Doom.

I found Doom on the SNES, i believe its pretty much a carbon copy of the PC version (feel free to lampoon me if this is not the case). Anyway, it was '95 or '96 and the invisible Yaks scared the crap out of me...

The origional Half Life had a few jumpy moments, not scary as such, but it did have an unsettling sense of scale at times.

Being the sucker for links and free stuff I am, I now have this up, and am running it through DOS-box. However, I can't get the bloody thing started! I can get it here, but it always seems to have redirected to Hybrid.exe which doesn't allow me to move on to the actual game! I'm very annoyed, and would like some advice (beyond "use Wikipedia or Google"!).

Still can't get it to work. It's not like I'm not making perfect sense here, so can someone please give me some sort of solution. After that you can all complain bitterly about me bumping my own post...

Actually, they put alot of effort into making it scary...everytime you do anything, a monster jumps out at you.

The Project Zero (or Fatal Frame as they're called in America) series.
I haven't played the third one yet, but the first two scared the living shit out of me.

I think I've probably mentioned it before somewhere, but Beneath A Steel Sky creeped me out big time toward the end.

Resident Evil 2 did it for me, as well biggrin.gif

I can't think of any more for now.
Smashed up my sanity.
Smashed up my integrity.
Smashed up what I believed in,
Smashed up what's left of me.
Smashed up my everything,
Smashed up all I thought was true,
'gonna smash myself to pieces,
I don't know what else to do.

... indeed. However being 11 years old at the time and having only Fifa '94 and Starfox to compare it too, it was a bit of a fork in the road.

Having said that, Andross from Starfox was pretty wierd...

... looks a little like Cher

For me Beneath A Steel Sky never really creeped me out but it did have the greatest atmosphere of any adventure game I've played. And to top it off the puzzles really made you think without being illogical. In my opinion, the greatest adventure game ever made.

I second that. I especially liked sending him through that dark tunnel without any lights. And watching him getting eaten by that monster. And then doing it again. I believe someone already pointed out that I have a sadistic side, so I might as well admit it, I guess.

Way too short though, Beneath A Steel Sky.

A game that really got to me was the first Blood game... Not so much the initial levels, but there is one (or more levels) that take place in the arctic seas. You have to swim around in that deep, dark water and there are... Things down there. Ack.

Did anyone else find the ending part of Portal a bit creepy? Come to think of it, the entire game was disturbing. It was simultaneously hilarious and unsettling at the same time. And it was subtly done, as well. God, what a great game.

It was simultaneously hilarious and unsettling at the same time.

Especially the little song by Glados at the end.

That song was fantastic biggrin.gif
Pure brilliance from beginning to end, that game.

"Manhunter" was pretty scary.

"Veil of Darkness" and "Quest for Glory 4" have a creepy atmosphere, for those, who like gothic-style.
