Do any other chefelfers keep fit in any way? Pop up a few details if you do. Myself - I workout (as my sig says) and also train as a pro wrestler.

What do you do?

Used to train in several martial arts. Knee injury + mega surgery kicked me out of it for a while, and then I finally got back into training and that's when the thyroid problem cropped up and I had to get surgery for that. I think I'm finally good to get back into it, but I don't know anything about the local dojos except for the Aikido one, and he's a douche who got angry and tried to break my wrist when one of the wrist-twisty things didn't work on me due to my being very flexible/"double-jointed" - so he proceeded to switch to a different technique, and kept twisting long after I had tapped out, smacked out, and finally yelled out, "I'M TAPPING OUT, THAT MEANS STOP!"... He also yelled at me because I threw his demonstration off by kicking him in the face when he was supposed to show how to block/counter/avoid a kick. So that shows he is not a good sensei who I will not be returning to. So I need to look into the other local martial arts places.

Aside from that, I walk all over campus (which is pretty big and very hilly), eat well, and I'm slowly working my way back into the routine I used to have before the two major surgeries, which was to do 100 pushups of various types, 100 sit-ups, 50 deep lunges, various flexibility exercises, etc. I feel very out of shape these days. sad.gif

Do you train for strength, or to look good?

Neither. I train because I love martial arts. It develops the mind, body, and spirit, and is a true art. It's a beautiful, deadly, spiritual discipline all at the same time, and keeps me attuned to myself as well as others.

Oh, and it's a hell of a lot of fun. wink.gif

I have a gym membership. I usually find myself preoccupied with work, my girl either demanding quality time from me,..or griping at me. I try to go about once a week. They have excellent machines, equipment there..but trying to find a parking spot anytime after 5pm on weekday nights is next to impossible.

Haha, that's rich. biggrin.gif

I'm a fencer. It's not a very good sport to train for strength because it's so asymmetrical (I have one thigh that's strong but I'm not sure about the other one) but girls love it and that's what's important.

Hehheh, that's very true.

I feel I get the opposite effect with my martial arts, though. Guys feel threatened by me, or at least act like it. They get all stupid, like, "Psh, well, it must not be REAL martial arts..." or "I could still take you in a fight, I swear! Um, if I hit girls that is - we'll never get a chance to find out who would win a fight because I NEVER hit a girl no matter what! But it would totally be me." Guys can be such dicks.

Unless they're a serious martial artist themselves - those generally respect me as any other martial artist, because they've been disciplined to do so. smile.gif

That'd be me, right in the middle. I don't usually hit girls. Or guys, for that matter. I don't like sparring as much as I used to, because I study martial arts from the perspective of a way to cause people serious pain. You can't really practice choking people the same as gently punching them in the chest. Bit of a story there, but anyway.

It hasn't done anything for my physique; I've got serious trouble maintaining my weight at a decent level, and I don't seem to get muscle in the usual sense. After years of practicing martial arts and months of trying to eat more, taking vitamins, and drinking those little nutrional milkshakes, I still struggle with keeping above 135 lbs. When you're 6'4", that's a bad thing.

I've just recently begun to fence. Of course, I have approximately no idea what I'm doing at the moment (I've only been doing it for about two months). Before that I basically spent about an hour a day trying to run as much as possible. I'm kind of a mess physically, and even though I've lost about thirty pounds in the past few months, I'm still significantly overweight. But I'm fencing on my school team, and I can keep up with the rest of the team, so I'm probably getting better. I fence (well, do conditioning/fence) a couple hours every day after school, and take some lessons in the evenings/weekends. I find the whacking people with bits of metal quite enjoyable.

Give me a PM if you want a few tips in putting on weight. Unless you genetics are truly, truly freakish, you'll be able to. I never thought I could, but after really looking into it and doing my research and work, I've gained around 24lb over the past six months. So it can be done, have hope!

I work out by coming home and sitting on my butt all night after walking around all day long until my crappy gimpy right foot is perpetually sore and stiff. Some day maybe I'll do some cardio and weights to work on getting into better shape so I'll be more healthy. I'd like to do fencing, except I don't think I'd like it because it would only be useful to spar with another fencer, what with no sideways movement involved and the rigid stance required, and the taking turns poking at one another and all. If only they offered medieval broadsword or something. tongue.gif I suppose a martial art could help, since I am both out of shape and completely unattuned to the entire world, my body, and everything, as long as I didn't have to do much that required me to balance on my right foot, since the very limited range of movement and constant pain it's in when in use causes me to fall right over if I don't stop myself somehow. I can't even dance due to incurable balance issues. The whole weight shifting thing just doesn't work due to said foot.

Anyway, good luck to all of you that are actually being active and taking care of your bodies. Spoon, you can get back in shape!

Civ, I don't believe you. Let's see one right now.

I was doing kung fu until I tore the ligament in my left ankle and I spent the last year with chronic fatigue from glandular feaver. Now I'm hitting the gym on sundays under the instructions of my physiotherapist father. but I don't have time to visit a gym anyother time during the week at the moment but I hope to rectify that in the new year. But at least My muscles are getting used to the idea of a regular work out again.

The idea here is to loose weight. Becuase accoridng to the BMI charts I'm the ideal weight for a 7' tall man. unfortunatley I"m 6'
