According to this forum post, the project is effectively dead. Pity, it would have been an interesting idea.

Hmm. Maybe I'll improve my Valve tool skills during summer. I got a lot of ideas for a remake and a side adventure (I guess you can call that fan-fiction...3-D) if I ever stick to them for long. I don't usually like my own false promises.

The source engine isn't exactly made for puzzle games like the Trilby adventures. Not everyone wants to use the 'E' use key to pick or take stuff all the time. Some want the puzzles or actions to have the use of the mouse buttons. Some may want jumping puzzles. Some just want to stack up stuff.

I'm trying to imagine how different the atmosphere would be if Trilby talked in first person or there was some cutscene with him interacting/talking to/with objects/characters. Not so many FPS characters speak in their first person view mode.

I would've just given him his umbrella and a modified version of the TF2's handgun.

Can you explain why, please?
Slow walking baddies easier to dodge ?

I don't see any other obstacles, as so many 3D games are actually 2D games in disguise (or even 1D for some of them).

You could always design a mouse cursor interface or something; like, you press a button, and then a mouse cursor appears and you can move that over objects you see to interact with them like an adventure game. Press the button again and you revert to FPS mode.

I hate you all... so very much.
"I felt insulted until I realized that the people trying to mock me were the same intellectual titans who claimed that people would be thrown out of skyscrapers and feudalism would be re-institutionalized if service cartels don't keep getting political favors and regulations are cut down to only a few thousand pages worth, that being able to take a walk in the park is worth driving your nation's economy into the ground, that sexual orientation is a choice that can be changed at a whim, that problems caused by having institutions can be solved by introducing more institutions or strengthening the existing ones that are causing the problems, and many more profound pearls of wisdom. I no longer feel insulted because I now feel grateful for being alive and witnessing such deep conclusions from my fellows."

You've basically just described the Penumbra games.

I also recall a distant discussion about the manor being an architectural anomaly.

It's just fucked up, and you probably couldn't get away with trying to create it in 3d.

I think it has potential. I mean, could go on 4chan and have 'who likes Zero Punctuation' then just put something like 'this is the Yahteest thing I've seen' and have a random picture of say... someone cosplaying an imp.

Yes. For a couple seconds I had hesitated to copy-paste a trilby hat on GW Bush, an owl or the Katrina hurricane, and add some random half-coherent statement involving yahtzeeism, but then I think I would have felt a bit sick.

I'm not sure internet meme parodies are much easier to digest than internet memes.

That's because it's a very thin line between ironic parody and stupidity. It only takes a slight nudge away from genius to look like a retarded 4channer.

Or a contextual leap of faith.

Anyway, for those who are mildly curious but don't want to ever, EVER play the Penumbra games themselves, there's also a full longplay of "Penumbra Black Plague" on youtube.

I see two options here:

1. Ever read Danielewski's "House of Leaves"1?

2. Take some creative liberties with the house itself and force it to work (in a way that may not be exactly how you remember it).

1You may want to go here if you're not sure what I'm talking about or are wondering why the word "house" is in blue. -J

I've been so tempted to pick that book up, but I rarely fork out hardback prices, and I feel that a smaller paperback would ruin the format somewhat. Is it worth splashing out on?

I agree on point 2. the layout of the house isn't particularly important, although one could argue that the way its laid out adds to the oddness of the whole situation. However, I can't see anything stopping you from re-working bits and pieces
