what kind of automobile do you own and drive?

I have an automatic 2002 4 door Ford Focus sedan. I bought this car roughly 5 yrs ago, and just days prior to my purchase i had conducted research for what cars under $20,000 are the highest rated, most dependable, etc.

I was surprised to learn the Focus was higher rated than the Honda Civic, which I have nothing against Civics at all, except the fact that they are a hot theft item..and I personally dont want to own a car that I have to consistently worry about being the target of a future theft.

Not to say that someone wouldnt steal my ride,.its a great car and well taken care of, but its nothing special either...just the way i like it.

Unlike some people, I dont chose a car based on style or image. I dont view the roads as an automotive fashion show,.but just a route to take to get from point A to B.

That being said, I basically chose an automobile based on its dependability, how economic it is (both fuel and maintenance), and how versatile it is. I dont care if the car is shaped like a dill pickle, as long as it covers the qualities aforementioned.

Due to the unstable oil economy, with gas hovering around $3.00 per gallon..Im sticking with 4-cylinder engines. I await the advent of when cars will soon have hydrogen fuel cells, I have read that General Motors was supposed to be conducting extensive research into this technology and even is supposed to have their first line of these cars ready in the near future.

It intrigues me to see the different types of cars that people drive. some choose their cars for the same reasons i do, ..others chose a car solely for style, strength, horsepower, torque and speed. some care so much about how they will look in their car.

There is an abundance of stereotypes out on the road. Im sure somewhere that I fit into one too. You have these middle-aged women who drive oversized SUVs that are glossy clean,.and have never encountered a spackle of mud in its automotive lifetime, as these women are seen driving these huge beastly tank-like SUVs all the while chanting endlessly on their cellphones.

Then theres the stereotypical image of the highschooler who has the modded-out Japanese Import with mufflers, steel radials, intake, spoilers, etc.

Then of course, the redneck who has the huge pick-up truck.,.at least a V8,.maybe even diesel, with the iconic sticker of Calvin pissing on the competitors logo in their back windshield. this is usually accompanied by the late Dale Earnhardt's Nascar racing number and/or a Confederate Flag emblem.

A few years ago, my sister was involved in an automobile accident that clearly wasnt her fault, she recently got her insurance settlement and wasted no time in going to the dealership to get a brand spanking new Lexus complete with moonroof, leather and all the fancy goodies.

I should mention that my sister is a licensed real estate agent, and it serves her well to sport an elegant set of wheels, as she may need to transport her clientele from time to time. While I can certainly understand these needs, I felt she could have also bought a comparable car for less dollars than what she got.

Im not too knowledgeable when it comes to actual sticker prices, but if I had to guess, Id say my sis wound up with a car that exceeds $30k easily. I feel that she could have bought a different car for say, at least $5k less..and it would have still met the requirements,.albiet not as elegantly. For example: A Ford Taurus with cloth seats minus the moonroof and excessive panel gadgetry.

anyways. Im curious to know what cars other chefelfers sport,.why they chose that particular car,.if youre happy with it,.or its something youre stuck with for the time being?

Interesting timing, I'm looking for my first car as we speak. I still don't know diddly about cars, but the only cars I could love are Lambourginis and Minis. Now until I'm a world famous writer, Lams are well outside my budget, but unfortunatly, until I get a real job, so are Minis. My budget for a car is only £2000 (circa $4000) and the average Mini costs about £4000, even on eBay, and way, way before insurance.

So for now, I'm hunting either a Peugot 106 (or any Peugot of that size), or a Ford Fiesta. Preferably under 10 years old, and bloody cheap. Since knowing how I am with machinery it'll be a write-off by next Chrsitmas.

I, too, am searching for a car right now. Though that's wickedly hard to do when I don't already have a car with which to go looking at prospective cars. As a starving artist/college student, I have a budget of, oh, $2000. Yay. My previous car died at the very end of this last school year - it lasted me a total of like, 2.5 years, and I spent more than $2000 on it. So I'm pretty sure I'm screwed. Also, at home, I can't even borrow one of my parents' cars. The one I could actually drive just got totaled by being rear-ended and also slamming into the back of the car in front of it. The remaining car is a manual, and no one ever has the time to teach me how to drive the frakkin' thing.

If I had a few more thousand dollars, I would look into a Honda, a Toyota, or a Kia. I REALLY want a car that was made in the past 7 years. I'm tired of having an old car that I'm always afraid of it breaking (until it does).

Now, if I were rich, I'd get a fully restored '64 Mustang, or a '69 Camaro, or a '71 Dodge Charger. Something like that. While that sat in my garage looking pretty, I'd actually drive some kind of fancy new car, something environmentally friendly as well as known to be safe and reliable. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll ever have that kind of money. tongue.gif

I drive a slightly banged up 2002 gold Pontiac Grand Am. It has some umph, very responsive turning (rack and pinion (sP?)), and I can feel the road pretty well, which I definitely need to have when I drive so I know what I'm doing and can react fast enough and whatnot. My dream car would be a fully restored 70's Stingray, and it must be black. In brief research, it looks like it may be properly called a Corvette C3 coupe, but google images finds the proper model when I search for Chevy Stingray.
This space for rent. Inquire within.

60's Vettes are so much cooler. '66 is my favourite. Though I do love the '73 as well. tongue.gif And yeah, most people refer to it as a Corvette Stingray, but if you're looking for the 70's gen Stingrays, it's technically the C3 (60's ones would be C2)...

If I may so recommend, Fiestas are kind of outdated. You expressed interest in Minis as well, which sounds like you are fond of hatchbacks. You may want to consider getting a used Ford Focus ZX3,..its basically the Focus take of a hatchback. its sporty, stylish, and you should be able to find some used ones withing your price range.

it looks a lot better than the Fiestas, for sure.

Online, my friend. Search for your used car online! Once you have really found something that strikes your interest and your budget, just give that dealership a call, and they should send someone over to pick you up from your house and give you a ride to their dealership.

most dealerships will do this, the ones that wont are the dealerships that you shouldnt do business with in the first place.

as far as your budget, and your preference of having something good and dependable,.i would probably lean towards a used Hyundai/Kia as they were heavily promoted as cars that featured 10 yr/100,000 mile warranties. This is not to say that the used dealership you buy from may or may not still honor a warranty, but if Hyundai/Kia is touting that claim, its because its a well-made car.

Hmm..I havent even dabbled onto the subtopic of my dream car.

Well, lets see here,.if I had a lot of money,.like at least multi-millions of dollars, I would probably have a car customed designed for me by a well-respected Italian auto manufacturer. It would undoubtedly by a sports car probably made by Lambourghini or Ferrari,.but a special model custom made for me.

As far as Classic American cars go..I dream of a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS complete with all the necessary muscle for it to roar and kick ass on the road.

If I had lots of money, I would spend a lot of it into automotive research specifically regarding pick-up trucks. you see,.i have this really interesting ideal i have always wondered about...

..you know how pick-up trucks are so prone to slipping and sliding all over the road during winter when the roads ice up?..well, a lot of drivers put sand bags to weigh down the bed so that the rear tires can get more tire traction.

well, instead of doing that..i have thought about having a large hollow metal tubing..U-shaped or O-shaped (havent decided yet), that would be placed underneath the truck bed and centered between the rear tires of the truck. You would press on button located adjacent to your steering wheel, and it would compress the tube heavily with air (or maybe even a specific gas that when compressed into a hollow metal tank..causes it to become quite heavy).

..the tube would fill up rather quickly,.and viola!..you would have instant traction on the icy road due to the instant increase in weight. Now of course, you could depress another button that would release all of the air/gas from that tank...thus decreasing the additional weight from your truck.

it sounds weird..but i can envision this so much..it seems like its technologically possible and something that could very well work.

I am a very strange person. Technically, I've had a car of my very own since I was seventeen (two even), but I have no license. Although really, I should say two reserved cars, which my dad got...god knows how, and at very cheap prices from what I understand. He loves picking up old, second (or third, fourth, fifth...)-hand things to tinker with. The first one, a 1989 gold Volvo, ended up being used by my dad and brother, but is now a complete piece of junk because of various parts wearing out. And the one reserved now is...another old Volvo, only it's white with a blue interior.

(Not that I'm one to just pick out cars for pretty colors, but...I really like blue. And I like the blue-white combo. It reminds me of ice.)

I admit I don't know much about cars - they've never really been one of my things, but I like Volvos. Two main reasons for that, I think: one, my dad's always driven Volvos; my whole life, there's always been at least one in our driveway - they're familiar, one of the constants in my life. Two, those things are built like fucking TANKS (in the non-SUV sense - I HATE SUVs). It takes a massive collision to put one out of commission, and even if that happens...well, my brother totaled one years ago, and I believe the worst injuries he and his three friends got was whiplash. For someone entirely convinced that they're going to be killed by some irresponsible ass-hole, or lose control and kill themselves if they get behind the wheel...yeah, safety. I like my giant, speeding hunks of metal and glass nigh indestructible.

Screw sleek, I want to get in a car and not feel like I'm going to die.

...Although, in seventh grade I thought Jeep Wranglers were pretty cool for some reason I honestly can't and don't want to remember. And in high school I fell in love with the new Volkswagen Beatles for a couple years...they're small, I'm small (height-wise), and they seemed like nice, private cars (in the sense that there's no way in hell you could get more than a couple other people in it).
Check out my crappy drawings!

I bought a new car last year, and wanted the holy grail of assets. Good gas mileage, good storage room, lots of styling and handling. I drove a bunch of cars and had handy note cards on each model.

I bought (ordered) a MINI. I love this car. And last year it jumped from JD Power ratings #22 to #1! (Gosh, MINI panders to their customer base awfully well. And they win all kinds of advertising awards to prove it).

After the fact, I pulled out all my note cards. Comparing all of the above and some eight other virtues, the MINI came out on top, every category (but I was already won over by the cachet). Good news since I was driving one and motoring happily. But it was certainly affirmation.

I also drove an Acura Integra well past 200,000 miles. A fun ride and functional too. It just got tired. I would reccommend the honda product to anybody on a budget (my new ride was around 22K, with some nice features). Incidentally, I am selling my 65 Ford Fairlane 500 (2-door, V-8, 289 and garage kept for 35 years) if anybody's interested.

I like old Volvos, too, Janey. My family has had two, and my car that died recently was an '89. They really are tanks. We got rear-ended in our '85 when I was like ten, and the car that rear-ended us (some new Honda or something like that) was completely totaled - smashed all the way to the dashboard. Our car, well, the decorative trim fell off, that was all. tongue.gif

I have a '99 Chevy metro. It's pretty sleek and gets good gas mileage, but it was well-loved by the time I got it, so it's developing problems with the engine that are only getting worse, and it needs an expensive repair every year or so. I want to take it back to the mechanic who last had it and fuss at them, but somehow I feel it won't do any good.

For a while I wanted a T-bird, but they're kind of bulky and ugly, and they're just not the same as they were in the days of the Beach Boys.

I have a 1990 Toyota Camry. His name is Brak and I loves him.

I'm at a place where I could afford something newer, but I just really enjoy my car. It was a gift, and I had to pay about four years ago to put a new engine in, but other than that he hasn't cost me anything. Gets good gas mileage, too. wub.gif

I bought a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited last year. It had just hit dealerships the day before I checked it out, but I already knew what I wanted. I was a bit hesitant on the 4 door until I drove it (was looking at a 2 door), but I could barely tell the difference. The extra 20 inches just let me take corners faster. I know, I'm a city(ish) dweller now but I still do travel some gravel/dirt roads and whatnot. It's fun and has gotten me through some nasty stuff (like last year's snow storms). I've wanted a Wrangler for years and I finally was able to do what I wanted. Sure the mileage isn't that great, around 19-20 mpg on the highway, but It's a total blast to drive and it's comfortable. I'm hoping in a few years to pick up a tuner Jeep to tool around with. None of that 3 inch lift and 33 inch mud tire stuff, but more or less something I don't have to worry about wrecking.
