I'm surprised there wasn't a topic about this yet. You guys have seen it, right? It's supposed to be good.

I liked the movie, sure. The songs were pretty, and so was the production and the cast. But by the end, I was left with the impression that it was a cross between a musical and one of those multiple layers of meaning stoner films that everyone seems to love (like The Big Lebowski), not because of any low-brow humor but because the movie was one big drug reference. I interrupt this thought because I just looked up the Oscars and realized that they were just today. Holy crap. I'm surprised Across the Universe didn't win any, because the songs tied in perfectly with the situations, and the singing was excellent.

So maybe it won't be remembered as a timeless classic, but due to this movie Paul McCartney's ego is that much bigger, and that we can be thankful for.

EDIT: Ah, bugger. Wrong forum. A little help here?

We have it currently, haven't viewed it yet. Any lame and redundant messages in the film? I'm still thinking the soundtrack to the Cirque Beatles' LOVE show will win out as my favorite, but I'll give the flick a chance. LOVE is pretty trippy, but it's the actual Beatles.

I heard the leads in ATU are lined up to play in a stage musical of Spider-Man...

I wouldn't call it a preachy movie. If you took out all the songs and summarized it in a minute, it would be really simple. Aside from a constant anti-war/anti-cop theme (which Lennon would most likely agree with) there's not an emotion or message that doesn't tie in quite nicely with the Beatles song they choose to represent it.

I don't know how well the soundtrack would stand up without the visuals, but I will say that the real singing talent in the movie is from the minor roles, like the quickly-forgotten girlfriend at the beginning or that random black kid. I guess they were respectively too ugly or too young to be given more than one song.
