartoon Network's "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" became the channel's most-watched series premiere ever. The computer-animated series, from Lucasfilm Animation, averaged 4 million total viewers in its debut at 9 p.m. Friday, according to Nielsen Media Research.

Wow. Make a crap movie, hated by critics and fans alike. But stick it on TV for free and people watch anyway.

Well, let us see where this goes. Despite the movie, there may still be a novelty factor in play. To get people (and kids) to tune in week after week it's going to have to be at least mildly entertaining. The movie episodes were tedious. I'd be amazed if people could tune in week after week for that.

Did anyone here on ChefElf see it? Were you suddenly a fan again, or was it more Failioni?

You never know. 3D Animation if one doesn't have too stern demands on the finish is probably getting easier to produce with time. And if they just make enough episodes they are bound to get a few of them right now and then.

Clone Wars could become the new Scooby Doo.

i consider myself somewhat of an avid star wars fan like the majority of the lot here, but im sorry.."The Clone Wars" just looks like utter crap to me.

The quality of the animation is subpar. We all know this came from Lucas and we all know what Lucas owns and is capable of (i.e. ILM, Lucasarts, THX, etc)

If I knew the final product would have turned out like this, I would have requested the project be outsourced to Toei Animation Studios.
Peter Brady was by far the ugliest Brady kid on the "Brady Bunch". I mean, they were all pretty ugly, and the fact that the Brady dad wanted to always take the boys out on overnight camping trips just a tad bit too often, gave me the creeps.

For anyone who wants to see it, the TV show is up on YouTube:

Linky

The animation is even worse than I imagined; I've seen better visuals in the cutscenes of Jedi Outcast. As for the acting...sweet Jesus.

Outcast was a great game, but ...yeah, those cutscenes did hurt. But to say that those cutscenes are better than a CGI film by Lucas... ohhh that's an absolute abomination. I'd don't think he'll ever be finished dishonoring himself.

It'd be best if Lucas cut open his stomach and Tartakovsky was his kaishaku.

The droid antics are just appalling. It is impossible to take any situation involving the villains seriously with battle droids frolicking and making stupid remarks in the background. Of course, it doesn't help that Grievous is written to be as campy, over-the-top and incompetent as possible. He now has a moronic Russian accent to go with his other Boris Badenov personality traits. He's a cackling imbecile and has zero believability as a genuine threat to the Republic.

The first two episodes can been seen in full on Cartoon Network's site.

Ding Dong. The Movie is dead. The last 166 cinemas decided $36 a showing wasn't worth the cost of cleaning, and axed it. The total domestic takings of $34,871,515 are very poor for a "Star Wars" movie, but enough so Lucas can afford to never wear the same flannelet shirt twice.

Thanks Commodore. Kudos to CN for be smart enough to release them online.

I watched it. They were better than the movie, but then the movies were truly awful. The first one, Yoda on a 'race' to meet Watoo's King, was pretty standard kiddie fare. This time there was at least an 'emote' scene where Yoda bonds with his Clonetroopers, but they still spend too much time with their helmets on, they look alike with them off and their differences are so superficial it doesn't pass for characterization (e.g. one of them 'likes' weapons. Who would have thought...) No plot, and the conclusion was never in doubt. Ventress predictably escapes in a dumb way.

The second one was Skyguy and Snips rescuing that cane toad Jedi and his clonetroopers. Similar 'emote' scene, but same problems. The whole 'Skyguy' and 'Snips' bickering is annoying. The violence is pretty weird: The brown noser at WIRED claims it's a kids thing, but then we have a scene where Roger-roger droids smash a window of pleading uniformed clones trapped in an escape capsule, sucking them into space. Creepy, sure, but kids stuff? Unlike the first one, there was a bit of suspense.

In all though, standard kiddie fare. Despite Filoni's claim to be inspired by anime, these things simply lack the of quality. The stories are too simple to suck adults or even older kids in - And heck even kiddie anime has decent stories. We all know how this ends anyway, so the end is in doubt and still hard to emote a clone/roger-roger droid. Greivous isn't the cool dude he was in the Tartovsky cartoons - It's Prequel Greivous instead. The comedy isn't funny. I didn't laugh once.

I watch some anime, but I don't watch American kids cartoons, so maybe someone with kids can position it better. I presume they had the brains to look around and premiere with two of the better episodes, given the drivel that was the movie. Adults will lose interest, but if they can keep to this 'standard' and the ratings remain high, the series will survive. Despite what he says, Lucas didn't go for a "tune in next week" ending. The stories are completely disconnected. There is no story arc here. Disappointing too, because the whole CGI series should have been awesome.

Question now: Are these the best episodes they could come up with?

Watched the first three. Formulaic which was to be expected. They seem to rely more on recognizable star wars ships, star wars one liners and typical star wars events rather than trying to make a story. Still if that catches on they should aquire a steady audience who knows what to expect and gets it.

For myself I could have wished that the heroes were a little more accessible to us. Anakin is strangely impassive with few facial expressions beyond a continuous scowl. The Jedi are faceless, the clones are similar and the droids are droids. Tartakovsky managed better with his 2D versions. He almost made Clone Wars interesting.

I'm just amazed by how bland the voice acting is. There's no connection between the characters at all; the lines seem like they're being delivered in a vacuum, with no relation at all to what was said before or what is going to be said. Ahsoka is annoying and pointless, a blatant attempt to appeal to the Bratz market. Anakin has about as much life as a week old cadaver, both in voice acting and his animation.

The atmosphere is ludicrously self-important given the absurdity of the villains and the childishness of the script. Lucas clearly wants to be more 'kid-oriented' with this series, but he just can't let go of the pompous, 'epic' pretentiousness that characterized the Prequels. The result is an idiotic chuckle-fest that fails to connect with the viewer on any level.

And what the hell is the deal with the announcer's voice? If they're trying to get a 'newsreel' feel to the events be depicted, they're failing miserably. The voiceovers are painfully corny and add to the farcical feel of the whole experience.

I was going to mention that too, though it slipped my mind. The announcer (which I assume is something going back to 1930:s Flash Gordon serials or perhaps saturday morning cartoons, though 1960:s batman also comes to mind.) is something we've never heard in Star Wars before (at lest I haven't) and feels unexpected and almost a little unwelcome. Maybe it is one of those things that takes time to get used too. Either way Star Wars is a different beast today from what it was in the eighties.

Come to think of it, wasn't there some other animated series before? I think I remember seeing it a few times when I was a kid, it definitely had Threepio and R2D2 in it, not sure about the other characters though.

Guess they're just trying to provide some stuff for the kiddies.

Yes "Star Wars: Droids" This came out around the time of the Ewoks cartoon... then those crap awefull Ewoks trilogy movies... Star Wars has been bad before, just not on a scale like this.

Holiday Special is to be forgotten but who can forget it when new things today that are made wholly public resemble it?! SW: HS was echoed dangerously in EP III. Chef points it out with the water opera scene, but I smelled it pretty thick in the wookie scene when Yoda left on the pod.

Oh, the horror.

Saw the first 3 episodes as well, (haven't seen the movie). In addition to the questionable announcer voice, the theme music has undergone some kind of mutation as well, for the worse. Then again, using the classic London Symphony Orchestra version would most likely feel out of place.
