I double checked the credits to be sure. It's called "Penumbra", it's some sort of semi-cheap 3D first-person horror survival adventure game with zero fps element (uh, except for the f and the p), and it features the most yahtzeean storytelling, the most yahtzeesque humour, and the most yahtzeeic sense of desperation I've seen in any game, including the trilby series and 1213. In fact, it's pure chzo/1213 juice, concentrated, and poured into a gloomy, modern 3D engine. To the point that it becomes at times almost previsible to trilby/1213 players. Also there's two episodes so far (I still hope for a third one), which reinforces the trilby episodes reminiscence.

So, I'm a bit enthousiastic yes. But those who liked the chzo/1213 atmosphere, kind of story, kind of twists, and kind of "sincerity", are the same ones who'll love it.

There. Avault reviews (avault still exists?) :

Find a copy, and tell me how much not wrong I was. Don't get too emotional either.

The only thing I hope for is that the word "yahtzeest" never catches on.
"I felt insulted until I realized that the people trying to mock me were the same intellectual titans who claimed that people would be thrown out of skyscrapers and feudalism would be re-institutionalized if service cartels don't keep getting political favors and regulations are cut down to only a few thousand pages worth, that being able to take a walk in the park is worth driving your nation's economy into the ground, that sexual orientation is a choice that can be changed at a whim, that problems caused by having institutions can be solved by introducing more institutions or strengthening the existing ones that are causing the problems, and many more profound pearls of wisdom. I no longer feel insulted because I now feel grateful for being alive and witnessing such deep conclusions from my fellows."
-Jimmy McTavern, 1938.

I recall trying out the demo once, it's Cthulhu mythos pastiche (as is the Trilby series to some extent), so no wonder they're quite similar. It was fun for a while, but not really my thing.

Er... Wouldn't Yahtzeest (Presumably pronounced Yahtzee-est) mean "most like Yahtzee"?

And wouldn't that, therefore, mean that only Yahtzee /CAN/ make the Yahtzeest thing ever? See, because he's Yahtzee, even a completely different game is the Yahtzeest thing. Because it's made by Yahtzee.

So it could be better than a Yahtzee game, but it can't be Yahtzeest thing ever because it's not by Yahtzee.

But hey, I'll give it a shot.

Heh, I played the game, quite enjoyable. The real focus on interaction, using your brain, figuring out the scenario, and a couple of fast paced reaction sequences make this a very memorable game.

For clarity: There was a tech demo released called Penumbra that showed off nifty things like physics and lighting with some puzzles. It ended abruptly, but it was a tech demo, so what do you expect.
However the demo raised enough interest in Penumbra that they decided to make into into a real game, taking on the episoidic format of a trilogy (though the 3rd part may be more of an expansion pack?).

I played the first one, and loved it, for many touches and the way the whole thing came across. I didn't know they'd released the second game so thanks for the heads up Absent.

When you call something 'the gayest' that does not imply it's gay. Your opinion on it is that it is very similar to being gay.

It's like this, y'see: what we REALLY love is the IDEA of Yahtzee, not Yahtzee himself, so it's perfectly possibly that someone other then Yahtzee can create something Yahtzier than Yahtzee.

No... when I say the people in this picture are the gayest, I literally mean that they're being homosexual. My saying that is not implying anything, it's what the people are doing that makes it gay.

According to this forum post, the project is effectively dead. Pity, it would have been an interesting idea.

Was playing Penumbra there... im getting weird graphical oddities (stuff keeps appearing and disappearing) and when I paused it, the cursor locked up... not a good start.Wonder if there's patches

edit: also a pity about the 3d mod going down the tubes. I'm tempted to try and make a DeFoe manor map for HL2DM but I suck at map making, and don't know my way round hammer...

The DeFoe manor in 3d? I've given it a lot of thought and I've realised that the DeFoe manor, as shown in Yahtzee's game, can't exist in 3d. Even taking the map into account. Regardless, onto the original topic...

I've just played Penumbra Black Plague. It's the last in the series so the third episode is going to be an expansion pack, not a continuation.
Put simply, it's a really good game.
Works fine on Linux, though had to tinker with one or two things.
