Several people have asked, so I want to let everyone know that Shimmering Sword: Samurai, Western, and Star Wars Sword Fighting has been revised and expanded to include all 6 of the SW movies.

McFarland Publishing in North Carolina has picked it up and will be publishing it under a different title. It won't be marketed as a second edition, but the text is based on the original. I don't know what title they will settle on, but they wanted something more explicit so its attachment to SW would be more easily recognized.

I've been working on the research for about 9 months, then 2 months to write the new chapters about the Force, the lightsaber, and the Jedi & Sith orders, as well as the expansion of the final chapter which critiques the lightsaber fighting in Episodes II or III. I've added footnotes, moved chapters around, and revised the text and corrected spelling and grammar. I don't know if the book will be hard cover or not.

McFarland does not give advances (traditional publishers give have an advance when signing a contract, then the other half upon receipt of the final manuscript). They pay once a year, in March. So I won't be paid until March 2009, as it takes 9-12 months to publish a book. These terms are not private, but standard on their website, which is unusual in the industry.

McFarland's primary market is academia or library systems. They do not place their books in bookstores, which saves them in overprinting and bookstore returns. While I know that the library market is huge (they tend to buy 1-10 hardcovers for their system), I am hoping another trade publisher might be willing to print it for a bookstore audience. I know the book would sell itself if it were on the shelf next to other Star Wars books or in the military section.

(Yes, some will say that this post belongs in the book section, but Chef usually lets me post my book-related threads here because its SW-related.)

Consider at least one copy sold, to me. smile.gif If no one has read this book yet, YOU MUST! It's a really, really interesting book about the history of sword fighting throughout history and how it ties into Star Wars via the lightsaber. I would think you'd find the book really interesting even if you don't have interest in Star Wars.

It's very well written and extremely interesting.

Cool I'll look forward to it being published. The first one was a good read so I'll be interestesd to see what you've come up with after including all the films.

And when it is published, let's hope times will change and that Amazon or some other internet bookstore WILL send it to my backwater fundamentalist country.
Congratulations, Nick, you totally derserve it!
