think of all of the gaming franchises out there..within each stack there's a game that shines above them all, and sometimes one or two that doesnt.

please try to explain why you feel the game ranks high or low with you. please just list console games,..no PC games.

it will be interesting to see the varied responses...i have listed some random franchises to get your thoughts rolling...

Super Mario
Zelda
Final Fantasy
Sonic The Hedgehog
Halo
Resident Evil
Mortal Kombat
Metal Gear / Solid
Silent Hill
The Sims
Street Fighter
Grand Theft Auto
Mega Man
Castlevania
Pac-Man
Metroid
Need For Speed
Tomb Raider
Duke Nukem
Double Dragon
Time Crisis
Devil May Cry
Bomberman

Sorry to nitpick, but please use some sort of divider such as commas to make it easier to read in future. Also, I would have thought that The Sims and Duke Nukem were PC games that were just ported to consoles later.

Lets see, for Super Mario I think it went downhill when it went 3D. Granted, I haven't played Galaxy, but I think Super Mario World was the peak of the series. Smooth, fun gameplay and nothing but.

With Resident Evil, I'm going to say that I didn't like 4. Actually having to aim put a strong focus on the combat rather then the atmosphere. Instead of being a game where you carefully walked around conserving ammo and the like, you now walked around trying to out-gun things like some sort of reckless cowboy. I would have to point to the Resident Evil Remake on the Cube as the best in the series.

Grand Theft Auto is another one where I hold an unpopular opinion. I liked it when it was top-down 2D. The first two games were much more fun the the third. The third was much too realistic, and just became depressing. The characters were all unlikeable scum and what was once a whimsical chase was now an exercise in a detestable lifestyle.
The Green Knight, SimeSublime the Puffinesque, liker of chips and hunter of gnomes.

Mortal Kombat, oh wow. I think they started slumping just after 3. It didn't seem to make the impact that 2 did, probably due to media outlets just no caring anymore. So to liven things up? 3D arenas.. MK4, total crap. The long wait was probably good though. MK:DA, MK:D, and MK:A were much improved, although they weren't powerhouses like the first three games were. Plus let's not forget MK: Mythologies and Special Forces. Holy crap, bad ideas.

I'd also like to say that the RE remake on the cube was a brilliant move and the DS port of the original was also a great idea. Really in comparison to Outbreak and such. Umbrella Chronicles was a bit of a downer but it added some neat material with Wesker, so it was a bit middle of the line. The RE4 Wii port was a good move though. Although it was more focused on combat, the Wii controls gave it a great arcade type of feel, which I enjoyed.

Devil May Cry = Amazing. Just a balls-out shoot-until-your-fingers-fall-off shooter. The unlimited ammunition made it a joy to play by removing frantic searches for ammo so you could defeat the particularly tricky enemies.
DMC2 and 3? Fucking worthless.

The Metal Gear franchise is one whose merits I will tout until the day that I die. I recognize that once the series made the move into 3D, they began slipping in terms of the stories, but the amazing gameplay experiences provided by each of the MGS titles more than makes up for their ludicrous twists and retarded plot devices. I haven't tried the PSP releases, but I have thoroughly enjoyed every single Metal Gear Solid game / expansion / whatever (see: MGS2 Substance, MGS3: Subsistence, MGS: VR Missions, etc) to date. I even love the criminally underrated VR Missions, despite its ungodly difficulty. Again, the port of the first MGS to the GameCube (Twin Snakes) was an amazing move, combining the much-improved gameplay and visuals of MGS2 with the flawless gaming experience of the first PlayStation game.

Halo can fuck right off. Boring, typical, clicheed-up-the-ass FPS titles aren't really my thing.

Funny enough, Metal Gear Solid (played the older MG games a year or two ago, but they didn't do it for me) is a slightly mixed bag.

MGS1 = one of, if not the best, game ever.
MGS2 = Great, but the story really let itself down. It tried to be too preachy and went about it in an over-complicated manner.
MGS3 = Superb.

Let's see...

As far as Resident Evil goes, I like it. It's never really disappointed me, but that may just be because I always knew what to expect. The first one was really scary for me, had some real shit-my-pants moments. The second one, to me, was kind of boring. Outbreak gave me just what I expected, it was all about surviving. And then the fourth one, it became my new "badass" game after I lost my Metal Gear Solid game.

Silent Hill is da shizznit.

I played a 3-D Pacman game once. It was weird as hell. I like the original, because it's the only game that I will keep playing even though I can never advance at it. Seriously, I suck at Pac-man.

Metal Gear Solid, well, I played the remake of the first game on the Gamecube, and it was awesome. The second, was still good, but had too much... hair? It lacked something. Never played the third.

But there ain't no whales so we tell tall tales

It lacked being released on a console I had. Twin Snakes was good and all, but couldn't they have released the later ones instead?

I follow you all the way on the RE franchise. 4 hit the spot for me, which was a great surprise.

I thought SH and SH 2 were excellent and that the franchise went downhill after that. 3 was ok - just - but 4 (The Room, I think it was called) seemed completely gratuitous. Sadly, I think that's a series that needs to be retired in favor of a new concept.

And the film they made of it was beneath actual discussion. Just thinking about it makes me want to throttle the director.

The Silent Hill movie was filmed in both the town I grew up in (see specifically, the newspaper office that the main character broke into: The Brantford Expositor) and the city I was living in at the time. The only fun part of that movie for me was sitting in the near-empty theatre with my friend pointing at buildings and going "Holy shit, that's right across the street from here!"

I can totes see how that would be Good Times; when I lived in Charleston, SC untold terrible movies and miniseries were filmed there, but I'd watch them all so that I could see familiar. coffee shops and trees and shit like that. ^^

The creepy hospital was right across from the theatre. It's actually an old abandoned housing complex in the core of downtown Hamilton. If you look in the broken windows during the day, you can still see writing on the walls that was added for the film.
