As a fellow musician, let me give you my honest impression along with constructive criticism.

The distortion that you used is pretty jarring. It sounds like you're playing with an Ibanez through a Boss Metal Zone and the mix was off because of it. If you must use that high-gain sound, lower the volume to mesh better with the acoustic. I would prefer to hear you play it with an overdrive pedal, maybe a Tubescreamer if you have access to one.

You're obviously a decent guitarist, though. Kudos for that.

Okay, now I'll let the non-music snobs talk.

Thanks, man!

Okay about the cover:
It's great but for the volume levels/mix, I'm with Joshofalltrades.
Balance out the electric guitars with the acoustic part playing underneath and it'll sound really proffessional, I think anyway...

Also, it sounds to me like it needs another two or maybe four bars at te end there so that is is either compete and resolving or almost complete and resolving-- after all, it's a 5das theme.
It's almot there, keep going. And if you don't like anything any of us say about the piece, just remember it's your baby and yours to fiddle with. And keep in mind I'm a musician but not a guitar player so feel free to kick my donkey at GH.

A good start.

I'm not guitarist, but I gotta give my impresion as a pianist.

Note wise, I don't think anything was out of porportion.

Sound wise, the section where you started playing the electric guitar raped my ears drums (a little). I think it was around 00:16 and 00:32. It would've been nice if you streched the end bit.

"Kudos" for actually doing this. Yahtzee would be proud.

PS: for some reason, I felt something down the bottom of my heart and a small tear appeared.

Since when did Deviantartists became musicians? I'm sure there aren't any music people out there who wouldn't be happy to hear some constructive critisism.

----
Now that we're talking about music, how would the John Doe quadrology fit into the category of dark ambient or ambient industrial (and a bit a ambient noise)? Both genres are pretty creepy and atmospheric. It would be nice in case someone decides to make a 3-D version (which I'm sure someone is already working on it).

First off, I don't have a deviant art account...what where you getting at?

There are a few in some of my creative arts degree classes that would take constructive critisism the wrong way and never play or compose again so I tread carefully with any music I give my opinion on these days.

Also, it would depend on what part of the quadrilogy the music was being written for, some places the ambient industrial would work quite well, like during the reality shifts in 6DAS...

Okay, for some reason I forgot about this topic O_o

anyways yeah, I made this without doing any EQing, balancing, anything. I was an idiot at the time and I've recently gotten much better at leveling.

I also ditched my distortion and got a Metal Muff by Electro Harmonix, and also a condenser mic to add on to my dynamic.

All in all, I'm rerecording this tomorrow and probably adding some more touches to it with Guitar Rig, and I don't know what else. Maybe some drums? ...nah. Well, maybe. We'll see.

In any case, I'll definitely have this done sometime tomorrow in the daytime. I'll keep ya guys posted, I promise this one will sound a lot better!

Also, any recommendations for another song? It's hard to choose a song for this, cause some of them loop a lot and aren't really enough to do a guitar cover of.

5D and 6D do work quite well with the ambient noise genre. I'm not sure about 7D, since it has a slightly different atmosphere and more of the puzzle like surrounding with less encounters than 5D or 6D.

Reason why I thought ambient found fit because the world shifts were similar to Silent Hill and its atmosphere (except for the dream sessions or the Deja vus).

I'm sure it would do m0ds' heart good to have some of his MIDI work performed.

Maybe I just have a personal bias against hi-gain distortions, but I prefer overdrives. I'm sure I already mentioned it. Anyway, you really can't go extremely wrong with Electro-Harmonix stuff. I still swear by their Big Muff Pi when I'm not making noises with the Z-Vex Fuzz Factory.

Looking forward to hearing the new stuff.

It's okay! There are actually a few videos on YouTube of people playing songs from the games & that chaps renditions for the 3D game I think....all of which feature some of my tunes. So my heart is feeling good smile.gif

I used to play bass for Metal Muff. However, Big Muff always got a warmer reception than we did.*

I'm also looking forward to hearing the new stuff. I've messed around with some of the midi in Garage Band but I haven't come up with a mix I like yet.

Yay for m0ds, his well working heart, and his total lack of being a jerk to those who want to (tastefully) mess around with his work!

*That is a lie.

Hear, hear!

Great work m0ds and starman0 and Mandy Writes and anyone else.

The music in the XDAS series really brought home how freaked out I was getting playing the games.
Enhanced the atmosphere, if I can use such a wanky term.

So thank you.

Its quite fascinating how such simple graphics and some MIDI tones can create some atmosphere.
