'Dancing in the Street' by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.

No idea who did the original but this song was covered by so many different artists, it wasn't funny. With the exception of a good team effort by Mick Jagger and David Bowie (which is also very good), this is the only good version.

Voodoo Child (Jimi Hendrix) by Angelique Kidjo.

Angelique Kidjo can do no wrong. She always knows what she's doing.

Actually I was just thinking about covers. And a lot of covers suck because they are made for the wrong reasons.

Here are the rules for covers:

You don't cover a good song, well done unless you can do a really wonderful new interpretation.

You don't make the cover sound the same as the original - that defeats the point.

You don't ruin a classic by doing a really shitty version of it (Madonna, this means YOU!).

The songs you should cover are lesser known songs that had a lot of potential but just weren't given the best performance by the artists who wrote them.

Anthrax-Parasite (KISS)

Anthrax did a ton of great covers:

Bring The Noise
Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath
...
uh... others?

I forgot about "The Thing That Should Not Be", by Primus. What an amazingly fun cover version. They also do awesome covers of "Intruder" by Peter Gabriel, "Have A Cigar" by Pink Floyd, and "Making Plans For Nigel". I can't remember "Nigel"'s original artist though.

Don't Cry (Guns and Roses) covered by Mogwai
Big in Japan (Alphaville) covered by Guano Apes.

Slight change of sound with Don't Cry, only the singing really, but it changes sooooo much.
Big in Japan, well it's two different sides entirely, just have to hear them to appreciate them.

Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds cover of "Let It Be" and Tori Amos' cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" are both nice mellow tracks.

Ode To Joy (Ludwig Beethoven) - The Beatles
Across the Universe (The Beatles) - David Bowie
The Man Who Sold the World (David Bowie) - Nirvana
Lithium (Nirvana) - Duran Duran
Girls on Film (Duran Duran) -Wesley Willis

Five degrees of separation from Beethoven to Wesley Willis!

(could actually do it in four)

Other Great Covers:

Sweet Dreams (Eurythmics) - Marilyn Manson
Star Me Kitten (REM) - William S Burroughs
Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen) - Jeff Buckley
Crazy Train (Ozzy Osbourne) - Pat Boone!
Girl (The Beatles) - Tiny Tim!

Worst reason to do a cover: To promote an album by a new artist who has not yet put out any other work. This is sadly way too common (Manson Cover above). Covers should be B-sides or also-on-album songs only.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

I thought his first big hit was "beautiful people' I thought that sold his albums. I hate the guy. His music is to Anti-christ for my liking. Rarely do I shun an artist for his lyrics, but Manson just over does it.

I love how everyone actually buys Manson's satanist/anti-christ image. That's all it is, an image. I hear him referred to as a "satanic rocker" all the time, and it makes me laugh.
