Anyone ever try FPS Creator? It's like AGS; it lets people who don't know a lot about programming to create games, only rather than creating old-school adventure games, you can create modern first person shooters. The software and the addon model packs cost money, although you could probably find a them on any major torrent site. It looks like one could create some very nice amateur games with it. My only concerns are whether or not you can change the incredibly annoying default footsteps sound effects, whether or not you can make it little more open-ended than the linear level-by-level system, and if you can add more story elements other than making sound/video triggers.

They are working on a new version that runs on Vista and uses DirectX10, which has stuff like ragdoll and water effects, but I'm not interested in it as my computer is old and slow and I hate Windows Vista's guts.

I looked at some videos for it, and I might give the demo a try once I get Windows installed on my computer. Who knows, maybe I'll make a game with it. And maybe it will even be good. I'm thinking something along the lines of a comedy-horror with nice, atmospheric environments, like Blood.

I'm calling a mod, take this to the games forum.

Edit: I'm not ACTUALLY calling a mod. I'm actually just sorta sitting here listening to swing music. But I'm thinking very hard about possibly considering doing something to get this in the right forum.

I've used it too, but it is too much like making a mod or a map for some game. It is too strict for a bigger project, but for some small shooters it works. It also lacks support for pretty many other model formats than autodesk programs...

There are a lot of game engines, many are free, that would allow you to make your own FPS with a lot of work already done (Full list of engine here: http://www.devmaster.net/engines/ ). But yes, it probably would require programming knowledge.

Come to think of it, this is pretty related. He did say it was like AGS, which is very Yahtzee related.

That Irrlicht engine looks pretty cool. I'd like to design a game that focuses on gameplay and compatibility with older hardware, rather than good graphics, mainly because I have a very slow, old computer, and I can sympathize with those who share my plight.

zweb: Brilliant, I've always felt gameplay was the core of any good game, something I felt has been shafted in favour of "interactive experiences". Also great to see focus on older hardware, there's a huge amount of people out there with PCs that aren't top of the range and it's great to see games targeted towards them. One of the reasons the original Half-Life sold so much was because it could run on older (at the time) hardware.

Engine hunting is quite a skill. You've got to ensure it has all the features you need, is modifiable enough, and has a license you can work with (free games, fee for commercial, open source etc.). My advice is to work out exactly what sort of game you want to make so you know what to look for in an engine. Alternatively, get one you think is okay, then mess around with it for a while until you come up with a game you think you could work well with it.

perhaps he's hinting to yahtzee that he could make his FPS script into a game with such an engine, and that he desperately wants this to happen?

Uh, yeah, pretty much.

I'm actually more an "At-home, but with a cell-phone to call the car, but too lazy to do so" moderator.
