It's like any game. You like it or you don't. I don't like Final Fantasy games, or RPGs in general. I don't understand the appeal. But hey, lots of people like them, so they have to be doing something right. It's the same as music, different people have different tastes in games the same way they do music.

QUOTE (Chyld @ Dec 16 2007, 10:37 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
And so I have, I first discovered music via generic heavy nu-metal bands. I'm comfortable knowing this, I've grown since then. And ~I'll finish my point when I'[m not a-phoning biggrin.gif

Right then, the first examples of any music I liked were crappy nu-metal bands. And I mean, the crappiest. In not very long at all, I started finding other metal bands, some still nu, but all very not crappy. Still metal. Coming to uni helped lower my rather pretentious attitude to anything not metal (RAOR IT FCUKING SUXX!!!11grrzorz), which let me appreciate mellower rock, and even poppier things. Rampant drug taking railroaded me into even more things (dnb particularly, although not Northern English dnb, which is just a monotonous beat and some incomprensible chavvy twat trying to "MC"), and now I can quite easily enjoy anything that isn't some (generally) black guy telling us about how he likes shooting people and drinking Cristal.

Nowadays I can look back on crappy nu-metal with nostalgia. Its bizarre. blushing.gif

So I tried Rock Band for the first time today. I can honestly say that any/all "REAL GUITAR IS BETTER THAN GUITAR HERO" bullshit can safely be put to rest. I decided, upon sitting down to try Rock Band that I would have a go at the drums. Being a drummer, it seemed logical. I proceeded to be thoroughly RAPED by the game, despite being a fairly accomplished percussionist. After spending some time fiddling and getting a feel for the game, I realized that the gameplay mechanics vs. the mechanics of playing my actual drums are completely different. Obviously, this is the same case with the guitar. So, to put the whole thing into perspective:
Do I feel like people who play the drums in Rock Band should go buy a $1000+ drum kit and learn the real instrument? Of course not. They're two totally different things. The basic idea is there, and the end result is a sound not entirely unlike drumming, but they're still completely different from one another.
Comparing one thing to another is completely unfair. If a drummer can sit down and be destroyed by the video game equivalent to drumming, I can only assume that the same thing applies to the guitar. The difference here is that people are more inclined to learn the game than the real instrument because, well...the game is a hell of a lot easier. I got as good as I am at drumming because I've been playing for over a decade. I got good at Guitar Hero in about a month.
This is a whole lot of rambling, I know, but my end point is this:
Guitar Hero / Rock Band = A game, a toy, something to do for fun.
A real instrument = A (hopefully) lifelong commitment to artistic expression.

Now stop comparing the two.

Respect.

I've played the guitar for a few years a while ago, and having recently played one of these games I too can say that it is an entirely different cup of tea (a different cup of tea that is not so hot and can be drunk with a bit less frustration on my part).

You're a drummer, too, Hecc? I didn't realize that. Yay, fellow percussionist! (You always struck me as more of a bass person, honestly tongue.gif )

But yeah, the actual instruments are so very different, and require years of learning and patience and work; whereas a silly game like GH or RB gives you instant gratification. And I don't really have a lot of friends that will sit down and jam with me on real instruments for fun; but we sure can have fun with a game!

Does anyone know if RockBand will definitely be produced for Wii, and if so, when?

Yeah, we did. I normally despise those idiot image macros, but that one is well placed. Read the thread before you post. And Van Halen sucks, anyway. I'd rather be... I dunno... Joe Stump, or Steve Vai, or some other accomplished shredder that does good music, if I'm going to have to be a wannabe rock musician.

I'll take Eddie over Steve Vai or Joe Stump any day. Vai's a pompous douche. At least VanHalen's earlier music isn't just brainless wankery.

Ah stinger, I play drums too (and I too took Hecc for a bassist!) and was dying to play Rock Band and whoop it on drums at first attempt... ah well!

By the by, is Rock Band as magical as it's cracked up to be?

It's pretty magical! But I've only played the demo (at Best Buy), which means no bass pedal. I didn't find the drums to be challenging that way and could play on expert no problem (but adding the bas pedal in would surely make it much more difficult). It's much easier than having to perfectly sight read actual notes and rhythms first try (like filling in for the jazz drummer that got sick before the night's performance), but it's not like you can just pick up the sticks and lay down a cool beat - it's the matching that's the hard part.

The guitar is pretty much the same as Guitar Hero, except you can still get more star power when you're using star power, and the strummer thingy breaks very easily.

The microphone is pretty funny; you have to make your voice match the little squiggly lines - if the line goes up, you make your voice go up the same amount as the line does. I think that would be ridiculously hard if you didn't already know the song, but in singing Suffragette City on expert it wasn't hard since I know the song note for note/word for word anyway (though I still only got like an 89).

I also like how you can bring your failed partners back in to the game if you do really well, and you get score bonuses if you're both doing really well at the same time. And there are a ton of characters.

I'm crossing my fingers for it to come out for the Wii, cuz I want it, but I won't buy a whole 'nother system for it.

The ladyfriend and I own GH3 and we're both quite happy with it. We're both musicians and can appreciate the game for what it is; and that is a lot of fun. Some of the songs are of the major suckage (sorry folks but I never liked Ozzy Osbourne or Slayer, they can fuck off and die); but then again there was a lot of good stuff in there too. And I'm holding Alice Cooper, Heart, Die Toten Hosen, Disturbed (yeah, I like some of their songs. Any problems, just let me bend over so you can kiss my arse), AFI, The Killers, Guns & Roses, The Who and Eric Johnson's splendid Cliffs of Dover as evidence.

Rock Band isn't out in my city yet. I would like to give it a try, but personally I'm actually quite satisfied with what I have. And I have a Wii, so it sure as hell isn't the eye candy that's making me like the game.

As for Optimus Prime's statement.... yeah. The game is fun, pure and simple. I already know I can't play guitar for crap, that's why I own this game in the first place. It's innovative, fun and has songs I like, that's all I'm after. Delusions of stardom aren't in the package and if they were they wouldn't involve sitting in front of my TV with a beer in one hand and a plastic Les Paul Custom in the other. Besides, you don't have to be able to play real guitar like a pro to be able to appreciate the music. Have you actually played the game? To be truthful I compared it to DDR as well when I first saw it but playing it is a different matter entirely. And well, if you don't like the game or the people playing it, all you have to do is look away. Far be it from me to make you watch me nail Hier Kommt Alex on Hard when you'll be too busy whining that I'm not a real musician, anyway.
I'm not pessimistic; I've just realised that the light at the end of the tunnel is an incoming train.

I played GH3 at the cousins' get together the other day. I really don't fit in, and it's all the girls upstairs, all the guys downstairs. Since they've been playing for like 80 hours straight when I arrived, it didn't take long to get booed offstage for me by comparison. I don't think I started on easy level; the damn thing was wet and sweaty, and I didn't measure up: Fine.

I have a music room and coordinated our combo at work which was very well received. Drums, vocals, guitars, violin and Real music. I had more fun playing for the crowd, even riffling through music for a lost sheet and stalling for time, than I did with the red plastic gee tar. Now my mac keyboard is sweaty. I hate to be uncomfortable.

*the cousins always hog their games, not that I'm really interested in playing. I think they only allowed me to play, so as to see me suck at it. On the other hand, my best bud from New Hampshire was in town and we jammed till two am a couple of nights prior.

nice review, Yahtzee.

This is one of those games I'd rather watch than play. I think I'm more into just listening to the music on the listing than anything. Plus I can't justify the price of GH3 or Rock Band. I had a copy of Um Jammer Lammy for 5 bucks and it's the same basic concept, minus peripherals. Dunno if I would have bought it for more than 10.

Kudos to the devs though, they hit a broad untapped market. Can't fault that.
