I noticed there was no thread for the film adaptation of "The Golden Compass" so I'm starting one for those who saw the film to post their opinions. I have not seen it yet myself, but I will see it very soon (possibly tomorrow).

I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an obi-wan to go.

I knew from this moment that the film adaption would suck, and the name change only confirms this.

Although I think Nicole Kidman is going to be a good choice for Mrs Coulter. I'm not sure about Daniel Craig as Lord Asrial, he doesn't seem like he has the sort of massive presense Asrial should have. Also, Iorek Brynison looks more lithe and agile than the ten-tonne battletank I'd imagine an armoured bear to be.

I've got to actually see the film in order to prove my points, but that'll be difficult, seeing as neither my folks nor my lady like my incessant "Its not as good as the book" rantings, and I can't really go on my own. I'll be back soon and have the fuller then.

EDIT: Fuck it, having actually looked at the Wikipedia entry, I'm starting already.

QUOTE
There are infinitely many parallel universes; eleven-year-old Lyra Belacqua, an orphan-ward of Jordan College, Oxford, lives in one in which a person's soul resides outside the body in the form of a "dæmon"
Wrong. Souls and dæmons are entirely different things. Start again.

They've also chopped off the last three chapters and will stick them on the next film. If they make it. That worked with Lord of the Rings, it will not work here I can promise you.

Also, the Catholics are being pissy about it, screw them. They're like my mum, they'll always bitch about the bad things rather than praising the good. Its already been watered down, what more do you want?

Carry on, people who've actually seen it.

Well, you have to admit, the movie would not have been such a profitable venture if they left the God-killing anti-Christianity bits in.

Hey, I hadn't even thought of that! They quite literally kill God in the last book, don't they? They can't simply "lol its not religion" their way out of it, they've described the Authority as an old guy looking like God is supposed to. And they need to kill him.

I'm quite looking forward to this devil.gif

Everything I've read for the series says that it's more about resistance against authoritarianism (such as the world's church), and everything against it is pretty much "He kills God and hates on religion." Either way, I haven't read the books and don't care all that much to see the movie, so I'm not jumping on any bandwagon.

I will say, though, that using the same old names and imagery for God as the Judeo-Christian mythology does (as well as apparently other names), seems deliberately inflammatory, and just lazy story telling. It almost makes me want to write some more, so I can fail miserably at putting anything of good quality out in the world instead of sitting in limbo with everything. tongue.gif

It is mostly anti-Authoritarian as you say, but at the same time, it does directly attack Christianity by using its characters and god. He could have made the same exact message using a generic made-up deity and other powerful characters, but he used Biblical ones. I don't think that's right no matter what religion the author is attacking. And yeah, it's cheap and lazy.

The worst part for me though, is that these two 12/13 year olds "fall in true love" and make out and stuff. Ew! tongue.gif

Just watched it. It's not bad, but I think it needed to run a little longer.
