what is your favorite gaming mag? im not much into the pc gaming scene, mainly cause i lack the funds to always upgrade my pc for the necessary equipment for certain programs to run. but im not knocking it either, ive seen some pretty kick ass pc games in my time

so, im basically a console gamer, and with that being said..for years my mag of choice has been gamepro. but it seems to me that in recent years, gamepro magazine has been sucking ass.

for starters, the magazine has been shrinking in content considerably. i have a pretty healthy collection of gamepro magazines from the past, heck, i even have two issues that hail from around 1991 and 1992..but most of what i have is from the months prior to the ps2 release..from around 1999 up until around 2004.

i stopped my subscription when i began to notice more ads than content.

i like mags that present an overall unbiased review of key games. i realize that mags that are dedicated to a sole console (nintendo power, psm, and xbox) are usually some of the best sources for information about any given games for that system..but usually the reviews are tailored with added bias to promote sales.

i now find IMHO that one of the best mags out there for consoles tends to be electronic gaming monthly or game informer. i like thick chunky mags that are coffee table worthy,.especially when they run an extra thick issue for december, always great to read for hours on end while laying in bed sipping on egg nog while the snow falls outside.

i also choose mags that have easy to understand reviews, that arent laden with excessive artwork that detracts from the format of the review itself.

game informer does an excellent classic review of games. i dont know what it is, but there was a certain magic that was about in the super nintendo/sega genesis era. some of that magic was also prevalent in the n64/ps one era too.

Computer & Video Games circa 1998/1999... great mag. No real market any more, the net has all the news before the mags, and they're too expensive (maybe just in Ireland, because we import from the UK).

I used to read Hyper>>(the one Yahtzee writes a column for now) a few years back, being multi-platform it tended to be less biased then specialty mags. But I stopped reading awhile ago when I was finding it more of a chore.

I used to read Nintendo Power but now only read Game Informer, as far as mags go. As unreliable as it may be, my first stop for game info is the Wiki, then if I require futher info it's GI or to my local GameStop.

some of the guys that work at gamestop are flat out nerds that are in desperate need of a friday night date

you should hear the way they talk sometimes:...

"yeah, in that game, in order to advance to the next level you have to ensure your character has leveled up, because if you start taking damage at that point, you have to start that level all over. if you put this character and that character and grab the golden sword behind the castle steps,.it will render you invincible,.but only until all the wizards retreat,.then you have to wait until you advance to the next level, and from there you have to acquire 10 frog potions, and grab the shield and axe,.well,.you can still get thru with your golden sword,..but its tricky..and i wouldnt recommend it..cause if you did that,it would cause half the members of your party to die too soon..so the best thing to do is to lodge at the inn...sure it will cost you some money..but trust me,.ive played this game 100 times, before the sequel to it ever even was released..so i know what im talking about. but dont lodge at the first castle you see, cause that one has a trap door inside., it best to advance your party to the town directly north of the enchanted forest, thats castle is ok, and youll get twice as much mana there then if you stayed inside of the same village, plus it decreases your chances of dying..and did i mention that if you..."

SHHHEEEESSSHHH!!!!!! get a girl already!!
Peter Brady was by far the ugliest Brady kid on the "Brady Bunch". I mean, they were all pretty ugly, and the fact that the Brady dad wanted to always take the boys out on overnight camping trips just a tad bit too often, gave me the creeps.

Ugh. I hate going into Gamestop for exactly that reason. We have one video game shop that's cool, that also buys and sells older games and consoles (they take anything, compared to Gamestop's policy of only the newest gen stuff). The guy that runs that place is cool. Then we have 34652379402 Gamestops (they bought every other game shop we had) and they're full of stupid boys who hit on me too much, and grossly at that. One guy seriously asked if he could touch me. Either that or they treat me like I'm somehow mega inferior - because of course, girls can't be good at games. Sometimes I even get both. Bleh.

(Of course I also hate Gamestop because they do everything they can to rip the customer off...)

Back on topic...

I read Edge, and find them to be utterly fantastic. My only criticism is that they occasionally get a bit misty eyed about older games, and tend to see them through rose tinted glasses.

I used to read EGM, and only stopped because I never bothered to ship it to campus, and only read the magazines on the few times I went home, and I got pretty disgusted with their flagrantly biased reviews of the super-popular titles that they were happy to give out undeserving 10s to to boost hype: Halo series, any Bioware game, I'm looking at your reviews, at the very least.

GameStop is a terrible dick of a company that is doing its very best to control the entire video game sales industry and make sure it turns into the same shit that the movie and music industry have (mainly, anything worthwhile is unnecessarily expensive, and you're fucked if you're looking for anything older than about two years, and don't forget the perpetuation of the marketing hype on everything.) It doesn't help that they're an unchecked Monopoly in some areas due to buying out all of their competition.

Princess: I'm sure those guys would get girls if they were either willing to put up with all of the crap and/or lack of any shared interests besides breathing of a generic, "normal" girl, or if they could find a girl who didn't feel like she'd be putting up with gamerspeak. tongue.gif

Edit: Finding new hobbies and bathing/shaving more often certainly wouldn't hurt, though.

I used to read PSM religiously. The last issue I picked up was garbage though. I think Chris Slate pretty much made that magazine. They were just a generally great source for any and all things PlayStation-related. I also read a few issues of the Official US Playstation Magazine, but hated it. The only plus was the Penny Arcade comics, but they were so edited for content that much of the humour was lost.
EGM was my standby, but I mostly just liked it for Seanbaby's column at the end of each issue.

I've been sticking with EGM for a while now. I used to subscribe to PCGamer (I have the first issue!), but not anymore. My PC is not up to date at all -- at least in a gaming sense, haha.

I always feel weird about bashing life-lacking nerds on a site that contains the Star Wars Convention online. ... Maybe it's just me. happy.gif

Out here Game Stop is the reasonable alternative. We have some "speciality" shops that carry more older games, but when you get done paying, you don't know whether to insure the game or have it bronzed. I was quite pleased with GS the other day when I found a copy of Escape from Monkey Island, which I had never seen at the other shops. But I was also pleased to discover that even though the selection sucks, you can pick up some games at a better price at Costco.

ever walk into gamestop and see two copies of the exact same used title,.at different prices? trust me, if you look hard enough its bound to be there.

i also utterly refuse to buy any game from gamestop that has a generic jacket cover on it. if it doesnt have the manfacturers artwork on the jacket,.or the instruction manual..they might as well chuck that game into the dumpster

My feelings exactly on the packaging and the pricing. I'm not sure if they're outdated tags or if it's the condition of the game that causes pricing discrepencies, but no generic sleeve. If the game wasn't in a case for teh previous owner, or was too beat up, I sure as hell don't want it.

Until recently my ex-EB outlet was awesome. They knew me by name and gave me all sorts of free crap. My roommate and I hit it up constantly. They expected my rommate to be there almost weekly for preorders heh.

The people at the EB near my place are getting familiar with me. Mostly because I usually ask questions that any game geek loves to hear. Stuff about technical specs, or what titles they would recommend. Game geeks love to recommend shit.
I don't know, I still have a fondness for EB. Mostly because there are no less than five within close distance to my house, which means I can almost always find what I'm looking for in one day of shopping.

Gamestop bought all of our EBs that I know of. And they bought Rhino, too. Gamestop is all we have left except for one little shop. I miss EB.
