JRPGs have been around since the NES and Master System. Kingdom Hearts is a PS2 game that came out in 2002. What, did they beam the commercial backwards through time? I can't think of which is more ridiculous, that or the fact that Kingdom Hearts isn't even a JRPG.

Kingdom Hearts is still shitty, though.

Only J-RPG I can think of that I actually enjoyed playing (when I was like 14-15) was FF6 (and perhaps 8, because of its passion and the incredible visual experience which was great for its time, though I couldn't bear with that emo fucktard Squall anymore).

Hell yeah... not too mention that superfluous Quistis. And that annyoing Selphie. And that idiot Irvine. Xell at least had some punch. The whole game could have been much more enjoyable if they had just left those guys out and focused even more on a non-emo Squall, Rinoa, Edea, Laguna and his gang.

Ah well, but it definitely had the longest and best ending sequence if seen, so it at least makes up for its other shortcomings.

Personally I think JRPGs put too much emphasis on story telling and not enough on gameplay. It's generally the same old Fight/Magic/Item/Run turn based battle system that minorly change at best, mixed with dead linear epic story or teen soap opera. Worst, I've seen games where I was force fed between 45 minutes to 1 hour of dialogue, actionless fetch quests and "Go talk to this character" before I could even experience the game to know if it was any good.

JRPG are certainly better than bad RPG with "Go kill 10 rats in my basement" kind of quests, hours of EXP, gold or item grinding and inexistant/boring story like Diablo 2 and Dragon Fable, but it doesn't score much higher. It doesn't beat computer RPGs where you can make moral choices, explore freely, decide which and how you want to complete your objectives, have discussions with NPC and learn spells and skills that have an use outside the battlefield, and none of them get any close to a good old pen and paper RPG played with friends.

But I had a lot of fun with Super Mario RPG, so I will probably give the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series a try.

Uh, except that jRPGs are just a bad anime show with equally bad gameplay added, and you have to grind just as much as in a wRPG.

Again, see Tales of Symphonia for an example of this. That game managed to be even more frigging tedious than the usual jRPG turn based copypaste bullcrap, and it had a REAL TIME ACTION BATTLE SYSTEM. If that's not a gigantic failure, I don't know what is.

If ripping off AD&D's battle system for all of your games because you can't come up with one of your own isn't failure, I don't know what is. (I'm looking in your direction bioware.)

You know what's a good RPG? The Elder Scrolls Three: Morrowind. It's HUGE. There is so much choice. The main storyline probably consists of 0.1% of the game.

I hate Morrowind :<

My only good memory of that game was uninstalling it to make room for Psychonauts, which didn't run anyway. But I did get rid of Morrowind, and that counts as a triumph in my book!

Right on. cool.gif The most detailed world, intriguing story and fun gameplay I've ever seen in an RPG.
