I kind of want to write something more intelligent than "pile of shite" here but nothing more articulate comes to mind. When it comes down to it things like this are a case of people being told what they want to hear and believing it. The power of suggestion can be a powerful thing when the people themselves are determined to be fooled.

All I can say is, deeply hope that communication with the dead isn't possible. When I die, I want to be dead. I don't want to be floating around constantly being spoken to by a bunch of con artists. Although, you may wonder why I would consider them to be con artists if I was dead and talking to them, but I probably still wouldn't believe it then.
