They are not Graphic Novels. They are comic books. A graphic novel would be a novel which is described graphically. A comic book is a story told with pictures and words. Unless it's a picture book.

That said, there is nothing /WRONG/ with comic books. I like comic books. I like epic ones like Watchmen or Sin City. I like modern comics like 52. I like The Dark Knight. I also like silver age comic books. I like things where Batman turns into an ape, or Superman starts shooting rainbows out of his hands. I find them funny.

But, they're still comics. Manga, too. Those are comics. The literal translation is essentially the same as a comic book. If you say "It's not a comic book, it's manga" you say "It's not a comic book, it's a comic book."

So, in the reverse of the cry of thousands of angsty teenagers...

STOP CALLING THEM GRAPHIC NOVELS!

THEY'RE FUCKING COMIC BOOKS!

I always thought the difference was the cover. The GNs are multiple volumes in a sturdier cover. I am probably right, you know.
"The problem is, you're not a kangaroo... that's a bear... and he's in your pants."
"Maybe artists shouldn't talk about their art."
"Well kids, I guess your father isn't a hermaphrodite."
"Izzy! enough with the rabid smootching!!"

There's a difference between a comic book and a graphic novel, and it's the same difference between a short story and a regular novel.

And that isn't the only way adjectives work. That's like saying a coffee table book is about coffee tables. An English novel is written in English and a graphic novel is told graphically (that is, with pictures).
"I've come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubble gum."
-John Carpenter's They Live

"God help us...in the future."

If a graphic novel is not a graphic novel, then what is a graphic novel? Maybe some sort of slasher story?

I think I already settled this. I am probably right.

If a comic book is a book with pictures and words, then what is a cook book? A comic book with recipes? mellow.gif happy.gif

I think a novel which is described graphically would be called a Graphical Novel.

This is one of those issues that requires you to be a pretentious ass to get worked up over. Is it really worth it to use both Bold and increased font size on an issue such as this? You save things like that for the death of a president.

Or pies.

PIES!

On a side note, my sister and her new boyfriend started out drawing Manga for each other. Nerd love. wub.gif

A novel that is especially clever would be a novel novel. A clever novel with pictures would be a novel graphic novel. The front cover of a clever novel with pictures would have a novel graphic novel graphic. I'll stop now. ... or will I??!? devil.gif
