Oh Hai, ChefElves. Sorry. I know George Lucas regularly breaks wind and its reported all over the world that it sounded something like 'sttbbbbbbaaaarrrr wwwwarrbbbsssstthhh'. It happens so often I'm finding it hard to tell his old leaks from his new ones.

Well his latest is that he wants to re-release the Star Wars movies... in 3D. Have you ever got the feeling that this guy has run out of ideas? He doesn't go to the bathroom unless HASBRO tells him too.

QUOTE
George Lucas is planning to re-release all six Star Wars films in 3-D.

Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animations, confirmed to Coming Soon yesterday that Lucas will repurpose his sci-fi saga for a new format.

"He isn't going to put a product out, I think, that isn't anything other than first rate," Katzenberg said.

So far, The Nightmare Before Christmas is the only 2-D film to have had a re-release in 3-D, however a new 3-D version of George Romero's zombie classic Dawn Of The Dead is also in the works.

Let me repeat that to you:

QUOTE
He isn't going to put a product out, I think, that isn't anything other than first rate," Katzenberg said.

I'm glad you qualified that, Mr. Katzenberg. smile.gif

There's been worse.

Romero's original Dawn of the Dead...in 3D? Sounds...awesome. Unnecessary, but awesome.

I'm sure GL has dabbled in 3D before... it was a short little film shown at EPCOT Center starring Michael Jackson, called Captain EO. It also had Angelica Huston in it. It was an amusing little show that was 3D with song and dance, and then it was cancelled due to it being severly outdated.

I'm seriously thinking that GL had something to do with it... I could be wrong, maybe I should look into these things more...

So SW in 3D? What is GL doing, stealing ideas from Hannah Montanna?!

The staying power of a franchise is incredible. Once it's firmly cemented, no matter how bad it gets, people still see it. It's like they'll choose mediocre and safe over perhaps hugely better but a risk. I read something... somewhere... that said this was an evolutionary trait. Humans who take lessor risks for a sure thing will usually outsurvive those that take high-risks on an unknown. It's not a bad idea for food, but for choosing movies it's overkill. It explains why queues will still form outside Star Wars movies with names like "Star Wars XXVI: Amy Winehouse marries Darth Vader" or choose movies based on the actors in them.

Yeah, this is what I'm afraid of... This new CW movie... I know one day I'll see it, but it's a shame that the CW cartoons are all now considered non-canon. Well, Lucas got his wish, to make a film without actors.

So, if it helps, sorry I told you lies about some of the events in the CW cartoons, now that they don't matter, I wonder what else I'm lying about in the SW universe. Thanks Lucas! dry.gif

The canon vs. non-canon concept is pretty weird. We know this stuff is made up, but we treat GL as gatekeeper with a telescope to this alternate universe. GL has been hopelessly inconsistent over the years, to the point it's clear he's making it up as he goes. But if GL gets stoned one day and declares "Everyone in the Star Wars Universe now fights in the nude!", do they? Will fanboys be throwing off their clothes at fancons in celebration? Or will they say "GL has clearly lost it?"

I like Tolkein too (but not to fanboy levels). Are the endless number of "lost manuscripts" Christopher Tolkein keeps finding in the attic canon too? Or is he the GL of fantasy?

This reminds me of a very funny skit on MadTv where an actors dresses and sounds just like GL and deems himself a god of his own religion. I'm sure it's on Youtube somewhere. GL likes the fanbase only for the money (power) it gives him, and the canon material is only what he approves. So if fanboys went nude at a fancon because Lucas said "It's canon to EP XXX," then by all means, it is! These kids would be more embarrased to question Lucas rather than run nude in public with "lightsabers" in hand...

I'm thinking these are more canon because of the fact that Tolkein's stories were originaly based on a language system of elvish that he made up, if I've heard correctly. Tolkein had a lot put into "Fellowship" and from what I hear, the Silmarilian is a very good read, full of all kinds of background knowledge that actually corelates with what we have today.

Yes, found it, with the usual Youtube 'This video is no longer available' banner. They should call it Notube.

There's no real law as to what counts as canon and what doesn't, but you're right the "canon" thing is an idea that lets GL retain control and explain away the inconsistencies.

Drooling Fanboy: Tell me in "Jedis on the Dark Moon" subseries, that Lieutenant , he's actually the same one in the Dark Horse "Dagobah Adventures" series?
GL: Uhhhh.... sure....
Drooling Fanboy: I knew it! I knew it! Wait till the boys hear this! (Wanders off to change his Depends™)
GL: Yes! Yes! Quick! Someone call Hasbro and we'll insert a three-second close-up of whoever it is into the next special edition. Yes, this new character was pivotal all along. Yes, I remember now. And the name of this character... What was it?...
Underling: Here is your coffee, my lord.
GL: Ah thankyou. Their name. Yes. Kobayashi. Lieutenant Kobayashi. Big Fat Guy. Walked with a limp. I remember I originally had him playing in a barbershop quartet at the Mos Eisley Cantina, but I had to cut it due to running time. With the miracle of CGI, I can now fix that. Yes, at the Cantina where Han Solo and his copilot Greedo first meet Luke and Ben. I remember it like it was yesterday.

There was a lot of background stuff, but AFAIK that was never intended to see the light of day by virtue of the fact Tolkien Jr didn't start publishing it until after Tolkien Sr died. In my mind nothing Christopher Tolkien "finds" is canon, but then I'm a judgmental bastard. smile.gif

Heh, last time I checked, even Darth Revan wasn't in the starwars.com database, but Darth Malak is. Now how in the world are you going to have a bad guy, no hero, and a few supporting characters to make a story? Who'd the bad guy get killed by? Well we don't know because he doesn't exist!

Thanks Lucas! I guess I was playing KotOR wrong all along!

I... just... wub.gif

The 3-d SW thing doesn't bug me that much. I think that if a movie CAN be made in 3d, then it probably SHOULD.

As far as Canonicity-ness, I guess that GL has the right to pick and choose what parts of the SW universe stay and go. If any of my stories and characters became that huge, I guess I would want to be able to say what happened to them. If I still cared that much. And that's the weirdest thing about this whole business, after all of this time, GL still "cares." It seems like anyone else who is defined by one thing in their lives, would get sick of it after a while.

"The problem is, you're not a kangaroo... that's a bear... and he's in your pants."
"Maybe artists shouldn't talk about their art."
"Well kids, I guess your father isn't a hermaphrodite."
"Izzy! enough with the rabid smootching!!"

I'm getting the feeling that "cares" and "profit making through toys" means pretty much the same thing here.

What's to get sick of so long as more money comes in? Lucas doesn't care about a steady fanbase because there will always be the kids to get into these things after we've all grown up. We've clearly seen that not much amounts to anything anymore in the SW universe, and there's no real reason t hang on to much of it. The movies are made to sell toys, games, value meals, apparell, and lets not forget, back to school sales yield massive profit when Lucas releases these films over the summer.

The video games are alright just to kill some time and listen to the first three CD's of the Deftones while shooting down x-wings and playing as Dark Jedi.

Isn't this old news? He was talking about making the Star Wars movies in 3D in theaters for the 30th anniversary. Then after that came and went (with nothing but showings of the 2004 editions at "Celebration IV," some star wars stamps and R2D2 mailbox covers), he whined that theaters just didn't have the technology to do it properly yet so it was on indefinite hold.

How is he going to have time to spearhead this project when he's supposedly micro-managing this new "Clone Wars" animated series (with the movie premiere out of the way now), AND writing and directing the first season (at least) of the live action series?

What happened to all those "little low budget films that nobody cares about but me"?

George, George, George...

PS: And why haven't people here seen Adywan's "Star Wars Revisited" Fan edit yet? That's several times better than anything Lucas has officially given us in the last decade...

The thing about Tolkien’s work is that the silmarillion is basically a collection of short stories and footnotes woven together because they all fit together. There are a minimum of discrepancies in his world that seem to only amount to the fact that and an elf in the first age and the third shared the name Glorfindel and that the racial identity of Gothmog is completely erroneous (Black Numenorian / Orc / Nazgul) and being named after a Balrog didn't bloody help. Ultimately though, the whole thing's a pretty tight ship and it's only in 'Unfinished Tales' that alternate drafts are supplied. Other than that it's all cannon because he had the foresight to develop a world in point form and fill it in after, unlike Lucas who made it up as he went along and completely lied about his approach. Calling Star Wars episode 4 was such an after thought and the prequels were the ultimate proof with their atrocious lack of regard for established 'facts' within the narrative of the original films.

Awesome, thanks Barend for the clear-up about Tolkien's work.

I'm gonna read Silmarillion one day.
