Preamble:
So I had to drive 500km to another city to meet with some clients. It is a 3 days trip, so I arranged to sleep over at a friend. The day before I left I got a phone call from her(my friend) that her grandmother has died, and that, unfortunatelly, she has to leave town to go to the funeral, but that I am still welcome to stay at her place, and that she will arrange for me to get the keys. So I drive there (8 hours drive because of traffic), and I have the keys and the indications on how to find the appartment.

The story

So I find the building and I get into the elevator, I press the number 4 button and I wait for the elevator to do it's job. And the next thing I see are the keys to the appartment dropping from my hand, onto the floor, inbetween the elevator doors, and down into the floor gap.

Attempting not to panic, and still not believing what just happened, I ring at a random door to ask for the administrator's appartment number. Some lady yells at me behind the door "What do you want?" ,"Excuse me, I seem to have lost my keys in the elevator, I say, I am looking for the administrator's appartment" . "Appartment 65, floor 6". Still ,she's not opening the door, she is still yelling from behind the closed door.

Ok, so I climb to floor nr. 6 (being too affraid to take the elevator again). This time, the administrator does open the door when I ring. I present the situation to her and ask her for help in retrieving my keys. "Well..." she says " it's too late in the evening to call the elevator company, you'll have to wait until tomorrow morning". I procedded to explain to her (again) that the keys that I dropped where to the appartment where I was supposed to stay for the night. I cannot come back tommorrow morning.
"What if I got stuck in the elevator", I ask, "would you have me waiting in the elevator until tommorrow"?
"Oh no, she answers, If you got stuck in the elevator, that would have been an emergency, I would call the elevator company".
"Still, you cannot expect me to sleep on the street, it's still some sort of an emergency for me you know"
"I'm sorry, she says, I wish there was something I could do. Good night !" and then she closes the door.

Gosh I hate this city, people here suck. And elevators too.

You should have angled in to stay at lady administrators place for the night and administer some elevating of your own.

That could have backfired horribly.
"I felt insulted until I realized that the people trying to mock me were the same intellectual titans who claimed that people would be thrown out of skyscrapers and feudalism would be re-institutionalized if service cartels don't keep getting political favors and regulations are cut down to only a few thousand pages worth, that being able to take a walk in the park is worth driving your nation's economy into the ground, that sexual orientation is a choice that can be changed at a whim, that problems caused by having institutions can be solved by introducing more institutions or strengthening the existing ones that are causing the problems, and many more profound pearls of wisdom. I no longer feel insulted because I now feel grateful for being alive and witnessing such deep conclusions from my fellows."

Well, what happened then : I rang to her door again, then politelly asked for the number of the elevator company. After a short argument I finally got the phone number and I called them from my handy.

I pleaded and begged (but didn't cry) to the operator to send anyone to help me with the keys. In the end she agreed to call and see if a technician was willing to come in his free time to help me, if I would pay him for the trouble. Some guy showed up 40 minutes later and retrieved my keys, but then I discovered all the cash I had in my wallet amounted to about 15$ .. not even enough to pay for his cab fare.

I gave him the 15$ and smartly winked at him, as if I was passing him a 100$ bill. He looked at me and realized I might be mentally deranged, so he took the bill, said goodbye, and left.

I'm sure he left thinking "Damn I hate this city! Get me out of my bed, and it ends up costing me money!" I also bet the next guy to ask for a special late-night favour will be turned down. Nice job, Radu. You have taken one more person of good will who is willing to help strangers, and turned him into a cynic.

Glad you got what you wanted, though. Next time don't drop your keys down an elevator shaft and then wail that the city is against you when it doesn't immediately rally to your service. Because, really.

The city's mighty suckiness did what now? Did it will gravity to work ovetime on those keys you were holding in your hand as you crossed the threshold of the elevator? Did it will you to do this late at night? Did it will the landlady into politely and then not-so politely explaining that it would take less than 24 hours for you to get satisfaction, though more than the immediate gratification you desired? Did it produce for you an individual willing to come out and help you after hours (oh yes, it did that)? Then did it will you to rip off the poor schlep who took pity on you and actually came out on his own time to help?

Man, that city sucks.

Well, if you put it that way...You are totally reversing the entire situation!

Let me fix some of the problems :

- I was all alone in a huge city that I hate.
- I dropped the keys at arround 7:00PM, which I woudn't call exactly late.
- The landlady was a bitch.
- The gap in the elevator threshold was about the size of a small baby white whale. You could catch your foot in that gap, let alone a set of keys.
- In theory, the elevator company provides 24x7 support , and the technic guy was actually staying at home whilst being paied , as this was durring normal work hours.
- The landlady was a bitch.
- It's just that at 7:00 PM people would rather keep their asses at home rather than helping inocent visitors.

I'm not saying what I did was nice, or acceptable, or that I felt OK with it. All I had was 15$ worth of money, and no real imediate way for me to get any more. I assure you I was planning on giving 70 -100$ to the guy, if I had that money on me.

It might not have been pretty , but it sure as hell isn't comming close to closing the door on a poor smuchk that doesn't have a place to sleep over night because I'm too lasy to get my ass to give a simple phonecall to call for a technician.
