Ill. student gets detention for hugging
Tue Nov 6, 5:56 PM ET

MASCOUTAH, Ill. - Two hugs equals two days of detention for 13-year-old Megan Coulter. The eighth-grader was punished for violating a school policy banning public displays of affection when she hugged two friends Friday.

"I feel it is crazy," said Megan, who was to serve her second detention Tuesday after classes at Mascoutah Middle School.

"I was just giving them a hug goodbye for the weekend," she said.

Megan's mother, Melissa Coulter, said the embraces weren't even real hugs — just an arm around the shoulder and slight squeeze.

"It's hilarious to the point of ridicule," Coulter said. "I'm still dumbfounded that she's having to do this."

District Superintendent Sam McGowen said that he thinks the penalty is fair and that administrators in the school east of St. Louis were following policy in the student handbook.

It states: "Displays of affection should not occur on the school campus at any time. It is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved."

Coulter said she and her husband told their daughter to go ahead and serve her detentions because the only other option was a day of suspension for each skipped detention.

"We don't agree with it, but I certainly don't want her to get in more trouble," Coulter said.

The couple plan to attend the next school board meeting to ask board members to consider rewording the policy or be more specific in what is considered a display of affection.

"I'm just hoping the school board will open their eyes and just realize that maybe they shouldn't be punishing us for hugs," Megan said.

Shouldn't they be worrying about paying more attention to the quality of their teaching and to catch the real criminals than petty things like this? (Maybe that is the quality of their teaching, making scapegoats out innocent people to show that they are doing something about crime.)

What good is a detention going to do?

For people who touch:

"The penalty is fair because Simon says so."

Joke: "It sounds like the administrators are robots!"

But its alright when "we didn't do much on this subject because we only touched it."

I think they have to ban heterosexual contact so that they don't have to make a special policy for the one-in-a-million open and adjusted high-school age homosexual couples. Lest they appear discriminatory in those laughably rare cases, they need to shut the whole thing down.

Or something.

Why would someone hug Hershey bars?

I support the school's decision and their efforts to create a safe place to learn. Touching is the most common way of causing bloodshed, and hugging is just a beguiling form of touching. And you know what comes after beguile.

I see now. I know it use to go on a lot in my area but it never led to bloodshed.
But there always seems to be jealous people who have to shed guns as well as blood.
If it is the same gender it might not matter. Unless they break up and get jealous too.

Joke: I think I will put on a space suit so no one catch affectionately touch me.

Joke: Go hug a Hersheys. The taste is the pleasure and getting high is the pain!
If they had that at every school then people won't have need to hug each other but they might end up delusional over being the nuts of chocolates.

I feel ashamed of myself! I wrote catch instead of can in my last post.

This whole thing is dumb, dumb, dumb and you all know it.
Even jokingly does the "crime" fit the punishment?

NO, why on earth wound it be detention worthy
to hug a classmate/friend regardless of gender?

Kissing is pushing it. Maybe a few stirict warnings and then time served
but a hug that wasn't even really a hug just a glorified tap on the shoulder.

There are more improtant matters at hand
like how so many teachers are sleeping with their students

why can't Johnny read in when he's in high school
and why so many schools get shot up by students

that clearly had issues that were conveniently ignored.
Perhaps we should be looking into that besides all this tomfoolery

I did say non-jokingly that they should be more worried about the quality of their teaching. In my place the cheap chocolates they only use to sell from vending machines use to put people in delusional states when they went high on it.

Sorry about my sensitivity. A problem that frequently gets me over reacting.
But at the same time I think that detentions over hugging appears to be over reacting too.

Well, I'm sure with hugging out of the way that '20% of Americans can't find the US on a world map' statistic is destined to come down to at least 18.7%.

How much detention do you get for punching someone, or destroying someone's self-esteem though constant ridicule?

If I ever have kids, I will personally beat the ever-living shit out of the parents of any bully my child has. And I will sacrifice to Satan on the Eternal Alter of Damnation and very sharp spikes any teacher that disciplines my child for being affectionate.

Yeah, you can beat up the parents, but trust me, that doesn't always stop the bullying. It's bets just to disappear the kids. Noone will look into it; kids go missing all the time. If it comes up, you can say you saw some dingoes in the area.
