QUOTE (J m HofMarN @ Mar 25 2008, 01:13 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
It really is hilarious how you lot accuse CAD fanboys of being vile slavering beasts, and Buckley of being, at least, a plagiarizing pedophile who DARES to charge ten dollars for a product completely different than what Yahtzee sells for five.

And yes, some of the ardent CAD fans kiss Buckley's ass. Fans tend to do that. For instance, when Yahtzee points out his dislike for Buckley certain people hop up to happily say that the object of Yahtzee's ire is pure evil incarnate.

Well, the big thing is Yahtzee isn't a pedophile, and Buckley is. I don't care if the Buckley wrote Hamlet, To Kill a Mocking bird, and the holy Quran, it doesn't change the fact that he sends pictures of his flaccid dick to 12 year olds.

Well, it's not like we were hiding the fact we hated CAD until Yahtzee backed us up, it's just the topic of discussion, I don't talk about Buckley in the "What are you listening to" thread.

Vile slavering beasts? Nah, I mean, I think that people who praise him are empty headed, I just can't see myself sticking up for a pedophile, and I don't understand the mentality of people that do.

That's fair enough I suppose; although even against pedophiles disliking someone's work because of the artist and not the work itself is completely bent; even if that's only part of the whole reason.

And Ghello, in response to your post earlier (I'd have posted this sooner but my internet did a James Brown impression last night), here is some information and a picture of a cat wearing a hat and bow tie.

Yeah I did notice he didn't say "Hey Legion", the fact that he utterly failed to name any specific target or demographic is why I was pissed off - it's called a blanket statement. Unless he specifically says "you guys who aren't sucking Buckley's dick are okay" - and you'll notice he didn't - it is called a blanket statement because zero indication to the contrary is made. And I didn't say lock the thread because of the flaming, I said lock it because the thread is going nowhere. Flaming is always fun (hence my previous post) but if the whole thread is going to go back and forth between "CAD sucks" and "yeah well YOUR MUM sucks" then I'm not going to waste any time in it except to bitchslap anyone who tries to tell ME what category I belong in. This isn't about my feelings being hurt, this is about me being pissed off because the one thing that will always set me off is someone who thinks they know my opinions better than I do (which also explains my inherent hatred of politicians and Jehovah's Witnesses).

In regards to the other stuff: the Gilligan's Island thing is a reference to a favourite comedian of mine as he says the same thing. The jesus line is there because I'm known for stretching out my curses and Jesus fucking Christ or Jesus h. Christ are too overused. And the dicksmasher thing is a reference to a Bash.org quote about hurricanes. Behold my geekiness.

And no, I wasn't implying anything. How you managed to draw a line between a television show about people stranded on a tropical island and a computer comic about robots, violence and tits is completely beyond me.
I'm not pessimistic; I've just realised that the light at the end of the tunnel is an incoming train.

While we're having some healthy discussion, lets have some more lulz. I'm sure Buckley wouldn't mind:

Heh, that's actually a damn fine point.

Although sadly that rules out the existence of Calibre, the goddess of assault weapons.

You know something? If we really had a sense of fair-play about this, one of us would get an incognito screen-name and pop over to Buckley's forums to post a topic about "OMG the ZP guy hates your GUTS!!' then provide a link back here.

Then we might see some real debate. As it is, everyone just seems to be sitting around agreeing with each other. Which is largely useless.

But firstly, I have to ask what you considered his 'better work'.

His writing, primarily, along with his games, through which his writing shines. His humor was stifled when he was scrambling for a punchline for every comic instead of being able to work at his own pace.

QUOTE (Legion [paraphrased] @ Mar 25 2008, 08:17 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Fuck you, you fucking fuck, fuck.

General statements about a group of people typically do not refer to the very obvious exceptions. No one's complaining about the people who simply read CAD in private without regurgitating praise for it all over everyone.

Edit: Rereading my original post, my wording was a bit vague. The distinction lied, for me, in using "CAD fans" versus "people who read CAD," but not everyone thinks exactly like me.

What? No! Me? No. innocent.gif

Seriously, trolling would be even more pointless then the universal agreement around here.

Still, we have no one to represent the other perspective: the one that likes Buckley. Or even the perspective that:

[devil's advocate] Yahtzee's just blowing hot air! His own webcomics are trash so where does he get off telling an established artist like Buckley what does and doesn't work in the world of internet humor? He should go back to slagging off on the Big Name Titles everyone else loves, because that's all he's reallygood at.[/devil's advocate]

....You see? You see what the lack of Another Team or even another Point of View is doing to me? Stupid Devil's Advocate reflex!

Hear Dial, he speak truth!

Though I'll admit Chris and Trilby made me chuckle out-loud in the darkness of my lair. If only it had stopped trying to have a continuous storyline, it might have been much more sustainable.

He already said it, so I think we should lay off that topic and get at B^U-cking.

(why is the first reaction to a artist to artist criticism is "jealousy"?)(not in this thread, I mean.)

I think it's because of our Hyprocrite Detectors and standards of worth: it's unreasonable for you to ask of others what you're unwilling to do yourself. And if Buckley is really as closed-minded as everyone says he is, then he's probably used "what has he/she done that they can tell me what to do anyway?" as armor against descent.

WHY he said it is the thing. Why did he feel that, for his criticism to be taken seriously, he needed to distance himself from his own work in the very field he's talking about? Is that a commonly held notion, that someone cannot be both critic and creator?

Well think of it this way, if you're walking down the street and your surrounded by a decent crowd of maybe 10 people and someone drives by and yells "Faggot!" in your crowds direction, would you get mad? That's how I saw it anyways.

and that Gilligan thing: I was trying to figure out how to draw that line also, that's hwy I asked =P

In response Ghello, actually I would. The first thing I'd think is "What the fuck is that moron's problem, I hope he hits a tree," swiftly followed by "I wonder if he meant me or this crowd" and then "Fuck him, who cares anyway?" I think my posts in response to Dial have gone much the same way. And to help with the Gilligan thing, to be more specific it's a reference to aforementioned comedian, 2 the Ranting Gryphon. I think it was his piece on America with the given Gilligan gag.

Dial, general statements don't make exceptions, even to the obvious exceptions. This is why they're general statements in the first place. In any case thank you for correcting yourself about the blanket statement; seeing as you've pointed out that you did in fact mean a particular group and not a vaguely-defined majority, I apologize for blowing up in your face. It was late and I was annoyed and could not find a camel. Please accept this rocket launcher and small yappy dog as a peace offering.

Well I took the challenge and read the Wikipedia article's talk page. I've watched Twelve Angry Men twice, but Jack Lemmon would blush at the amount of reasonable doubt poured onto anything even resembling something that didn't favor CTRL ALT DEL. Did you know that FUCK ANYTHING said on the internet is not a valid source? That if you are on the internet at some point in time anything you say will become invalid?

Yeah, as it stands I'm quite prepared to say that Thrindel, who is certainly in no way Tim Buckley or one of his surrogates, knows about Yahtzee's existence and is all pissed off. So when Yahtzee is raped to death by a dozen CAD fanboys who arent at all acting on Thrindel's orders, Thrindel who, as we agreed, is not at all Tim Buckley, I'll be sure to say some very respectful words at his funeral.

I started out here saying it was uncool to jump on a webcomic and its artist so there was some half hearted opposition, but screw that noise. I still rather like hte comics, but then I'm more literal than image oriented, so maybe the buckleyboxing doesn't bother me too much.

I do have one point that needs to be debated though:

QUOTE
"Then we might see some real debate"

The debate you speak of would make the "debate" between prequelists and origina trilogy fans look topical and well spoken. However if it occurs in a steel cage I would give you a pint of virgin blood to see it.

I think if theres any debate required it's for some FR fans, and FR readers, to point out that maybe when one is discussing internet cultural phenomenon, internet sources ought not to be invalid.
